I am so glad that I stumbled upon your video. I've been watching these types of videos for some time now and you my friend are BY FAR the best at teaching the viewer the most important elements needed to create a fully functional ecosystem for fish. I have a 700-gallon Koi pond in my backyard and recently added 3 bowls just like the one you did in this video....the fish are doing well but will soon be doing much better thanks to you!

It makes a lot of sense to use potting soil. For my 7 gallon betta Cube I used a bunch of rotting material mixed with a bit of sand and then capped it off with some more sand and then a crushed Coral Fluval stratum to cap it all. And I actually let that sit for a long time and I purposely planted plants that would fail so I can bury them when they died and that's how I actually set up my ecosystem

Shout Out Phillips Fish World❤ they got everything you need to get started I like having every level of life in my fish tanks I've got stuff to look at under my microscope I've got stuff to look at in the substrate at the top of the water in the water column everywhere there is something living and doing its thing❤

You have a right idea about the eco system yes, the betta would be happy in it, but that bowl is way too small, they do not live in puddles and ditches, the naturally live in huge rice paddies, while yes shallow is vast and open, and stagnant ponds and slow running streams. The minimum space for a betta is 5 gallons no less

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This is a 3.5 gallon bowl.

This makes me want to get a brackish tank setup again. I’m interested to see if you get plants to grow in brackish water.
@uncommonaquatics6 ай бұрын
I love the variety of the brackish fish, but my method of fish keeping is letting the plants do a lot of the maintenance and keep the water clean. I’ve had those plants in there about a month and they haven’t grown, but they also haven’t melted. I’ll have updates obviously in the future

I've had a betta like that & it's called a "mustard gas" betta. IDK why, I assumed it was the purple & yellow colors. Cool video, I subscribed for more like this. Good job....

Thanks. Definitely a nice looking fish.

The plant you didn't know the species is probably Hornwort. Scuds eat a lot of that plant, and Tony addes it to every order.

Where did you get biochar with microrizal microbes?
@lewisnelken19666 ай бұрын
you forgot sand to cap the soil! Turned out amazing anyways though. Never seen a soil clear up that quickly

Where did you order the microbes? What species?
@uncommonaquatics5 ай бұрын
I got them from Phillips Fish Works. I think I put a link in the description, but you can also just Google it. The substrate I used came from a local fish store. Walmart had the biochar for four dollars or so.

Enormous amount of nutrients, imho... I hope it will run well and this mega plant will thrive. Beta will eat all bugs :)

It is so much easier just using some organic potting soil that's what I did for my guppy Pond outside and they are thriving they love it there's an ecosystem in there too I don't have to feed them

Please read up on Betta fish before providing information on them. In the wild, they live in marshes, floodplains, and paddy fields. They can 'survive' for a short time in small puddles, the same way you could 'survive' living in a room the size of a toilet. In the wild they have a territory of around 1.5 square feet.

This is a misinformation commonly found in facebook groups or other fora where people try to humanize this creature. Normally they start their statement by "In the wild...". But actually they just googled it and havent been even to places where betta is native at. The 5-gallon rule is a just a suggestion written by some folks as a mere recommendation. Yes Bettas can do well in sub 5-gal. Welcome to the new science! And avoid saying "in the wild" because we know all of these, weve been there done that.
