Hi Alison, I' m a beginner , glad to come across yr channel. Last week I tried to sew wrapping for something using a slightly stretchy fabric , I abandon it because it skips. Glad if you could advise on the needle type .

Hi Rita, If you're using a universal needle and are skipping stitches, try a ballpoint or jersey needle. If you're using a ballpoint or jersey needle and are skipping stitches, try a stretch needle. If you're using a stretch needle and are skipping stitches, try a universal needle. Also check that it is a new needle (not blunt) and it has been inserted correctly. Ensure that you are usung the correct size for the weight of the fabric. Larger numbers for heavier weight fabrics. Smaller numbers for lighter weight fabrics. Alison xx

Sometimes when I use a stretch needle or a ball point/Jersey needle I still have skip stitches. I usually end having to use stabilizer.

Is this on fabrics with a really high lycra content? I've actually had more success with a universal needle when sewing high lycra content fabrics. Which is the opposite of what I would have expected. Do you use tear away stabilizer? Alison xx

@@loveandstitchesstudio Probably not. Fabric was market as knit and I forgot the blend or mix of fabric type. But it wasn’t as stretchable as Lyrca yet I was still having skip stitches. My recent project had the same issue too. I used a water soluble stabilizer. They’re like magic!

Thanks Alison, that's really helpful and explains a lot! Is French terry classed as medium or heavy weight, and does that require a jersey needle rather than a stretch? Hope you're okay! 💐

Hi Lucy, I would say most french terry would be medium weight. Usually a jeresy needle will work well for french terry, but sometimes if there is a higher lycra/elastane content and you find it's skipping stitches; then use a stretch needle. Alison xx
