Thank you for your video! Glad you explain a straight stitch works too and not just a zigzag to attach the elastic. Been confused since there is no explanation in other videos of a straight stitch being strong or also the option of the serger and I’ve done both ways the straight and zigzag and they have seemed to work, but wanted to know the right way. When measuring the elastic to fit your waist, should it be pulled tight with the elastic stretched, or just fitted snug with the elastic not stretched? And, is this best with knit or braided elastic?

Anastasia, what was the length of your elastic. How much smaller was it than the width of your skirt? That's always been my dilemma with using elastic.

We’ll it really depends on how much the elastic stretches. They are all different. I would stretch the elastic around your waist as tight as you want it then make your fabric pattern the size it is stretched out.

Just found you today. :-) subscribed. My project involves: a Rugby Scrum cap, solid tone-black. The dome of the Cap is “round” 9 1/2 inches, I plan to use a 1/2 inseam, totaling 9 3/4 in. Making a flat circle, to fit a “domed” unit. Since this is not a cuffed project, will your technique of this video work? I wish to have a unique item to wear at my hometown college football games, solid black bottom, college colors up top. I have the inventory, just not the wisdom.

Good chance your elastic is bad so it did not stretch back to its original length or the fabric you are using is too thick for the elastic. I would get some new elastic and try again.

Hi. I want to sew elastic for my skirt. I notice the most of the skirts have a machine stitching running on the center of elastic.. I use ordinary tread. If i sew on the elastic, it will not expand when pulled. And my stitching breaks when pulled. It is so hard to pull and sew on the elastic. How is it the ones that are sold are expandabel despite having a stitching on the center of the elastic.

Yes. You want to have a clean seam on the top of your project or at least this way you do not see the elastic from the outside of your project.

Im not following. You’d still have a clean seam and top because the served edge would be folded down into the skirt. I use that method to avoid waistline bulk.

What is the formula to make a plain skirt like that? So, the elastic is your waist size? Then is the skirt width 1.5 times that? Or less? What’s the math to do something simple like this.

We’ll since all elastic stretch’s differently there is no formula but the easy thing to do is pull the elastic as tight as you want it on your body, then stretch it out to see how much pull you have to work with. Now your fabric needs to be shorter then your elastic stretched out. Hope that helps 🩷

@@janesexerciselibrary3612 I used a straight stitch. Trying making your stitch longer & it’s possible your elastic is weak/going bad cause it’s not pulling back to size. Boo 👻
