The very first quilt I ever attempted (and have yet to finish) was made with this kind of block. As someone else pointed out, it's called a Manx block and it originated from the Isle of Man which is located in the middle of the Irish Sea. There's generally no batting (although for a little bit of body I would probably use flannel) as it's sometimes used as a summer blanket, and the backing makes it nice and lightweight. In any event, about 10 years ago a quilter named Donna Poster (her videos are still on KZbin) had patterns called "foldy" stuff quilts in various block styles, and since it looked intriguing, I gave it a go. Time consuming but easy once you get into the rhythm of it. Laura, you've inspired me to get done the few blocks I have left to do and finish that quilt. Thank you!

Hey there, Laura, You have such a lovely voice and use it so well in your tutorials. It's so soothing. I watched this in awe! First of all, I am more I usually prefer the lighter colors of summer, even in the winter since everything else is dark. It's refreshing in the winter. However, I soon changed my mind when I saw the finish of the block. You could almost call the block "night and day", except that's another block. But it is so lovely. You didn't mention how much fabric you started out with at the beginning. Do you have an estimate of yardage both for the heat pad and maybe a quilt, even a lap quilt. I want to make a heat a pad for hot pots first and then, if it doesn't take too much fabric, perhaps try to make a quilt. But know that would take forever and I'm already 81 years old so don't have a lifetime to spare. What a wonderful, very different quilt you've presented to us. Congratulations! And yes, I've seen the Manx quilts being made an they're not quite the same. This is so beautiful!!! Thank you, Laura.

Can you make a full quilt?
@SewVeryEasy Жыл бұрын
Yes but it might get heavy
@capablemaria Жыл бұрын
That is a great way to quilt at the same time. Would it work with 2½ inch strips? Or would you need to adjust the measurements & by how much.
@jeanrichards8042 Жыл бұрын
I'm wondering the same thing... I'd like to do a lap quilt but have the folds be 1" instead of 1/2" so it won't be so heavy. I'll have to do some math and play around with it. I loved the video though, 1st of hers I've seen!
@capablemaria Жыл бұрын
Thinking about it I think 3/4 inch marking would work. Not sure about the strip lengths though, but you could always cut-as-you-go.

I have a 1-sided fusible foam interfacing dilemma. Do you have any suggestions how to join 2 pieces of said interfacing that will widen it to accommodate use in a large tote bag? Thank you.
@thewaldens90 Жыл бұрын
Maybe a zigzag stitch to join the two pieces? My quilt circle members salvaged batting for charity quilts using this method. Google "fusible batting tape" and see if you think that could work. All the best with your tote bag project.

@karenfranko5671 Жыл бұрын
Can you do this method with a “flat” not folded strip, or isn’t it as nice looking when it’s flat vs folded? I do love your block,however.
@ceciliaschleicher278 Жыл бұрын
To get a perfect Log Cabin block, FPP is the way to go!
@karenfranko5671 Жыл бұрын
@@ceciliaschleicher278 I do realize FFP is more accurate (the log cabin is my favorite block) and I love her presentation. FFP isn’t my question. It was could you do it with the 1 1/2 inch strips flat, not folded, or doesn’t it work as well that way. (In your opinion does it need the folded strips to look as nice?)
@ceciliaschleicher278 Жыл бұрын
@Karen Franko you can use any size strips for log cabin. I have done log cabin in 2.5 and 1.5 strips and both look good - but the best using FPP. What makes the Pleated Log Cabin look so amazing is the 3D effect.
@melindaostergren8115 Жыл бұрын
I had to look up FPP. And I learned that it stands for many different things until I added ‘quilting’ in the query. 😉
