amazing young lady who I'm blessed to call my wife

I love your clapper. One day my husband came home from a farm auction and asked me to help unload the truck. I took one look in and squealed, with delight "you bought me clappers!" He of course had no idea what I was talking about. He had bought a load of 2x4's and other boards. All looked like new and were various sizes. After he had loaded them, there were little 3 to 8 " long scrap pieces that he had just thrown in the truck box so they weren't left laying around. Those were what I spied. So after I helped unload the big boards, I went through my "treasure" and chose about a half dozen of the nicest pieces in a variety of sizes. They made the best clappers ever. Another time, he asked me what I was looking for in his drive shed, and I told him pattern weights. When I showed him thw E washers, he said take what I want. I told him "no, you have to make them pretty for me and paint them for my birthday". So he painted them bright red and gave them to me for my birthday. He even found some other metal objects that he thought would work and painted them too. I'm so high maintenance. Lol. But I do enjoy "shopping" for sewing and craft items among his things in the barn. Its amazing what I can use.

I knew we would be firm friends when i saw my giant black cat Carlos has a barn doppelganger on the other side of the world. I have made this dress prior to your video twice but was confused about the collar and sleeve, your tutorial is so clear and easy to follow I now really understand a lot more about sewing well and neatly. I picked up at least 5 skills that I can use forever in this. You did a great job, I'm looking forward to your other videos, thanks you so much!

Marie,, this is a lovely dress and I really enjoyed watching you make it. Again, I really appreciate your slow and steady instruction and the way you take the time to demonstrate what you are doing and how you are tweeking things to make the process better or easier for you. I learnt alot from the way you pressed the lining fabric to the fashion fabric,, the gathering thread trick and even your elastic joining to a piece of fabric trick. I do want to ask what you reason was for choosing not to line the back bodice? I also would love to see a tour of your sewing room and in particular your beautiful old sewing machine, because I am addicted to all things vintage sewing. I want to say that i love seeing the outside of your place and the red barn, we dont have here in Australia intrigues me :) Kind regards Saleena
@mybucoliclife2 жыл бұрын
Hi Saleena! Thanks! Glad the videos were helpful. I chose not to line the back because I didn't think it was necessary. Basically I wanted to make sure that bra lines and things were not visible from the front, but when I was looking at it I felt that the back piece was opaque enough that it did not need it. If I was lining for structure I would have definitely lined both front and back. As weather gets warmer I'll take more outside shots of the farm. It is pretty in the spring, so soon!

Lessons for today My gathering foot has a little hole in it to and now l know what it’s for and how to use it. I can not understand why I’ve never tried to work that out before and just ignored it until now Now to play - thank you Marie. Can I say Pattern matching is my thing. I will spend literally days working out how to best match. Tedious I know but it is what I get enormous pleasure from. Can I give wee hit. For a straight seam like on the skirt part of the dress move the pattern sideways by the required seam allowance. Explanation: lay the tissue pattern piece onto the single layered fabric. Get the land marks you like for instance the flower motif at the centre. Slightly mark (pin/pen) the corners so you keep your bearings and remove tissue pattern. Do not cut at this point. Lay the tissue on next piece of fabric matching the pattern to the 1st piece of fabric. Once mofit matches on both pieces of fabric move the tissue over sideways by the required seam allowance for instance the regular 5/8” seam allowance. You can move the tissue on either piece of the fabric but only ever on one piece. When you now go to cut they will look out of Sync by the 5/8” Sew seams together with edges matching as usual When you open the seam the mofits will be in sync at the seam line. You can test the layout with two thin strips of fabric edges folded (as they would be if seamed already) and see how much overlap is needed to get the match at the seam line. It’s a good idea to do that as sometimes the fabric pattern ie mofit can be off grain or have a multitude of not immediately noticeable variances. Marie you have taught me so much about construction which I so appreciate. I’ve now gone and international ordered the book you refer to at times - Ouch! Enjoyed the video learnt heaps as usual - Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and skill I so admire it.

Hi, I have also just found your channel and as a new sewer I have learnt so much. Could you tell me why the pattern tells you to cut two pieces for the back and front rather than cut on the fold please.
@mybucoliclife2 жыл бұрын
It's just the way it is designed. The pieces are pretty wide, I can't remember if they would fit on a fold... Sometimes on a pattern you can make a judgement call and cut it out on the fold if the centers are on the straight of grain and perfectly straight.

If you move the grain line on the pattern piece to line up with the fabric pattern … won’t your cutout piece be skewed..off grain and it won’t “hang” right.
@mybucoliclife7 ай бұрын
Sometimes it is about choosing the lesser of 2 evils. If it is only slightly off I usually go with the print. If it is terribly off grain and a loose print, I won't try to use it for a nice garment.
@kimbelinag2 жыл бұрын
I was super disappointed with this pattern - or at least how my fabric choice went together. The instructions say poplin and shirting are appropriate, but I disagree! My crisp, light-medium shirting was far too heavy and totally wrong for this pattern! It's boxy and not attractive. And the collar band simply would NOT go on without being full of puckers - I gave up after 3 hours of fussing and drafted a facing and called it good. It's fine for around the house or walking the dog with a coat over it, but I sure won't be wearing it to work! If you make this pattern, stick to a fabric like the one in the video.
@mybucoliclife2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry it turned out badly in your fabric. Maybe after it is washed a few times it will soften up. And yes, that neck band is the hardest part to get smooth the way they designed it.
@kimbelinag2 жыл бұрын
@@mybucoliclife the stiffer fabric also made the waist seam really bulky and a but awkward. I'd love to figure out a way to tack it down but it would show. I think I'm gong to make a bigger sash to see if that helps the proportions. At least it's comfy and my topstitching came out nice. 😁
