Yesss!!! Less manipulation grew my hair. My hair grew extensively during the pandemic because of protective styling and very few products used. I just blew it out a couple days ago and it's down my back for the first time in over a decade.

I big chopped my 4c waist length hair in March. Keys to growing your natural hair fast: 1. Use Ayurvedic ALL NATURAL NO OVER THE COUNTER PRODUCTS 2. Low/to no manipulation of the hair 3. Hair vitamins 4. Hair growth oils 5. Keep your scalp CLEAN 6. Look up Indigenous Strandz channel. She has thigh length natural hair and uses Ayurvedic methods 7. Patience, Patience, Patience 8. “You don’t have to be in pain for your style to last” YES. A thousand times yes. It’s so normalized for black women to suffer through headaches and pain a couple days after getting our hair done, and that does nothing but damage our hair and scalp. I remember the time I decided I had enough with painful styling was the third time I got a weave. I was in so much pain from the tightness and I kept telling myself, “well, at least I know the braids will last” and suffered for about a week. My scalp starting scabbing up and I realized I never wanted to experience pain from a hair style again. Now, whenever I do braids or crochet, if it hurts, I take it out and do it again. If someone else is braiding my hair, if it hurts, I speak up.

I was able to grow my hair by doing it myself. The famous blow out salons like to put high heat on hair, because it's thick. When I get it braided or taken down they rip and snatch at my hair. I'm very conscious of people that don't care about healthy hair and look down upon coarser textures of hair.

I think that's a good point...the things that are easy aren't as "fun". We take for granted what we have or what we can do, while glamorizing, idolizing, idealizing the things that we don't have or can't seem to achieve. It's not always about having the thing, but about having the option or potential to have the thing. Like, I'm a very introverted homebody sort of person. I like to stay home, I don't often go out. But 2020 made me a bit stir-crazy, not because I couldn't go anywhere (because I might not have anyway), but because the option to go anywhere if I had actually wanted to was taken away.

Thank you so much for the information! When you mentioned styles are not suppose to hurt (which I whole-heartedly agree and it has changed my perspective) this rose a question for me. Is being “tender-headed” a myth used to endure the pain of tight styles? Or is it a real thing? Over time, my pain tolerance grew higher because of the tight braiding, but I’m starting to think the tightness is what caused my hair to grow fine over the years :(

Twists and braids aren't necessarily protective hairstyles though right? they're "low-manipulation", but the ends are still kinda exposed to the elements to some degree, so they're not at least completely protective as far as protecting the ends goes (which is what a protective style means).

Can you do a video on trimming type 4 hair, does trimming really help grow our hair?
@KehindeOdeyemi
@KehindeOdeyemi 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I'm not Seun by I've been on a hair growth journey for a year and a half, and my experience with trimming is that you should only do it when your hair really needs it. If you are trimming your hair just for the sake of trimming, you will not see growth because you are trimming off length, instead of trimming off bad ends. I trim my hair about twice a year because I always keep my hair in protective styles so I find my ends do not usually get to the point where they need a trim until during the 4-6 month mark. I still retain length and I don't cut inches of my hair off, only the bad ends. But other then that, you shouldn't be trimming your hair constantly unless your ends are bad to the point where you need to trim. You might want to do dusting, but in my opinion dusting is just unnecessary for me. Good luck on your journey and I hope this helps!

i will say as a stylist, i would recommend to just prioritizing finding a stylist who is knowledgable about hair health as well as styling. i think its unnecessary for people with tighter textures and coarser hair to have to do excess work before the install, specifically adding heat. the stylist, if they cannot carefully braid over textured hair, should include that blowout in the styling process - and they should be trained in how to apply heat safely. diy heat can also cause lots of breakage right before a protective style :) thats just my opinion however!

You say you leave your braids in for 2-3 months, so I guess you wash your hair with the braids in. That personally doesn’t work for me because I find it hard to wash my hair as well as I’d like to. Either way, I’ve been rebranding my hair every 3-7 days for 5 months. Hopefully it works. I have noticed I lose less hair than when I didn’t keep my hair braided.

