Superb work Shad. No doubt you'll be pulling it in no time. The newness of a fresh bow certainly makes a difference. And just for the record, I weighted it at 124lb @ 30". For those watching who don't do archery, that's equivalent to a small person that Shad is lifting, with three fingers.

About lifting a small person with three fingers- I took up rock climbing to get over a fear of heights. More than once I found myself lifting all 150# of *me* with three fingers. I'm not positive that would be a reasonable training exercise for Shad, nor how far he'd have to travel to find good rocks to climb, but depending on his own weight he could try doing one-handed pull-ups.

One of my favorite fun facts about medieval archers is they can tell who were the archers at battle grave sites. This is due to greater bone density in the arms and upper chest because of just how heavily muscled they were from years of training with heavy longbows. That's one thing I dislike about RPGs making longbows a dexterity based weapon when you need to be relatively strong to simply use it effectively.

@alexanderflack5664 жыл бұрын
The problem is that strength does an equally terrible job at predicting archery performance. Strength, in DnD or RPG terms, is associated with general strength, whereas archery requires strength in muscles that aren't used for a lot of other things. Being able to shoot a heavy bow comes from proper technique and a lot of practice; going to the gym and doing a typical weight training regimen will do very little to help you pull a heavier bow. I've seen someone who is obviously stronger than I am struggle with a 55# bow after only a few shots, while I'd been shooting my 78# Hun for a few hundred arrows straight with no breaks and hadn't started shaking at all yet. Even so, I'm certain that if I'd arm wrestled him (or competed against him lifting, or some other test of strength), I'd have lost badly. Basically, if they wanted to make archery in RPGs realistic, it would be neither strength nor dexterity, but how much you practice archery. Hulking brutes who mostly use their halberds or greatswords and only pull out a bow when they have no other choice (and almost never practice with it) are not going to perform as well as the comparatively thin adventurer who practices and uses a bow constantly.

D&D 3.5 handles composite bows like this a bit better. They use dexterity for attack rolls, since that and any feat/class bonuses determine if you hit for ranged weapons. But they have varying strength ratings(draw weight), which your character needs to meet to not take an attack penalty. At the same time higher strength bows allow you to add more of your strength modifier to your damage roll. Meaning to get the most out of composite bows in D&D, you need a combination of strength, feats(skill), and dexterity.

Another reason to use sapwood bellies if the mechanical benefit is negligible is because it isn't good for anything else. If you don't use the sapwood you need to grow your yew larger to get the same number of bows from your yew tree.
@alexanderflack5664 жыл бұрын
The sapwood was the back, not the belly, but regardless, that isn't the case. They were perfectly willing to cut away and discard a lot of heartwood in order to have that sapwood backing, even in cases when the tree was big enough that they easily could have done away with the sapwood and made the same number of bows from it.

I think another reason for using half sap wood and heart wood from yew is that you don't have as much waste as when you only use heart wood. Yew has very narrow sap wood (sometimes half inch). So this thickness fits well for a bow. Furthermore the bigger yew trees I saw were mostly unevenly grown or twisted. The people who rag on Shad about shooting style and if it's 'proper' or not are missing one big point: There probably is no single 'proper' way people shot bows throughout history. Just look at handgun shooting and the various stances and methods for that. It's changed drastically through the centuries of shooting, and even from decade to decade. There's always some new 'mega super tactical' way to shoot a handgun. I'm certain shooting bows was no different in their own time. One person shot a bow one way, another shot a bow another way, both thought their way was 'best' or at least best for them. Maybe some would have been better shots if they shot another way. Maybe they wouldn't have been. Either way, I guarantee you if you went back in time and asked 10 different archers what the 'proper' way of shooting was you'd get 11 different answers. It's no different today with handguns. The important thing is you cover the basics: Don't get slide bite, hit your target, don't hit what you don't want to kill, and preferably don't get hit yourself if you're being shot at in return. Some methods may be more efficient at achieving this than others, and some might be better for different people. Three of those pretty much seem to apply to archery too. Hit your target, don't hit what you don't want to kill, don't get shot back. I guess the slide bite you could replace with don't slap yourself with the bowstring. If it works, it works. I doubt in the Medieval world that an archer would care much if he's using the 'proper' stance so long as he's hitting his target and not getting hit by his own bowstring. Sidenote, I wonder if there were any treatises written back and forth by two master archers talking crap about each other's shooting methods and trying to convince everyone else they were the one doing it 'the right way.'

