This is an excellent tutorial. There is a science to everything. I wasn't doing the last step. Thank you!

This actually helped me a lot. My last button was with a broken loop tho, I only noticed when already had done the two initial stiches hahaha.

Stan_sprinkle - my husband always used dental floss in a pinch, super strong but not exactly a dark color!

Thanks for that. Shank button fell off my pea coat. I figured a man oughtta know how to sew it back on... follow your steps and I don't think the button is going anywhere now

So I was wrong. These shank buttons keep falling off. I don't know if it's my sewing skills or the thread, but the threads just keep breaking. One challenge I'm having is making sure I'm going through the same holes each time, because of it's a dark coat and hard to see, and because the needle is going through two layers of fabric. I've gotten better at that, but still, it seems the shank button tends to twist and put strain on the threads. Do you have any "common mistakes" guidelines? I'm going crazy

stan_sprinkle Are you using button/ Carpet thread? It's super thick and can withstand a lot of strain.

I guess I need to look into that. I'm not sure of the quality of my thread.
