Quick overview of setup for external touchscreen/panels for MSFS, X-Plane. This setup is useful for those who use Air Manager particularly the G-1000 panel.
The 15.6 inch monitor shown is a Wimaxit that I purchased from Amazon.
The two smaller 13.3 inch monitors are Uperfect monitors I purchased from eBay.
The monitors are connected to the computer with two cables:
1) An HDMI (or DP) cable that goes from an output on the graphics card to the HDMI input on the monitor. Note that you may need an HDMI to Display Port cable/adapter.
2) A USB cable to connect the monitor to the computer. In my case it's a USB "A" to "C" cable. I recommend a powered USB hub. This cable both powers the monitor and sends the touchscreen information back to the computer. Note that all monitors may not work this way.
From there the computer needs to be setup to recognize the monitors as touchscreens. This is done using "Tablet PC Settings" located within the control panel. Open that up and press the "Setup" button. I have not ever needed to use the calibrate function, but your gear may require that.

Great explanation. In case it helps others, I also have a couple of Wimaxit 15.6 inch touch screen monitors from Amazon that I use with Air Manager. To get the touchscreens to work however, I need 3 cables (not just 2) for each monitor - the USB C on mine is the one that gives the touchscreen capability. So if anyone else tries with just 2 cables (Power and HDMI) , and cannot get the touchscreen element working, I would suggest they try adding a 3rd (USB C) cable also to see if this fixes things. Regards, Alasdair

That's good to know. Thanks for the reply! Bottom line the monitor needs to receive video from the graphics card with some type of HDMI to HDMI or HDMI to DP cable, power to one of the USB ports, and USB touchscreen data back to the computer. It seems for some screens this will require a total of two cables and for some three cables. Again, thanks!

Not all usb ports on your PC are the same, most don’t provide enough power output to power the panel, make sure your usb port on your pc is usb 3.1 or purchase a quality usb hub that can power all your devices, like the one made by Sabrent 8 or 16 ports. They are not cheap but top quality.

It’s a touch screen for sure. I had watched one of Les Oreilly’s KZbin’s about improving FPS. I had reconnected my monitors to match his recommendation, that’s when I lost touch. Great. Thanks. The system we are slowly building for my two grandsons (ages13 & 14) when we first starting assembling it last Dec has the same two 15.6" touchscreens and two 7" touchscreens in the instrument panel never got even to the 'set up' stages, but due to having problems of not being able to get the three 'out the cockpit' views screens (a 65" LG OLED and two 27" LG 27 Inch Ultragear Gaming Monitors to be recognized and running by any of the necessary external hubs, two 15.6" touchscreens and two 7" touchscreens, none of which I was savvy enough back them to get the two m1 mac minis, even with external hubs that allow the m1 minis to drive up to six displays each. I won't be back to my two grandsons house until late Nov but it appears that the present two m1 macs will be going to the boys and being replaced by a Mac Studio Ultra (that is claimed can drive 5 monitors (and with hubs) the other two small ones. We plan to run the Studio Ultra with Parallels and Windows 11 on one drive and on the other, Mac OS running XPlane 12 (hopefully out by then_. Air Manager I just found out is available for both Windows and Mac OS so will try your great ideas on both 'sides' then. Thanks.

If the Tablet PC setting is not showing up then Windows is not detecting a touch capable screen. This is mostly due to one of two reasons: There is no usb connection to the computer (bad cable, wrong output, not hooked up at all) or the screen is not touch capable. The very first "touch" screen I ordered didn't work and after much troubleshooting it turned out it was not actually a touch unit. If you attach a touch screen to the PC correctly but don't set it up it will function as a mouse pad. This is demonstrated at around 3:30 in the video. How is your screen currently connected?

Hello Ivan - thanks for the great video. I am all up and running. I don't suppose there is an auto-magic way to have the displays in the cockpit pop-out automatically on launch? and on a side note, do you use your StreamDeck just for KZbin or do you use for FlightSim as well. And - what camera do you use, the video quality is excellent. Thad

Apparently there is an app that can be found that will remember window positions. It's called "MSFS Pop Out Manager". I have never used it, and I can't vouch for it. I think there is also a clunky Windows method? Having said that, there is no built in function like X-Plane where your pop outs go to defined position, shape, and size. I use my Streamdeck primarily for OBS, but on occasion I have used it for MSFS in the past to get to functions that are difficult/impossible to assign in the options/controls section. What I have never tried is to do both at the same time. My camera is a Sony A5100 and Sigma 16 mm, f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary. It's a great combination and one of the most popular with streamers.

