Hi, nice vid, I have a tip you may like. Sorry a bit late .. To correctly bed the brush on the copper commutator, wrap your 400 grit paper around the copper then push the brush on while you rotate the rotor, this way you will get the exact curvature required. Take care ...

My brother and me did the same thing !....We also used are Dad's mennen skinbracer after shave to clean out the motors and the we would stick the sled runner things directly on to the transformer box and wind them out to full speed ..We had a drag strip that we set up and it was measured to scale of a real 1/4 mile ..We would soak the spongy slicks in after shave and do burn outs and make the tires sticky

We have smoke coming out of our vintage Brother motor (over 40 years old) I stripped it down after watching your informative video cleaned the commutator and filed the brushes, it was a little dirty inside but thought i'd cleaned most of carbon residue off, maybe this old machine is ready for the breakers yard. (Brother has confirmed that replacement motor is not available)

This is a great video - thank you! I have cleaned a lot of vintage singer motors/machines. I have a vintage 830 Record Bernina. When I step on the pedal and hold it full speed the motor runs fine then winds down, runs and winds down. It sound like I am lifting off the pedal in even intervals, but I am holding the pedal down the whole time. I am thinking/hoping all I need to do is clean the motor and put in new brushes. I HOPE it's not the pedal b/c I have never fixed a pedal before! (:

Good Video. Oil cannot dissolve into "bronze (brass?)" fitting. Chemically impossible! My theory: Oil seeps around edges of the fitting. Note the hole for oil on both sides of the motor. My motor has the same two holes and my brass fitting stops short of the end of case.

You are wise not to use an abrasive on the commutator segments. That black you see in the copper is conductive graphite, formed from the brushes. If you take the commutator down to shiny copper, the brushes will need to reform that film again. That wears the brush down. Use a pick to scrape between the commutator segments. They are micarta and if they are allowed to stick up higher than the copper, the micarta will lift the brush, then arcing will persist. So, clean between those segments.
@not2fast4u2c
@not2fast4u2c 6 жыл бұрын
If I was re building a bigger motor like a car starter ..I would use a lathe and turn down the copper ..I would also be using new brushes that do wear down a bit as they break in ..I also would use a piece of a coping saw blade to re cut the slots between the segments

My apologies. I was wrong! There are oil-infused Bronze bushings with SAE oil. Oilite is one brand name. Antique sewing machines in the 1930s had a oil/grease reservoirs. Bronze oil-infused bushing was developed in the 1930s. My 70 year old machine (like yours) has two similar bronze bushings (each end). Luckily for me, the tangs of the 2 brackets are still holding. My westinghouse motor (circa 1950) has 2 oil holes just on top of the case dimples. Manual says to add a drop of oil into the 2 holes yearly.

@@not2fast4u2c I am a chemist and the general principle is "like dissolves like." Oil as a liquid cannot "dissolve into" bronze, a solid metal alloy (mixture of metals). Likely there are nano pores throughout the bronze that are "infused" with oil. Example: Oil does not dissolve in water. An emulsifying agent will disperse the oil throughout the water. I am nitpicking, admittedly. I am also struggling with the refurb of my Mother's old sewing machine motor and your video was very helpful.

@@annareuter7639 They make bushings from bronze that are small little pieces pressed together which leaves space for the oil to soak in I think they are called sintered ? bronze

Hello, I know this video is filmed a long time ago but I hope you can reply. I have the same motor. I have opened it and cleaned everything. I have assembled it back together and that metal shaft that sticks out is moving back and forth, if I pull it by hand. I'm not sure if it used the happen before I didn't check. Just like in yours, there are no bearings, only this hole that I also had to tighten as it was wobbly. It also moves when the motor is on, so in order for the bushes to be in the correct position you have to push it slightly when it's on. Is that supposed to happen, is it the design? Maybe when I'll connect the belt, that will hold it in place? I would appreciate it, if you could help me. Thank you

@@not2fast4u2c i just did that but wasn't sure if it's supposed to move or not. As there isn't anything in the design that would stop it from moving. I actually had to add 2 metal washers and the one that was already there for it to stop moving. Thank you for your reply
