I have just watched a dvd called Mrs Harris Went to Paris (2022). The story is set in the 1950s and is about a cleaning lady who wants to buy a Dior dress. She goes to Paris and sits in on a Dior Fashion show. The clothes are beyond beautiful. Many were the actual Dior New Look dresses etc, others were made using Dior patterns. Seeing them reminded me why I prefer vintage patterns. So can totally agree with your idea of leaning towards them too.

The knitted tank is really pretty. Love the color on you. I hope you can find a way to make it work for you. I have a huge vintage pattern collection and many that I want to make are a couple sizes too small. I’ve spent 2023 grading many of them up so I can finally sew them up. I think it’s going to be worth the effort. I hope! Your makes are fun and unique. Your mom definitely gave you a great fix. That small detail is lovely and looks intentional. Love that fabric.

I agree with your feelings about the current indie patterns. I think part of where its coming from is that quick and dirty sew/quick win. I just sewed a Vogue patterns winter coat, took me 5 full days, and while it's extremely satisfying that its done, i almost ran out of steam while sewing the 22 🤯🤯🤯 buttons on. I can totally see the appeal of a sewing palate cleanser which may take me just a few hours from go to WHOA 💪🏻🤭 I think its good to mix it up!

I am so happy I found you.....I'm vintage 🤩....at 72 years old and love the patterns you choose. Wish I had saved some 😂. I'm keen on the contemporary like Style Arc too.

Totally feel you on the indie patterns. I get that they are trying to appeal to a beginner market for sales reasons but it does get old. And I LOVE elastic waist linen pants, but you can only make so many pairs 😂

I love the pattern of the material in your dress. Looks so expensive. I'm watching all these podcasts of super knitters and beautiful garments sewn. I'm tempted by it all. Although I have always knitted. I bought material a couple of years ago it's still waiting to be made into something. 😢 your work is lovely.

I really enjoyed the section you did on the menswear pink top. Not only did I love what you made, it was such a clever idea and has got me thinking. I hate having to do SBAs but have to because I am like 'small'! Adapting male patterns would obviate the need. Genius!

The pink tank knit: oh, the frustration of putting effort into a lovely handmade garment, and then the materials misbehave in normal wear! Hate it. What would you think of lengthening the shoulder straps long enough to cross in the back? Bringing the neckline closer in to the neck might reposition the expanding underarm size, at least for a while. As I look at the original pattern photos, the excess material in the underarm area isn't all that surprising. The design almost needs some kind of short-row "darts" near the bust. The silk jersey dress is terrific. Before you said anything about the sewing process I was admiring the dotted stripe around the yoke and wondering if it came out of the yardage or was separate trim, and where I could get something like that. Your mom's idea made this pattern sing. The contrast shows off the dress lines and main print. You could say that the fabric + trim make this vintage pattern look fresh. It's not a 1970's costume; it's 1970's-inspired but definitely contemporary. For this fellow vintage pattern fan, that's the tricky path to navigate. Not to end up looking comical, like the cartoon people on the cover of the pattern envelope.
@StephSewn

This is SUCH a good idea- thank you! I will try repositioning the straps if the fabric continues to stretch. I also read this comment to my mom and she was really smiling ☺️

Hello Steph, I so agree about boxy shapes! What is the use of making your own clothes if they are not customized to your own shape? I am more of a knitter, have found a pattern by Hinterm STEIN that features different options for waist shaping "Beyond the dunes"., Also, I so wish I had held on to my mother's 70's patterns 😅. Thank you, take care.

They all came out so awesome! I would never have thought of using a menswear pattern but it looks great! And the art blouse, omg I was wondering how you would use that fabric and the placement is perfect. So glad the sheep got a prominent place, they're amazing. Everything came out so good. Well done!

Yea, Mom! The trim not only hides any imperfection, but makes the front look more amazing! I've always said sewing is about problem solving... I'm loving camp shirts & a v-neck has always been the best shape for me--the 70s seem to have done it best for shape, but glad of all the fabric choices we have now! (Though some fabrics I have in my stash themselves are nearly vintage...). Love your input on the patterns & jeans are on my list, too--i want to try the Lander's pants, but loving the darts in the C&N (?), but not their front pockets--too small & high to be useful! So will be modifying some for style, as well as fit, and want to make a bodice block so can focus on design vs fit, finally! (Tok me only decades to realize I need FBA, thanks to internet, learned about that & so many cool things since I was in school after sewing no longer OK thing to teach, and mostly self taught as I started my career (late 80s)... And at the time, nothing in TV sewing shows talked about fit! Loving youTube!!!

I'm so happy there were some recommendations which you liked! And I think you are right about the chalk and notch jeans pockets. Now that I have two pairs and have worn them more, it is a bit annoying to not be able to pop my phone into them.

Steph, thank you for the C&N Isle jeans suggestion. Your knitted top is lovely on you now, but unfortunate that it grows, the color is lovely. I really like your sewing suggestions, very useful, specifically using knit fabric when your pattern might not be the right size. Perfect!

Fit 1 was badass! I guess it takes a vintage menswear pattern in that color to not look like a “boyfriend shirt”. When you said the stretch denim had more “wiggle room” I chuckled. “On ya giblets” had me rolling! 😂 Another great video.