I have one question: Do you have to install Air manager?
@IvanSkyFlight
@IvanSkyFlight 2 ай бұрын
You don't have to. For example, there are several aircraft where their main displays don't have buttons or controls on a bezel. You see this in some of the airliners or even the Cirrus Vision Jet. In this case you can pop out the screens and move them to a different monitor. I also do this a lot with helicopters. Some displays (from within the sim) can even be popped and have touch capability, but other third party apps are needed. Air Manager as of now does not add touch capability to the displays that are popped out. Air Manager only adds touch capability to the bezels or other gauges being emulated.

I am assuming you are positive that both monitors are touch capable. There are screens that look identical but are not touch capable. How do you compare air manager / touch screen additional displays against something like an iPad and the Remote Flight apps (cockpit HD, radio HD, etc)? I'm just getting a box set up and it seems like they have similar capabilities. The thing I'm looking at with Remote Flight is that it doesn't use any of your GPU to draw additional screens.

I really like the Remote Flight stuff. The renders are gorgeous. Having said that, I have not found the AM stuff too taxing on my gear, and I love the flexibility for different planes. If you do like the iPad stuff also take a look at Simionics. They have a great G1000 emulation.

Hi once again Ivan. I returned the failed pair of generic touchscreens and purchased instead some 13.3" branded as UPerfect touchscreens (not quite like yours, but with a small box mounted on the back where the cables connect to the ports). Hallelujah, I can confirm they work right out of the box! I only wasted two weeks on the faulty pair! Dang! My next observation: when using Air Manager on X-Plane with a Knobster, I notice that after using a touchscreen to control something, if I want to then use a keyboard keystroke to invoke something, say the parking brake 'B', or a different cockpit view assigned to the numeric keys 1 - 9, I have to physically move the mouse off the touchscreens and click on the main monitor before X-Plane will recognise any keyboard input. Do you have this problem too?

There is a "focus" issue on MSFS for sure, but I have not tried this on XP. I did a reset of my computer about two months ago and have not reloaded XP yet. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised.
@youngfella3054
@youngfella3054 Жыл бұрын
@@IvanSkyFlight Further internet research revealed several simmers have observed and solved the 'focus' issue (a.k.a. the dreaded 'Black Flash' in X-Plane when moving from the simulator screen to a second or third screen in extended desktop), by setting screen resolution to one pixel less, vertically. That is, 1920 x 1079. This can be achieved by creating that custom resolution in the Nvidia control panel (or similar), and then selecting it in Windows' Display Settings. As for keeping focus on the main screen after any interaction with the second or third touchscreen, I found an ingenious little tool called Touch Mouse Tools. This separates your mouse from your touchscreens. Now I can interact with the X-Plane cockpit via Air Manager on either touchscreen, and then immediately press a keyboard command, such as Brakes (B), or look around the cockpit with my numerical keypad.... all without having to physically move and click the mouse pointer back to the main monitor.

Let's see if we can figure this out. First, what are the connections you are using? Does your monitor require two or three cables? Which is the first screen that has text/instructions on it, and what exactly does it say?

@@traveltheworld1870 Sometimes Windows confuses these generic touchscreen monitors for a mouse or a keyboard device. It is worth checking Control Panel -> Device Manager to verify: look in the list of devices for three things: Human Interface Devices, Keyboards, and Mice and other pointing devices. In my case, I found two items under Mice. I only have one mouse, so the other was the erroneously identified touchscreen. Check the Properties -> Events for each "mouse" to find the one most recently plugged in (the events have date/time stamps). The most recent one is probably the touch screen monitor. Properties -> Driver -> Uninstall Device to remove it from the list. Unplug the touchscreen from power and USB and then reconnect power and USB. Check Device Manager again. Ideally, you want each external touchscreen monitor to appear under Human Interface Devices as 'HID-compliant touch screen'. Hope this helps.

