SF6 Master Rank Stats! Which Characters are the Most & Least Represented!?

So in a bit of a followup to the general character popularity stats video(linked in the end and in vid description), lets dig deeper into the Master Rank stats! Its the top dog rank in the game, and the numbers don't exactly line up with the overall character popularity, which is very telling on which characters are stronger than the others, or just straight up plain easier to use! JP? Despite being in the bottom half of character popularity he is the single most represented character in Master rank! What does that mean?

Couldn't it also mean that because a character is less popular people are more unfamiliar with the match up. Something that is especially favorable on someone like JP who has a lot of knowledge checks.

You said the opposite for Dhalsim though. Dhalsim also has low representation but a lot of master players but in that case you interpreted it as the few Dhalsim players being very skilled rather than Dhalsim being easy to play. There are signs JP is easy to play (non statistical ones) so it makes sense to a degree but it doesn't seem to be the pure statistics that drive your judgement here

I think the Matser ranks mostly show how fast can you overwhelm the opponent before they figure out how to counter your playstyle. To me that mastery list fits what I've felt in ranked play. Some characters, like Ken and JP, just have more variety of ways to rush down an opponent before they can adapt. Gief is great but he can only come at you in so many ways and can't switch his style up too much, so everyone can use the same tactics to avoid getting beaten.

Also fun to note that Mister Crimson has the highest lp of any player and is the first person to reach 100k lp while playing Dhalsim

I think part of it is match up knowledge. Less played characters present more of an unknown when it comes to frames, proper punishes for you, what they can punish you with.

The Master rank Zangief, Lily, and Dhalsim players are few and far between. I commend the few who can make it as far as they did, as while they can easily break inexperienced players, it's not easy for them to take games off of more skilled players.

Based on the stats listed in the previous video and this one, I've worked out the percentage of players for each character who have made it into master rank so far. The top 5 are: JP - 1.79% Dhalsim - 1.40% Blanka - 1.25% Honda - 1.16% Dee Jay - 1.14% The bottom 5 are: Zangief - 0.29% Ryu - 0.38% Jamie - 0.56% Ken - 0.56% Cammy - 0.59% Of course this data's probably going to shift over time but it's still interesting to think of why the results turn out this way.

What's interesting with Cammy is that she's the most popular at the very bottom and top but gets a lot less popular in the middle. If you cut out Rookie and Bronze she drops to the middle of the pack below masters iirc.

Also respect to Dhalsim players as they may show up in small numbers, but they have the proportionately highest representation in Master Rank, so I think thats a very fun story to tell!

So out of curiosity, I wanted to see what percentage of players for each character managed to reach Master rank with that character, so just a simple #Master/#Total, and this is what I came up with: JP (1.78%) Dhalsim (1.40%) Blanka (1.25%) Honda (1.16%) Dee Jay (1.14%) Juri (1.11%) Kimberly (0.92%) Guile (0.78%) Luke (0.76%) Chun Li (0.72%) Manon (0.64%) Lily (0.63%) Marisa (0.61%) Cammy (0.59%) Ken (0.56%) Jamie (0.56%) Ryu (0.39%) Zangief (0.29%) There's a few things you can takeaway from this is, but the main thing is that Zangief truly is the hardest character to play and needs buffs, so get on that Capcom.

I like the breakdown. So less than 1.5% for each character. I wouldn't call for buffs yet. Way too early. Snake Eyez is washing people with Gief. I know he's a pro, but maybe it ties more skills utilize his tool set. I've played some damn good Giefs at the Diamond level.

Shout-out to Haitani, who has apparently just become the first player to reach Master rank with every character in the game. I think Capcom should recognise this by announcing that Makoto (Haitani's character of choice in SF3 and 4) will be added to the game as the next DLC character!

