Dear Mr.Bernstein, I'm a middle-aged piano learner. I've watched your documentary film and read your book"WITH YOUR OWN TWO HANDS". My teacher lend me the book, which had your autograph dated of December 4, 1999 on its cover and gave me the piano score of this Cantata. Your performance soothes and purifies my mind. I'd express my heartful thanks to you and my teacher for teaching me the joy of playing the piano.

Dear. Mr. Seymour Bernstein. I live in South Korea and I am not a musician but I love classical music too much. I'm just reading the book you interviewed with Andrew Harvey and listening to your Bach cantata. The true story in the book and the Bach cantata are so beautifully combined. Thank you for guiding the end of the book to this music. I think I have a deep and long conversation with people who are similar to my soul. I was so happy. Although we can not meet directly, thank you very much for letting me know about the existence of my soul repository. And I was especially impressed with your frank confession about your father. It was a great help in determining the direction of my life. And I am very grateful for sharing this communication opportunity. I think I can love my life again. And I need to see the movie again. Dear. Mr. Seymour Bernstein. Thank you so much again. 😊

Dear Mr. Bernstein, just like many people that already commented, I saw your movie recently in Belgium. I as well was moved, by your music, your approach to music, and your kindness and warmth. Last week with a colleague, we were discussing housing prices in New York (where I have lived for some time) with our Phd students, and when I mentioned one-room apartments, my colleague started talking about what he had seen in "a" movie about "a" pianist. I immediately recognized what he was talking about, and we found out that both of us had initially started watching not from the start but somewhere later, while we were zapping, as both of us had been drawn into the movie after seeing only a couple of seconds of your warm, enthusiastic personality. I then mentioned that I had found out what the very last piece of the movie was by holding my phone with shazam by the television set, and it turned out that my colleague had done exactly the same :) Both of us love Bach, and that surprising coincidence is just another sign of how universally the beauty of your interpretation and performance is enjoyed. Thank you so much, and I wish you all the best. Bjorn

Hello, Mr. Bernstein, I watched the movie yesterday. I became completely speechless so much being touched with your performances and very honest and sincere words addressed kindly to us. The last cantata was really breathtaking. A funny thing that happened to me is this. I wanted to play the piano as soon as I could. I could have gone back home, but I could not wait. When the movie finished I dashed to a music store near the theater and fortunately got reservation for just one hour for a Steinway Model D. I do not fully understand yet what this irresistible instinctive feeling and behavior aroused by you. You have the power to make people a holistic existence where the brain, emotions, body, body parts, hands, fingers and plausibly all the other parts are not chopped off but rather tied together. Oh, I would like to tell you how much I love the last words of yours: "I had never dreamt that I could touch the blue sky".

Dear Mr. Bernstein. I have made my heaviest and most important decision of my life today. I was working as a tailor in Scabal Korea, for almost about more than an year after I graduated university. I majored composition in my university, but after my military service and as I became Junior in university, everything seemed so blurry, I really couldn't see what to do after my graduation, i was frustrated. So, I decided to learn tailoring, so I could at least make some money. When I was a senior in the university, I almost just threw away my music life and was so deep in the fields of tailoring. And, successfully, I got myself a job in a decent fabric company named Scabal. But was never enough, it was too hard for me to stay away from the music. I started working there at 09/11/18, till now, Im still working. But, i felt that there's this certain limits that i can't take, I just couldn't bear this life without music and struggling with other people. First two or three months were okay, but... So I almost killed myself in November of last year. My life seemed even more blurrier than ever, I thought having a decent job would make my life easier, but clearly I was wrong. It was blurrier more than my life before i had this job. So, as i was having a hard time, I suddenly recalled the movie, 'seymour: An introduction' which i have watched in the theatre when i was a soldier. It was a long time ago, but I still remember that i found important meanings of my life as a student of music university at that time. I decided to download it and watch it again and... I cried a lot. I have finally realized that I can't live without this, music. And.. i ve realized that i misssed something really important in my life. living without piano was like living without soul for me. So, as I said, I have made my heaviest decision of my life, I finally managed to tell my boss that I want to quit this job and be a pianist. It was such a hard decision for me to make, but your sincereness and wisdom that you've showed in the movie.. really lead me here. Thank you so much Mr.Bernstein. You have changed the course of my life. you shall be never be forgotten.

That Friskin arrangement is out of print. Besides, I never performed it that way. My transcripton is exactly what I played in he documentary. A Korean company is making a documentary on me to commemorate 75 years of the Korean war. I will be coming to Seoul probably in late June to complete the shooting of the film.. Try to find where I will be staying and introduce yourself to me so that I can thank you in person for writing tsuch a deep, heartfelt letter. My warmest wishes to you. (see.less@verizon.net) Seymour