Hello Seun and the lovely people in the comment section. I need advice please. The back of my hair grows very fast and long (almost to my waist). But the front of my hair only goes to my collar bone and is much shorter than the hair at the back of my head. I don’t know what im doing wrong :( my front hair is stuck at a certain length and I’m sad about it. Don’t know what to do.

do you think its likely that you may be putting more manipulation in the front causing more breakage there? Try doing less to the front and putting it away to keep your hands off if you can. I had the same issue at one point as well
@AshaNoniHadiyah
@AshaNoniHadiyah 3 жыл бұрын
@Aivlis M Hi love, I have experienced the same issue for years and could never understand why. For me it was actually a hormonal issue that was causing the hair to not grow as long/thick in the front and thicker/longer in the back. So it was an internal issue (symptoms of PCOS) and had nothing to do with the products I use or the way I style my hair. This may not be the case for you but it may be worth looking into. I pray this helps in some way! Either way, there is a solution and our hair is still flourishing

Been struggling with my hair lately. For protective styles i usually just cornrow my hair and sew down my wigs, but I've noticed when i go to take down my hair and wet it, i see a lot of strands when i run my hand through it. I don't think it's shedding. Could it be lack of protein? Bc i do a deep conditioner whenever i take my styles down
@LoveEqualsPainx
@LoveEqualsPainx 3 жыл бұрын
It’s shedding and it’s regular, our hair sheds 100-150 strands a day and so when you take down a protective style you can expect to see lots of strands in your hand. It has nothing to do with protein. Protein helps with breakage (short pieces of hair) and it also helps to strengthen the hair and assist with the absorption and retention of moisture. Hair shedding is a natural process, so taking your hair down after a while it’s expected to see quite a bit of hair coming out.

It could be that it's because of lack of moisture,I protective style my hair and wash it up to three times a week.when it's in protective style. I also wash with shampoo condition it and sometimes I just sprinkle with water and no it doesn't smell if you dry it in time.

Wash your hair with baking soda to wash all the chemicals out. Use petroleum jelly on your ends and throughout your hair to retain length. I do that along with the tips in this video. There's more videos on KZbin that discuss the first two suggestions I mentioned. 💚

This is how your wash day should look like : 1. Pre-poo and detangle (you can use Rice water (leave on your hair for 30 minutes), Aloe Vera (1hour+) , a protein treatment(2 hours+) , hot oil treatment(30 minutes+), use what you like and what works for you, etc..) then rinse your hair with cold water if you have high porosity hair 2. Shampoo then rinse your hair with cold water if you have high porosity hair 3. Conditioner then rinse your hair with cold water if you have high porosity hair 4. Deep conditioner(very important) for at least 30 minutes, then rinse your hair with cold water if you have high porosity hair 5. LCO or LOC or LOCS method to moisturize (use the method that works for you)
@marciacole8647
@marciacole8647 3 жыл бұрын
Umm... I'm not sure about your first point, it's too much for one wash day... It's best to alternate between wash days with protein treatments (few) and wash days with moisture treatment (regularly). And NEVER detangle with rice water, I learned that the hard way 😅 rice water is a hard protein treatment that leaves your hair drier than before. Using it too much will lead to protein overload (which happened to me 1,5 years ago 😭). Aloe vera is perfect for detangling, leave in or prepoo. Hot oil treatments are also not to be done too frequently, since to much heat can damage your hair, kinda like regularly cooking your with oil, imagine that 😂 But the rest of your regimen seems good ✅
@makeilah4459
@makeilah4459 3 жыл бұрын
@@marciacole8647 oh sorry lol i mean, I spray my hair with rice water then I apply a detangling conditionner, that’s what helps detangle. I don’t use Rice water to detangle, it doesn’t tangle your hair trust me I know that, I learned that a year ago😭. And the conditioner helps to not dry your hair while using rice water as a pre poo ( that’s a technique I started doing and it works for me)
@makeilah4459

@@marciacole8647 and also I didn’t mean to say to use ALL THOSE TREATMENTS in one day lmao no that’s just too much ofc , I meant to say you can choose ONE of them only to use on wash day and how long you should keep the treatment on your hair. And every thing you said about you need to alternate between wash days with protein treatment and moisture and stuff I know that lol, sorry for not making it clear😭😭 I thought people would understand 🥲

If you’re going to prepoo, then I see no reason for you to use a rinse out conditioner to condition your hair. If you’re going to DC, then why even bother using a rinse out conditioner🥴 Anyways if it works for you, keep on doing it ! I’m just tryna save some else’s coins

I left a very loose twist ponytail in for a few months and my head/scalp started to ache. It felt better when I took the band out. I'd go by what your body tells you. If it feels fine and you're not having adverse effects, do it. But keep it in mind if you start experiencing pain. It could end up being the culprit.

Although I haven’t been natural for too long, I can definitely say that if you scrub your hair in your box braids, it was slowly start to frizz as you pull more strands out of the braids, especially if you have tighter curls. You can still wash you hair slightly if you feel the need, it will not do much damage. With natural hair, you can go a really long time without washing it so I would just say you should leave your braids in for 1- 2 months, take them out when you’re ready and then you should was your hair!