I think with Deejay, JP, Dhalsim, maybe even Honda to an extent, newer players are less likely to pick those characters. Charge characters and characters who are perceived as difficult to play are usually less popular with newer players. I also think with Ryu being less popular, a lot of high level Ryu players probably switched to Ken or Luke because of the similar playstyle and the general perception that they're stronger characters

Recently someone did a similar comparative analysis of actual "usage" at Master rank. And found a very different tale. That is to say looking at the matches in Masters and who is actually being played. They found that JP, despite having the most Master Ranked players was in 5th. Which means that, seemingly, people got JP to Masters and then stopped playing him. Likely switching to a different character. Or the JP players just play less than the players of other characters(which seems like a weird conclusion, but it's technically a possibility). regardless, You're only likely to fight a JP in about 7.5% of your Master matches, despite him making up over 10% of the number of Master players. Kimberly on flipside was the 3rd most likely to be seen in Masters. Despite being nowhere near 3rd for overall numbers. So maybe people switching TO Kimberly or whatever the reasoning. I just thought that was interesting.

Characters that can move lightning quick and or can fill up the screen with projectiles and other crap being on top, it makes sense to me. Playing Zangief in this game is fun, so even if I get stuck in low ranks I'll be fine with it, as long as I can pretend I'm Itazan or Snake Eyez and pull off some amazing comebacks from time to time!

Theres only 1 modern master player I can think of offhand, they use Marisa. The higher up the ranks you go the less you will see modern.

Personally I really don't like how the game feels on a controller at least on NRS games it can work but I still perfer an arcade stick. This is from the whole 4 Face buttons and 6 inputs issue with controllers. So modern feels way better on a controller to me, I just wish there was a way to have 4 inputs without losing access to parts of a characters kit. Like don't get me wrong I like the option to have one button supers and specials but I'd love to have a hybrid mode that uses 4 inputs but still has you do the motions and input the combos properly instead of holding a trigger. Would be nice for using a controller imo anyways. Edit: I know you can still use the real motions/inputs in modern. I want a mode that forces it. I think it would also be a decent intermediate step for someone trying to switch from modern to classic.

Very few master rank players are going to lose options to do inputs easier. They know how to do inputs, and can read people fast enough to do them in time

Would be interesting to see popularity contrasted with character win rate. Are Master ranked players sleeping on a beast? Are they buying into hype over what looks like a good toolkit on paper? Do our expectations simply align with reality? Not sure we have such data. But that would be an informative route for rooflestatmonger to go should it become available.

I think JP just has a legitimately high skill cap that strong players can make full use of. The difference between one that doesn't even know the difference between his fireballs and one that can convert into a fullscreen lvl 3 off any hit confirm is night and day. However, he also has a lot of tools to cheese it out and you only need to know maybe 3 or 4 combos to be set. The drive rush system is certainly a large part of what keeps him in check, but he's very possible to adapt to and Kimberly/Cammy can wipe the floor with him.

JP has some of the most polarizing matchups. He either wins super hard or loses hard. Only a guess, but I would say part of the reason he's highly represented cause there are more characters he beats than characters who beat him, and it's very, VERY hard for certain characters (Zangief, Marisa) to even touch a JP, let alone win.

I love your videos but the comments about strength and ease to play and win with are a bit contradictory and it's like you're just choosing to say whether a character is seen in master rank because of their strength or how easy they are to play subjectively. You say JP is the most popular master rank character not necessarily because of character strength but because he is easy to win with. But then shortly afterwards you say Dee Jay is higher represented than more popular characters in master rank because of his strength. And then the rest of the video I'm just confused, what is subjective and what isn't anymore?

Easy to win with and being strong is the same thing here. Roof was basically just saying people are sleeping on JP, Deejay is more popular so he's not slept on, he's just doing well as one of the better characters The real contradiction is Dhalsim/JP, both have low popularity but high master representation but in Dhalsims case he said this was a sign of Dhalsim players being very skilled, in JP case he blamed it on the character being strong

To determine that a character is carrying its players to Master you would have to look at the percentage of that individual characters Master players versus a breakdown of representation of that character in other ranks. You cannot just compare percentage of individual character’s Master percentage versus representation within the roster at large.

I achieved master rank with zangief like 3 days ago and I can tell you it was frustrating yet very rewarding, I think gief continues to be the same as the old days, relying on heavy matchup knowledge to win, I can tell for sure the biggest enemy of people trying to rank up with these characters is accusing others of being "carried", youre using these characters for a reason and you must take that responsibility and the consequences behind it.