@@SeymourBernstein Dear Mr Bernstein, what a honorable gift that you replied to me like this! To be honest I was not expecting such a warm and heartfelt response like this. Today is the day of the Korean new year, and this means a lot, because it's the day of new year, and i am just about to begin my new journey on piano from now on. Really, Thank you so much. I feel like that i can achieve my goals that i've set, because of your warm response. You told me that we can find our salvations in ourselves, in the movie. And you were absolutely right. There was a time that i believed in salvation, which was given by others, such as religion, work, reputations.. But i've just realized that I'm only able to get my salvation by looking in myself. And how? - only with my craftmanship and effort towards artistry. To be honest my parents and friends are worried about me because they think that i might not be able to achieve nothing by playing piano. But here's what I think : achieving something means nothing to me, the process(efforts and practicing) is only thing that i want, so that i can find true myself by doing it, and so that it could be the only reason that i'm existing in this world. I just think.. that my reputations and money will just follow up naturally, If i devote myself fully in music. Once again, Thank you so much for your responses, and yes, it would be my honour if we can meet in person and I can thank you for your kindness. And my E mail address is : jkl6004@naver.com If you send me the piece i will be practicing for sure :) warm regards, Albert Jeong

Such divine beauty in the piece and in your playing. I have just finished reading your conversations with Andrew Harvey, having watched your documentary with Ethan Hawke. What a perfect ending to the book. Thank you for sharing all with us. I am wondering if it's possible to purchase your annotated piece online (as a pdf)? I'm based in Hong Kong, and shipping may take a while. I would very much like to learn this piece. Thank you. All my best, Pia

Dear msjadegarden, thank you for your generous response to my playing. And thanks for inquiring about Gottes Zeit ist die aller beste Zeit. The original edition of this transcription has been out of print for some time. Besides, my performance is vastly changed from the original transcription. I therefore made my own transcription which you heard me perform in the documentary. It is available from my publisher. Go to this Website: MANDUCA MUSIC PUBLICATIONS.COM Click on my name, and you will find the transcription. All good wishes to you. Seymour

+Seymour Bernstein Dear Seymour, the way you play this piece, I can only describe as a love wound, and I am not talking about romantic love, but more in connection to the Cantata's title. This is one of the most beautiful musical pieces I've ever listened to! Thank you for your talent and wisdom! I've seen some of your interviews about your documentary and I cannot wait to watch it. Thank you! PS. Where can I buy online the music sheet for this particular version?

Dear Mr. Seymour Bernstein, I am a 34 year old musician and filmmaker from Mexico City. The film Ethan Hawke, who is a great inspiration of mine, made about and with you, is one of the most beautiful pieces about music, art and life I have ever encountered. I found in it many answers to questions I didn't´t even know how to ask. And this Prelude in particular has been the only music I listen to while writing a little short film about the untimely death of an artist. I was wondering, What does it mean to you? My deepest admiration to you. JH

My dear Jeronimo, your note moved me so deeply that I had to send it to Ethan Hawke. Music of course is a language unlike anything we know about in the material world. For me, it is a language of feeling and allows us to express feelings within us that can't be expressed in any other way. For me, this music and everything Bach writes is the only religion I know. This particular piece encapsulates the meaning of life and at the same time the torment of the world. My deepest thanks for your note.Seymour

I kept listening to this piece and it kept me connected all the way until I finished de script. We will be shooting in a few weeks. It would be an honor to send it to you once it´s done and hear your opinion. Thank you! JH

@@SeymourBernstein Dear Seymour. It is me again after a couple, very interesting years, hoping this finds you well. The short film I told you about in this thread a few years back is now ready to go to festivals, but sadly I never heard from your representatives. So this is me hoping you could tell me who to call or contact so we can get the rights to use your lovely piece. I wish you all the best as always. JH

Dear Mr. Bernstein, I write owing all of my thanks to you. The wisdom and insight that you bestowed in "Seymour: An Introduction" played an important role in shifting my perspective on life and art. It reinvigorated me during a time I needed it most. Much like your friend Ethan Hawke, I am a 21-year-old actor/writer/filmmaker myself and currently working on a short film that embodies Bach's BWV 106: a college student undergoes a spiritual void during a harsh, bleak winter in the midwest. Most of the film is in black and white until the final sequence which is of spring scenery in all of its colorful sublimity. I would like to ask for your permission to use this recording of "Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit" in this last sequence if at all possible. You would be credited. My plans are to take the short film to festivals and release it on KZbin. Again, I cannot thank you enough for your fervor and zest for life and music. A handshake in my thoughts, Will Jacobs

Seymour, I just viewed the beautiful and moving film yesterday. Thank you for the pleasure it gave me, and like the other pianist listed below I would dearly love to have the music for the Bach-Friskin transcription so I can play it on my next program. Your performance of it was tender and very moving! May I trouble you for a copy of it? Thank you in advance.

Dear Mr. Bernstein, after watching your film and several interviews, many lessons were learned about life and music. It's so heart warming to hear you talk and lighting up challenges of life. I adore your playing and also your master classes are great and informative to watch! I do play piano my self as well and would love to play more of Bach. Could you give me a hint about how or where to buy your transcription of Bach's "Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit"? I do have the original version, but not your transcription. I hope you can help me :) Many thanks in advance mr Bernstein. With all respect to you!

Dear Mr. Seymour Bernstein I’m not sure that you still check comments here but I’d like to tell you I really want to have the score “Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit” that you played in the Movie. That was so beautiful note that I’ve ever heard. I’m working as a piano tuner in Japan and I’m now dreaming of playing the Bach after I tune the piano to check the difference of their notes. Is that still possible you send your transcription score via email? I’ve been looking for the score and have just found some comments here. So I really hope there is still possibility.. Sincerely, Miho Uchiyama
