I've always envied curvy girls as I've always had a straight figure...thicker waist, smaller hips even now that I'm older and rounder! That said, you look terrific on camera! Love jumpers, love Rowenta and love the sound that old sewing machine makes. So happy to have found your channel.

Thank you! Fun thing, I was always horrified to be on the camera. I was always the one taking the pictures so that I did not have to be in them. Part of the reason I started making these videos was to conquer that fear. And yes, sewing is such an ASMR hobby :)

@@mybucoliclife We don't see ourselves as others do - what we see in the mirror isn't what we see in real life either. We get used to the mirror image of ourselves. And our eyes always zoom straight to the things we don't like about ourselves when we look at photos or footage. Most of us hate the sound of our recorded voice too. You've got nothing to be concerned about as far as I can see or hear. Your voice is soothing and friendly and happy, you look great on camera - face and figure - and after seeing a nearly all of your videos now (binge-watching since I found you!) I'm convinced you'd look great in a burlap potato sack with twine for a belt. Thank you for showing us the "real, all-round view on somebody doing real movements" of how these patterns make up - rather than just how they look in optimally chosen poses, from the best angles.

As an older sewer who has recently taken up sewing again in retirement, I find your videos so helpful, especially all the little tips. I love the idea of using lace as a binding and the tip on checking your machine tension. So helpful! One tip I can give in return is to use pinking shears instead of clipping curved seams. You don’t have to cut too close and it makes for a much smoother line. I was finding that unless I clipped every 1/2” or so, I would get straight bits but with pinking shears it is so even. Could you give a little history of your sewing past please as I’m guessing you have some tailoring training because you are so knowledgeable. Thanks again.

You know, I think when I got my first serger (way back in the 80's) and I put my pinkers aside I just forgot this. Thank you for reminding me. Going to get those big shears out and use them more often :) As for my sewing history, it is a vast and unstructured enigma :) I've done everything from wedding dresses and bridesmaids, ballet costuming, historical costuming, men's shirts, some upholstery, all around family sewing, suiting, some quilting, and everything in between. But I find that as soon as I put a price tag on my sewing work, all the joy seems to vanish out of the process, so now I just sew whatever I feel like :)

I like it that the pocket blends - it's hiding in plain sight without looking like it's trying to. It's a spy pocket! I really like the tip about testing tension on the bias too. I've done the "pull until it breaks" test but always on the straight grain. The bias makes much more sense. Thank you! I've always aimed for being able to consistently turn right angles that have sharp, 90-degree corners on both the top and bottom. Now I'm keen on doing a comparison of the two methods to see which one I find gets my tensions where they need to be the fastest.

This is a great pinafore, I agree with you. Love your version. I have made this pinafore, and found if you put a line of stitching horizontally across the belt loops, and put the straps in the 2 different loops created, it stops the straps bunching up in the back. This time of year there is not a lot I can do outside because it is too cold (when I was taking the outside pictures it was 19 F) So I tend to sew more. Once May hits and the frost danger is over I spend much more time outside so I might slow down my sewing then. But I enjoy it :)

I have been binge watching your videos today. I love sewing clothes and have found your videos to be very helpful as you share so many tips and I think so many times "why have I never thought to do that ". I love this little pinafore dress....even though the instructions seem unnecessarily confusing . As I have got older ( and fatter ! ) I am more aware of the problems of finer fabrics so I would really like to see how you could make a lining. I love it when I get a glimpse of fellow sewists lifestyles around the world. I have 3 of the 5 patterns I have seen you sew so far. Could be an indication I have far too many patterns. As we in the Southern Hemisphere go into autumn I think this pinafore would be a great option for layering. I bought a cotton/linen for this project.

So I put a thick piece of leather under my pattern piece when I use it. Yes, it would definitely go thru ther fabric without that. They are great though.

You could use a slip insfead of making a lining. It saves a lot of material if you can wear the same slip with all your dresses instead of making linings for each one. Of course there are times where a dress does benefit from having its own lining especially where you attach it at the hem but thats normall on heavier fabrics.

Thank you! So, I use the lace honestly just because I like the look. And it is helpful. Like on this jumper the hem is slightly curved and by sewing on the lace at the edge as I stretch it, it gathers the curve in a little so that I can sew the other side of the lace on flat and all the curvy fullness is taken in easily and the hem lies flat. Now there are lots and lots of ways to do a hem, and I do different ones on other types of garments, but in general, I like the colorful lace tapes. They just make me smile :)

I have watched a few of your videos and want to thank you for the detail. I am returning to sewing from many years away and things are a bit different. A couple of questions. You used some iron on tape a couple of episodes ago. What are the particulars on that. Also, you serged around the pieces of a garment before sewing…which makes sense!…but it looked like it was not cutting fabric. Is that so? And what would you do if you didn’t have a serger? Thanks for any help!

Hello! So glad you found me. So first the tape. It is a woven fusible stay tape. Woven so it will not stretch. The brand I have been buying is called Sewkeyse and is on amazon, ebay and their own site www.emmaseabrooke.com . It is a little pricey so I am looking out for alternatives. If I find a suitable one I'll post it :) Then on the serging. You are correct, I am not cutting fabric off. I use the serger blade just to nip off any stray threads and such but not really to cut my fabric in general. I want to try to maintain the seam allowances as they are supposed to be by design. So the blade IS down and "cutting" but not too much. :) If I did not have a serger I would still be making sure that all of my exposed edges were finished in some way. The easiest to me would be to run a zig zag stitch down the edges. I hope that helps :)

You will. Just make sure you cut out the same view I did, so that you don't need a zipper and take it one step at a time. And if you get frustrated, walk away for a bit. You'll do fine 😊
