She's culturally right, and as long as it stays in the court of public opinion she will win. However the commission went too far with their action. None of them can legally force him to say anything he doesn't want to say. Can't you see how this sort of thing could be taken and all sorts of wrong directions? For example I'm landlord by the name of Al Mikey, appears before then and tells them that they have to address him as Lord Al Mikey. By the precedent that they just set they must now call this guy Lord Al Mikey.

Just my personal opinion, but I don't think it matters and is disrespectful to other people with a doctorate degree to place them on a lower pedestal. This is coming from someone who has multiple family members who are MDs and have Doctorates in other fields. The word Doctor comes for the Latin word docere which means teach. Doctors throughout history were those who taught and learned, it never mattered if it was for medicine or not that is a recent interpretation. While MDs do rounds and exams that are extremely difficult, students going for their doctorates also have obstacles. They spend years on their thesis to become an expert and have to defend their life's work in front of a panel of established experts who basically tear it to pieces in order for the student to prove how well they can defend it, because they have to be an expert in order to earn said degree. MDs do amazing work. But doctors are doctors, people who dedicate their life to learning and teaching as the root word suggests. MDs are called medical doctors for a reason. We just refer to them all as Doctor because there's no reason to go around saying Medical Doctor Johnson. Or Public Health Doctor Rosario. Or even Medical Doctor of Cardiovascular Disease Dr. Yamamoto. They all dedicated their lives to learning beyond what they obtain from school. This is just my opinion though, and everyone is entitled to their own.

She was asking him to validate a piece of information PUBLICLY that she presented, that he had no additional information on. This is a tricky ask to make. What if she had made it up for influence? In this case she didn't, but other people would. What if it was a resident who wanted to pretend to have a title in order to be more influential on the audience? @@karrotyy I don't think there is a reason to ask her to certify her studies. She was not speaking as a doctor (medicine) about covid, they were talking about a water sanitation issue in the community. The fact of asking to be called a doctor is simple: it takes years of study, effort and work to obtain that title and the least you can ask is to be recognized. The simple fact that you say "he could not check if she really is a doctor" is already disrespectful because you are questioning her word and I see no reason to do so. From my perspective, he was disrespectful, sexist and racist as well as foolish. The fact that he was fired by the rest of the commission speaks volumes.

@Mike Smith it's PhD degree. A title that a mediocre guy like both of us probably will never get. It might sound selfish , but you have rights to be called with your degree simply because you earned it. People may call others any kind of name, but in this case Dr Rosario wants people to call her with that title. When people ask you to call them by their preferred name and you decided to call them otherwise, it is indeed not a crime, but disrespectful. It's not about political correctness, it's about having decent attitude.

This was not just about disrespecting this woman. It was about trying to undermine her argument on the subjecto of public health - a subject in which her doctorate proves her knowledge, standing and qualifications. He sought to undermine her argument by ignoring her status as an academic. This is how some men have tried to deal with intelligent women when they feel inadequate themselves. @@tj-wy7mj they seemed to be talking about the quality of the water for the neighborhood, and he, being the local official, was dismissive about that as well. So... if her request that day was annoying to him, then it's even worse, that would make him not only systemic racist, jealous and disrespectful, but also a selfish, greedy soab.

Maybe he didn't realize that her doctorate is granted by schools of medicine. What I do think is a bit much is when a non-medical doctor insists on being called doctor. My dad was an elementary school teacher and a fellow teacher got her doctorate in Education and insisted that the rest of the staff address her as doctor in front of the kids.

Anyone with a PhD has earned the title. The word "Doctor" is literally connected to a PhD holder. Medical practitioners are the ones that co-opted the word.

@@idontevenhaveapla7224 Obviously, but the fact of the matter is that few non-medical doctors *insist* on being called Dr So and So. My best friend has a doctorate in Art History, but would never in a million years insist that anyone call him Doctor. I know several others too who don't use the title in their name.
