I crewed that helicopter on that take off. That was a brand new CH-53E 165345 prior to its delivery. The pilots were a combined crew of a Sikorsky pilot and a DCMA pilot. The aircraft was production ready with new engines rated nominally at 4380 SHP / engine. The caption states a shitter takeoff. True 53 people would know that this is a super shitter, not a shitter.

CH53e can easily achieve over 200knots straight and level flight. When I crewed them from 89-94 NATOPS limited us to 180knots. We broke rules often, its truely one of the greatest helicopters produced.

They are HUGE! One of the coolest things I've gotten to do is sit in the troop compartment of a -53, while it was IN the belly of a C-5. Pretty amazing seeing these things taken apart and folded up like a madman's erector set.

Working at Sikorsky as a contractor we'd ocasionally sneak outside to watch these incredible aircraft, you'd get used to the Black Hawks but never so with the Super Stallions, that unique tone mixed with the ground shaking is pretty awesome

The HH-53 has held the title of the fastest heavy lift chopper since the 1960s. Ah-64 can be field modified to carry an external Uh-60 fuel tank, but bombs....only Russian attack helos (the Hind) are only helicopters to carry bombs operationally.

The pilot is Frank Tefft, the Sikorsky Chief Project Pilot on the CH-53E and a fine TP and engineer. He flew its first flight, and lead the development program and service introduction.
@robertwilcox8572 Жыл бұрын
Nick, as good as Frank was, and as many times as he flew takeoffs like this, this one wasn't one of his. This one was specifically set up by the company, and was filmed by the company photographer. All of us were out on the flight line to watch this, because, as you know, official sanction of hot flying took an act of congress. Tony Stobiecki flew that takeoff.

@Chrisskateboarding actually, Blackout was a MH-53J Pave Low (also used in COD), but this a CH-53E Super Stallion. The Pave Low was formerly used by the Air Force and the Super Stallion is currently used by the Marines. The most notable difference being that the CH-53E has 3 engines where the MH-53J had 2, in addition to many equipment and tech differences.

Jolly Greens were also HH-3 Seakings used by the airforce in Vietnam. The CH-53 was referred to as the Super Jolly Green Giant when used in the same role.

I posted this year's ago and was just checking the comments today for no reason. Thats cool that your old man was in the jump seat for that takeoff. I flew these birds for over 10 years, and can say that that was an *aggresive* takeoff I think a guy named Stobiecki was at the controls. Not sure. Take care

I retired from Sikorsky Aircraft 31 March 2023 after 41 years in the Sikorsky Flight Hangar in Stratford. I was there the day they did this. It was officially sanctioned, and filmed by the company photographer. The aircraft took off on runway 21, and the photographer had set up on the reciprocal number 3 at the other end of the runway. We used to call this the "100 knots before the fence" takeoff, the idea being that, when the aircraft passed the photographer, it would be doing at least 100 knots. We have always had great pilots, and one of the best in that day was at the controls. Tony Stobiecki did this takeoff as good as it can be done.

@BIILYBOB999 common misconception snubb, it is tilted primarily to help give the helicopter a nicer attitude at hover. helis tend to get pushed one direction or the other by the tail rotor due to the lift(horizontally) it creates, the pilot has to correct this by angling the whole helicopter to counter the tail rotors lift. by tilting the tail rotor into the down wash of the main blades, it still does its job, while allowing the heli to sit much more level. it would create 3% of the lift at best

@edcoondog straight from the NATOPS manual, esentially the operators manual if you will, the 53E hovers at about 5 degrees left wing up and 8 degrees nose up, the tilted T/R has less side force vector then a normally vertical one, also it does generate a nominal amount of lift to help with the nose up attitude but NATOPS says its less then 5% of the total lift the heli generates. close friend of mine is a 53 mech, he is with the squadron that is currently testing new models equipment on the 53E

@Kulkulcan88: They have to tilt the nose forward in order to get forward thrust. As they get airspeed, they get some lift from the air moving over and under the rotor disk. It works a lot better than it looks.

As for the crew being thrown forward...not if the pilots were doing it right. I always tell my students any idiot can push this machine to and beyond its limits, but a smooth pilot can do it with the crew in back not falling over....but a smart pilot knows there isn't really a point other than S&G's. After long enough simply going home at night and having a beer is exciting enough for me. NATOPS limits are plenty enough to have fun if that's what you're looking for....

Maybe, but I've personally heard retired colonels call them shitters at our Birthday Ball, so they're shitters where I'm concerned. And the stuff inside the cabin is much worse than what's outside, if you ask me. Outside you just get POLs running down the side. Inside is much worse, because it all mixes together, and let me tell you, the mixture of hydraulic fluid, engine oil, gearbox oil, water, JP-5, soot, sand, dirt and other crap is truly nasty.