This is a very good thing, all characters are damn near equally represented. I think a lot of this has to do with the drive system, it really makes a lot of match ups manageable and allows players to play who they want without sacrificing a lot

Can you make a video listing the percentage of players who are in Master for each character? So, 24% or Dhalsims are in Master, and only 8% of Zangiefs, or whatever.

Character types should also be considered in this conversation. For example newer players will not enjoy charge characters due to not only having to learn the game but also learning the charge mechanic. Another good example is new players and veterans tend to not enjoy Rekka characters. Jamie being a Rekka character will immediately turn people away due to the high skill ceiling it takes to get good with Rekka characters.

I think there are different ways to look at this chart: JP is the top of Masters due to be OP? Maybe, or maybe is a character that appeals more to highly competitive players due to his complexity over characters like Ken and Ryu. Same for a character like Dhalsim. Not many people would approach Dhalsim casually, but those who play him are usually hard core, long time Dhalsim appreciators! There are different angles to look at this :) Also, I'd be super interested to see the regional charts for this!

JP SWEEP. I all seriousness I fully expected JP to be the number 1 on this list. Playing on ranked I normaly placed in Gold but with JP i got carried to Platinum and thats because people have no idea how to deal with him, in fact now that I look at the rest of the stats I say the majority of character at the top are the ones that either are all arround strong (Ken, Luke, Juri..) or that are super confusing to deal with (Deejay, Marisa, JP...) . Makes sense it has only been a month roughly.

i've been saying from the start that theres no way dhalsim is a bad character, just that it takes a certain type of player to play him effectively. Most likely the majority of sim players have been sim players for a very long time through many different iterations of street fighter and are married to the character. You can't teach the type of fundamentals those players have developed, that only comes with lots of experience. So for those players all they really had to do was learn and apply SF6's mechanics to the character and then they were off to the races.

I think that the over represented characters in master rank could point to a few things. For newer characters, like JP, they probably highlight how low their skill floor is, combined with people not knowing the counter play for them yet. The game is still not even a month old. Ken, Cammy, and juri are hugely popular legacy characters so their placements make sense here. It's just a numbers game, and those characters are pretty strong too. I didn't play much DJ in 4, but from what I can tell, he's a very different character in SF 6. So, he is somewhere between someone with legacy strength like Ken and Cammy but also has a boost like JP from him being, effectively, a new character which folks need to learn how to counterplay. I know I struggle against him!

To play devil's advocate, sometimes it's not just about the numbers, but how those numbers are achieved. Losing against JP may simply be less fun or more annoying than losing against others. Similar to how grapplers get so much hate. As just a viewer, I certainly root against JP every single time I see him in any tournament. I just find him boring AF to watch compared to others.

i dont know about dee jay being top tier. he is easy to win with, like JP, but thats because just like JP, he is not as popular and people dont lab the matchup as much. that being said, maybe he is top tier, but a lot of djs being in master doesnt mean its true 100%. it is some evidence, but its not all that there is to it. one tip about battling dj, he has a lot of normals that are not special cancelable. that means that he is very suceptible to being drive impacted!

JP makes sense to have that many in masters since he is a perfect example of a knowledge check character. You can do well against him with most of the cast, but you have to know all the tricks and how to bypass them or else you will get smashed. In ranks below diamond however noone is going to lab against him so he gets away with murder online.

As a master sim all i will say is you got it 100% backwards. He is not half as strong as he was in 5 and now add all the new rushdown heavy mechanics sf6 has. Not going to keep playing him so thats not me protecting my main since he isnt my main.

Because it doesn't consider the decision making process of the player based purely on his personal taste and style in regards to visuals, presentation and playstyle of a character, rather than how strong/weak the character is. So some characters might be not played a lot in general, cause they are not fitting to a lot of people just because of its presentation. Dan and Fang are bad examples, since they also were weak, but I am pretty sure that also a lot of people didn't identify with their style of presentation. And other than that some characters are just a lot more popular to be played regardless of their strenght, like Ken and Ryu, because they are the main protagonists.
