My dad's 2006 Tundra just rolled over a million miles. Original engine and transmission....it still drives like it's new. No noise but the seats are worn so we need to reupholster the seats. The reverse shift went awry at 750k mi but worked itself back after we replaced the ATF (not flushed just drain and refill). CEL came on at 500k mi. We bought a bypass kit for $100 and light never cane back on. However if we live in a state with annual inspection, it'll never pass emissions test. But hey we drove it for another 500k mi and with no major issues.

I'm on my 2nd Silverado and have enjoyed them. However, the new models with the auto start/stop and cylinder deactivation down to 2 cylinders stink. Another thing about the Silverado, although I haven't experienced it, is the rear-end. The owner and chief tech of an axle-repair shop near me says the rear-end of the Silverado's is prone to failures due to the design. He can almost guarantee that you will have a problem with it sooner than later.

Great inside knowledge, thanks. Interesting use of the word domestic since both the Tundra (Texas) and Titan (Mississippi) are American made. Domestic now means the where the company is headquarter or where it was started.

@coreyshumate671413 күн бұрын
I'd be interested in the stats. Of course you're going to see more F150s when they make up so much of the market. They sell 6-7x more F150s than Tundras and well over 37x more than Titans, so of course you're going to see more of them in the shop.
@MHobbs064 ай бұрын
The only issue with a used Tundra is that you are looking at paying $30K+ for one without a 100K+ miles on it and in decent shape. Closer to $40K if it’s newer with low mileage. Obviously the older/higher mileage trucks will be cheaper. That’s why I’m considering just opting for a 3/4 gasser. Mainly just for pulling our travel trailer. My Tacoma ain’t cutting it ha.

2017 4Runner 106k. Bought it brand new, best vehicle I've ever owned. Finally, after getting the transmission fluid and filter changed, they noticed a cracked strut, so that's the first money I've had to put into it besides brakes and oil changes. i asked the guy at the trans. shop if I bought a new truck what would he recommend and he said, good luck, they all have problems.

At 7:28 - would a Ford F-150 move up substantially if it does not use an ecoboost (turbo) engine? I only ask because I'm looking at a 2002 F150 with 4.6 V8 SOHC with 240k miles. My other family cars are Toyota and Honda and I only buy non turbo.

Ive been a Toyota fan for the most part of my adult life. I own the last model year of the 5.7 and have put 80k miles and nothing has been done to it besides a battery change and oil changes every 10k miles. Now that Toyota has gone to a twin turbo 6 cylinder, i will probably be looking at other manufacturers if i one day get another truck. If the Coyote V8’s are still around that will be my next purchase.

Your opinion mirrors the 2 independent mechanics in my area. Back in 2020 decided to replace my 2007 Tundra. Looked pretty hard at the domestics but both warned me if you want long term reliability ya better stay with the Tundra. End up getting another Tundra. They’re definitely lacking when it comes to overall ride quality and the recent redesign who knows what to expect for reliability? Doesn’t look very good so far but I’m guessing Toyota will remedy it at least to a degree.

I have a 2014 F150 Lariat that I bought with 74K on it. 4X4 of course. I’ve had a few minor issues with it that were fixed under warranty (seals leaking, backup camera went out, and the heater motor is going which seems to be a Ford thing and isn’t difficult or expensive to fix myself). However, when I went looking for an F150 the Ecoturd motor was an automatic non-starter. I went looking for the 4.0 Coyote motor specifically for the longevity. Just had the 100K service done on it and I’ll drive it until it falls apart hopefully at 300K plus. Little things aside it’s a great truck that I fully trust. Every individual vehicle will have it’s own unique issues but based on what I’ve seen with myself and my parent’s Dodge vehicles, I wouldn’t buy a dodge for $1.

Great information. Since your ranking is done by what you see coming into the shop, I wonder how or if the ranking would change based on the number of vehicles on the road. i.e. There's more Fords on the road, you're going to see more fords in the shop, etc.
@David21-h8b28 күн бұрын
He only mentioned the ford ecoboost. He forgot to mention that ford has a V8 option that is almost as reliable as Toyotas. Know a couple people with over 300,000 miles on their V8 F-150s.
@shawnsnow6413Ай бұрын
It's my understanding that Ford has fixed most of the EcoBoost issues on newer models. I also hear a lot of contractors saying they're getting 300k plus on theirs. I haven't done a lot of research but I'm pretty sure you'll never hear that about a Dodge. My brother had to replace both camshafts and lifters at 105k

6-liter GM V8 engine is solid - no fuel management cylinder deactivation feature. Nissan is in bad financial shape - discontinued Titan. Must change fluids on modern vehicles to make them last. If you live in winter salt belt - annual Fluid Film application! Toyota has engine problems with new Tundras with V6 turbo engines.

How do you approach taking a seller's car to your mechanic to have it checked out? It seems like getting them to agree to this in the modern day is rare. I've only brought this up once or twice with sellers, but it was a hard no.
