I'm Japanese and I'm going through a translator, so you might not get the message. Fuji is the name of the flower. The language of flowers is "kindness", "welcome", "good guest", "harmony between man and woman", "elegance", "never leave", "fidelity", "fertility", "drunk in love" and "bliss". She was a woman who lived up to her name.

I always found her the most deepest of characters and would have liked the series to have given her more time. I can't quite explain it, but there's something about Fuji that is so attractive. I find Mariko interesting because of her story, and because Mariko is a key character in the entire plot. We get to know about Mariko because of the plot, and are attacted to her as a result of it. But Fuji is different. She started off as this tragic character, then surpises everyone with her defiance and courage, while mantaining absolute elegance in everything she does. I love Fuji's mannerism, the way she carries herself, and the way she speaks. Fuji is such an elegant character. Moeka Hoshi is amazing for portraying the character so effortlessly. I don't watch Jidaigeki so I can't really compare Moeka Hoshi's acting with other more accomplished Japanese actresses, but I imagine Fuji/Moeka Hoshi is going to pop up in my mind whenever I watch a show portraying feudal Japanese women in the future.

I believe she was patterned after a real life counterpart of a widow who became a nun of high ranking in the Tokugawa shogunate, Kodai-in She didn't have any sons or husband and her late husband's sword was given to the second shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, which closely resembles how Torinaga got Fuji's sword.
