Sewing 1940s Blouses - 2 Versions from One Pattern

I sewed two 1940s blouses from original 1940s rayon to go with my two 1940s suits. The blouses have classic 1940s details: lightly padded shoulders, fitted waists and a pretty optional jabot.
These are the two blouses I wore with my suits this year to go to Goodwood Revival.

I’m always on the look out for genuine vintage fabrics and like to match the era of the sewing pattern to that of the fabric so it’s always wonderful when this is noticed and appreciated! And that I scouted out the pretty church gardens. Thank you for your encouragement 🥰

I loved both your blouses and the fabrics you used. And I learned I new word "jabot" and that is a lovely added detail to the blouse. Also loved watching your doggies run around and I wish I could let Artemis run around freely like this, but I'm afraid she'd run off! 😅❤❤❤

Thank you very much Arietta and for appreciating the fabrics. They’re rather special! And now for some doggy advice. You must let Artemis off the lead sooner rather than later. It is an anxious moment but they are equally as worried about losing you. You need to get her used to keeping an eye on you when you’re out walking. At some point you need to take a deep breath and unclip the lead!! ❤️❤️❤️ 🐾

Everything is so green because it has rained practically every day for the last six months 😆 I wasn’t sure how the jabot would look but I actually really like it too and now want to make one for my other blouse. Thank you about the scenery. I’m trying to make the effort to go somewhere scenic for my reveals (though in the depths of winter I can’t promise I won’t be back in my living room!!) 💐

Stunning true vintage fabrics, what finds! Both blouses came together beautifully and I couldn't pick a favourite! The blue/brown/pearl white print is really unusual and so effective on 💙🤎🤍 Exquisitely modelled 😌 and what a lovely location! Good to see the dogs again too 😊

Thank you so much Rowan - vintage fabrics are so special, the textures too (though I believe these were achieved with poisonous chemicals!!) Thank you about the modelling, I attracted an audience of bored locals that I would’ve been happy not to have staring at me! The location is another one in Dunster - I dragged my camerawoman aka mum there for the filming! And the dogs of course who were perhaps happier than my mum with the expedition 😆💗💐

No dancing this week Ian! Though I am wanting to learn tap so who knows what you might endure in future episodes! The Singer 201k is known as the Rolls Royce of sewing machines. It’s my favourite. They only stopped making it because the parts were so expensive. It’s practically indestructible. My two assistants are here with me now having their afternoon snooze!

Both blouses are lovely Samantha. I love vintage fabrics, the prints and the textures are so different to modern fabrics aren't they. I also love both your suits, you look great in them. I'd love a 1940s suit so much but I'm plus sized and I haven't yet found one in my size. I will have to keep looking and hoping! Lovely to see your beautiful dogs looking happy again.

Thank you so much Jody, I truly appreciate how supportive you are. Yes vintage fabrics are so different to modern ones. A couple of years ago I ordered fabrics from Spoonflower with wonderful reproductions of 40s novelty prints. But I was shocked by the quality. I will get around to sewing them now I have them but I will stick to buying vintage in future. I hope you find a 40s suit. They’re such a good staple to have. Especially the jackets. When they’re sold separately I’m happy to have one to wear over dresses. So much tailoring has gone into them! It’s squirrel season so the dogs are happier than ever! ❤️

@@Samanthalovestosew oh, for sure, and you could try to find other patterns for jabot since it's just a matter of button holes being in the same place as buttons on the blouse, jabot itself doesn't have to be blouse specific. :)

Those are lovely! Those flower buttons must have been popular. I picked up several cards of different colors recently, too. Love them. You have inspired me to make some more much needed blouses. I never really care for making them for some reason.

I think those flower buttons were popular. I know exactly what you mean about blouses. I don’t know why but they seem less substantial and worthwhile than other garments! I only got round to doing these to have something to go under my suits at Goodwood. Also, while I’m sewing a shirtwaist at the moment I am halfway through two pairs of 1940s pyjamas. I haven’t forgotten!! Video in October for sure! 💐

Thank you so much! I have a 1980s sewing machine (my most modern machine!) that does buttonholes. Though I also often do bound buttonholes or hand worked buttonholes (I have a video coming up on decorative finishes for these) 💐
