In Ace Attorney, the most powerful moments are when the tables turn on the case. You're no longer on the defensive; your opponent let slip something important and you're on the cusp of turning the case around in your favor. You're about to unravel the web of lies your opponent has weaved, and you're suddenly in *pursuit* of the truth. IMO, that's why the track where you're getting closer to the truth is always named 'pursuit' 😹

Unlike the regular Ace Attorney series, Investigations actually centers around crime scenes, not courtrooms and you play as a prosecutor, not a lawyer. The Pursuit musics play when you're approaching the truth of the crime and the true culprit, almost like a chase of logic and contradictions through the web of lies and deceptions. That's pretty much what made this game series so popular. There weren't any games that actually centered around courtrooms, lawyers and prosecutors when Ace Attorney first came out in... 2002, I think. Also this particular game never officially came out in the west. Only in Japan. Hence the game title. "Kenji" the word for prosecutor, while "saiban" is the word for lawyer.

Saiban is trial. The word for lawyer is "bengoshi"

Shu Takumi, creator of Ace Attorney, wanted to make a mistery game about "the thrill about catching a criminal with evidence" and ended up creating Ace Attorney. The structure usually works like this: You go around investigating a case, essentially examining crime scenes and talking to witnesses and stuff, point and click style. The courtroom segments that follow are more visual novel style, playing out the trial with minimal player interaction, where you are occasionally asked to answer questions or present evidence to prove a point, explain a contradiciton and so on. Now the two Investiagtion Spin off games don't technically take place in the courtroom, but still function similarly. Investiagting is more in depth, and you still end up debating who the criminal is. Usually, the animations and music are over the top, especially the pursuit themes, which play at a huge breakthrough in the case. These are always a highlight, with my personal recommendation being "Pursuit ~ The Great Turnabout" from the recently localized "The Great Ace Attorney Adventures". Speaking of localization, at this point in time, Gyakuten Kenji 2 is the only game to not have officially been localized at all, but there is a solid fan translation. It's funny you should mention that Ace Attorney is both popular and not popular at the same time. Ace Attorney suffers a bit from a little something I like to call Donkey Kong syndrome, where a lot of people are generally aware of the series, but not many are active fans. Ace Attorney has been struggling with sales for years now.

When it comes to pursuit themes I would personally recommend The Great Turnabout from The Great Ace Attorney because it's really good.

Gyakuten Kenji 2, AKA Ace Attorney Investigations 2. Up until recently, with The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles/Adventures being released/localized in English, this game was at or near the top of most Ace Attorney players all time favourites. It likely still is, but it now frequently competes with GAA for top spot (as both games are phenomenal, and likewise have some absolutely incredible soundtracks). In spite of being hampered by the DS Soundchip (like many excellent titles from this games era sadly) it managed to deliver some fantastic music while also having one of the strongest, most cohesive, overarching plots in the entire Ace Attorney Franchise. It did everything a good spinoff + sequel should do. It improved the gameplay, expanded on character backstories, had interesting new characters, brought back unexpected characters to give them more backstory, all while having some truly incredible twists. It truly is one of the greatest AA games in the series’ history, and this Pursuit theme is one of the many things people love and remember about the game. Which makes it a shame that this is basically the only Ace Attorney game not to be localized in English (however a team of fans did put together an absolutely fantastic English translation patch, complete with custom English voice work for certain bits of dialogue, allowing English-speaking/non-Japanese fluent fans to play through the title and get the full experience). Playing this game in this day and age is difficult, (needing emulation with all the difficulties that come with it) but it’s one of the most rewarding, enjoyable, and memorable games one can play from the Ace Attorney Series, with some of the best music (from its era) in the series.

Pursuit themes are used during arguments (Cross-examinations, rebutals) when you're really close to uncovering major case-related stuff such as twists, motives, or incriminating evidence. It's essentially a moment that is supposed to make you feel very powerful, as you amsterfully corner someone, using arguments and evidence, of course.

I really should continue playing Ace Attorney ... I really like your approach of getting to know the games through these little songs :D It's really fun to see you try to figure stuff out and at the same time that you see some little things just through the music (and maybe the picture/footage of the game)! But as for someone in the gaming community or also VN community, Ace Attorney is something you have at least heard about. I also only played the first but always hear so much about it that I want to play the later ones, too!

Reminds me a lot of the Lufia 2 battle theme. A modern composition of course, but the soundfont sounds very similar.

More banger FFXIV music dropped: In The Balance. It's an hymn for the FFXIV twin gods Nald'Thal, and has a strong drum beat and a catchy melody!