Which G1000 bezel are you using? As of now, there are two G1000 bezels you can select in Air Manager 4. It seems that the bezel that says X-Plane on it works well (for MSFS and X-Plane). The other one is labeled "Garmin G1000 NXi Overlay" and has some really cool extra features, but it doesn't have functionality for moving the pop out once you've initially placed it. I have actually discussed this with the developer so he is aware. The other issues maybe the iPads. I assume you are using software such as Duet which turns the iPad into additional monitors. Try switching bezels first. I bet that's it.

Running it on two machines, I don't think you will be able to drag the pop out to the laptop. Even if you use software to extend the PCs desktop to the laptop, your Air Manager program will still be in a different environment, or at least I think it will. The easiest fix would be to run Air Manager from your desktop PC. You can have Air Manager on more than one machine, but that may take an additional license. Another option would be to use Air Player along with Air Manager. I think that is cheaper and can run on two or more computers, but please do fact check me on that.

Sorry to hear that. I just did some experimenting. I am currently running three Windows 11 machines. All are updated to 23H2. One runs Windows 11 Pro and the other two run Windows Home. If Windows does not detect a touch screen it will not show the "Tablet PC Settings" option. I went through several variations of plugging in and unplugging the USB cables that, at least in my case, add touch capability. In every scenario, the "Tablet PC Settings" would be there if the touch monitor was hooked up appropriately. I noticed this: If I plugged a monitor in, I had to restart for the "Tablet PC Settings" to show up. My guess is that for some reason your PC is not recognizing the tablet(s) as having touch capability. Do you have access to other computers to try your tablets on?

Thanks for the concise tutorial on setting up a touch screen monitor. My touch screen monitor is an Aekekgrep 15.6 1080. I followed the directions as presented but am still not fully functional. Using the Air Manager 172 panel for example, gauges are active, and knobs visibly turn however they don't function. Switches do not move nor function. I've tried other panels and planes but get the same results. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

First thought is does your touch panel work in the normal Windows environment? Does it work outside of Air Manager and your flight sim?
@mekkentucky
@mekkentucky Жыл бұрын
No. It still acts as a "partial" touch pad for my main screens (running 3 monitors). I follow your instructions and identify it (monitor 4) as a touch screen (aftering hitting enter on the white screens as instructed). For example, it will open Air Manager from the touch screen monitor task bar onto a main monitor but attempts to use finger do not work. Thanks!
@IvanSkyFlight

@@mekkentucky When hitting "enter" that should be only the non-touch screens so it will go to the next monitor. On the touch screen monitor you would actually touch the display. Is that what you are doing?

Yes, that's correct. "Enter" on each of the three main monitors until I get to the 4th (touch screen). I easily track your instructions on the video, just don't end up with it working even with instructions so I must be missing something...

Hi. Great video again. I've just configured my MSFS 2020 with N.3 LG monitor-34 inches and N. 1 TouchScreen 1080P HDR UPPERFECT 15.6" (I'm shure, it is a touch screen monitor). All the monitros are connected via DP and HDMI to the RTX 3080 Ti graphic card. In the display settings of my Windows 11 PC I've selected "extend desktop to this screen" option for all the four monitors and I've selected one of th LG 34 inches monitors as primary display. Than I've installed Air manager on the PC and followed your suggestions. Anyway I've a issue: touch screen don't works on the uPerfect touch screen monitor. I can intereact with Demo Panel, i.e., by means the mouse but if I touch the screen nothing happen. Where Im wrong? Thanks in advance.

Other than the HDMI/DP connections to the graphics card, do you have any connections that are USB to the computer? That is how the "touch" signal is sent.

So yes, your cable must accommodate both the external screen and you available USB inputs on your PC. If there are no USB C inputs on your PC, then most likely, the cable would be a USB C to A. As far as manipulating buttons and knobs on the touch screen, using Air Manager, that can be done with by touch and/or mouse, depending on the function. As far as I know, MSFS 2020 doesn't "pop out" the bezels on devices like the G1000 only the display screen.

how to configure overhead panel on touchscreen monitor with Air Manager?
@IvanSkyFlight
@IvanSkyFlight Жыл бұрын
The first thing would be to find out if there are developers who have put together the components of the overhead panel, and of course, that would depend on the particular aircraft. Then you would open a blank or preconfigured panel and you should be good to go.