There’s a huge number of ways you can do the task, but there’s way lower variety of ways to do the task _efficiently_. Hence, organized training, where people spend half their life practicing and another half helping other people to practice, tends to slip down to just a handful of methods, with ever decreasing number of differences in it. So yes, for a non-specialist it will result in a single “proper” way of doing things - because basic things will be pretty much the same. Not hitting your arm with a string involves some very specific adjustments, not always clear for self-learners. “Hit your target” is a huge set of various technical aspects including the posture, draw, anchoring, aiming, release - by far not the basic. Most of those things are not obvious for novices. Many of those things remain poorly cleared in self-learners. “Proper” thing is a thing that works the best among available. The “killer feature“ of the “right side Mediterranean draw” is the _speed_. It isn’t more accurate, it isn’t less tiring, it gives you no additional draw length. It is only about a perceived speed of nocking the arrow. But we’ve seen multiple examples of people shooting from the left side faster, including shooting heavier bows - meaning the only benefit of the “Shad method” is questionable. At the same time it involves funny things like moving your thumb up (inevitably putting more tension into your left hand and contacting the arrow more) and tilting the bow left (while even those “proper” styles that really shoot from the right side tilt right - because it’s a natural way to put the top limb out of the sight line). Those funny things make this style harder without obvious benefits. So the question arises - why would anyone with access to information on different draw styles choose it? Shad is obviously proud of his “impossible invention” (which is not impossible - it’s simply inefficient), but why other people would do it on a large scale? About your side note - check “Arab archery”, it will give you a good impression of how much variety archery had in the region, and involves multiple styles from multiple masters. Those differences are discussed in a very detailed way - and are surprisingly small. Same as modern handgun shooting doesn’t involve shooting with your leg, or reloading with your teeth as a seriously discussed technique, there will be no visible difference for an amateur. And, of course, a mandatory picture with accurately depicted fingers and a historically accurate bow with a professional archer posing :) qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-c366ed32ab76597908191ab63aa10817

There are proper ways to shoot in a sense of range safety. If he lets go of that arrow during his tremendous sky draw, he might murder someone 1km downrange of him. Also there's the risk of him hurting himself.
@alexanderflack5664 жыл бұрын
First of all, that's a terrible comparison. If your skeleton isn't in proper alignment with a pistol, you don't handle the recoil as well, but suffer no injury for it. If you're not using proper alignment with a heavy bow, you get a torn rotator cuff or lateral epicondylitis. And Shad, for all of his insistence that he's still in proper shoulder alignment (not that we can actually tell given his insistence on wearing armor every time he shoots on camera), is not in proper alignment with his torso (which changes how much of the load his core muscles can take up, which is a minor problem) or his bow side elbow rotation (which actually is a serious problem, and he's risking injury rotating it backward like that). That's not to say that he'll definitely be injured, but it's much more risky than proper form and gives no actual benefit.

@koendejong12944 жыл бұрын
It is a durabilty thing, but maybe not the only reason. Making a bow of different kinds of wood does affect how long and how it can be used. If you use the "wrong" type of wood you have to be careful the back of the bow doesnt crack and the belly doesnt get compression spots wich weaken and eventualy might break the bow. I honestly struggle to believe that some people still argue about "correct" side of the bow to place arrow on. Didn't japanese warriors place the arrow explicitly on the outside? Japanese art of shooting a bow is well documented, preserved and still practised to this day, even as family traditions. Of course, Japanese bows were diffrent (upper limb was neatly twice as long as the other one), but still, if it wasn't a viable method to shoot, it wouldn't remain so well preserved. I saw a documentary about it long time ago, so I don't remember any of the names or details, but I'm fairly sure this was a thing, and results were comparable to european longbow with inside placed arrow. So, there is a whole culture that has arrow place on the outside as the correct way, even going as far as having a defined philosophy of using a bow.

i guess internet people don't realize how diverse culture was before globalization. We might all be ascended from the same people but over thousands of years we grew apart and have different languages even. Different ways of cooking every new plant that is grown and seemingly different styles of crafting and using bows.

It's the superiority paradox. Once you have so much time invested mastering a skill and gaining social status because of it the human ego doesn't want to accept a loss in status through the intervention of new information. It happens in religion, martial arts, sports, science, education, politics. It's the human condition. Deep down we're all just cry babies of a sort.

Unlike many still think, the people from the past were not ignoramus idiots. They had great engineering and craftsmanship, besides producing great art. Bows are just another example of that. Incidentally, for me, at least, they're both great craftsmanship and great art, unlike contemporary weapons, which are all business and no poetry.
@alexanderflack5664 жыл бұрын
Eh, English longbows were all business and no poetry. They typically didn't have grips or decorations, beyond the horn nocks (which served to prevent the string from biting into the fairly soft yew) and the maker's mark (which served as a marker to indicate where the arrow should pass, so you can put your hand in a consistent place relative to the nocking point on the string). If you want art, look at composite bows: www.manchuarchery.org/content/qing-dynasty-precious-bow mandarinmansion.com/item/very-fine-ottoman-bow i.pinimg.com/originals/e3/7f/e3/e37fe311f93c83eb2bda470d2389b574.jpg And modern reproductions: salukibow.com/index.php/horn-bows/ www.grozerarchery.com/htm/szkita/e3/j/6b.htm www.grozerarchery.com/htm/torok/ex3/j/7.htm www.grozerarchery.com/htm/torok/ex3/j/6.htm www.grozerarchery.com/htm/torok/bio/j/8.htm www.grozerarchery.com/htm/indo/trh2/j/6.htm www.grozerarchery.com/htm/torok/biom/j/6.htm

People in the old times had less access to education and resources, but thats basicaly it. The people who were educated on the subjects would of been as smart (possibly smarter in the case of archery as archery is much more prevalent in that time) they werent dumb they werent idiots, they just had less easy access to the knowledge required.

As far as I've seen its the modern archery community that is still being argumentative about this archery styles validity. But its seems the war bow and general historical enthusiast communities (including actual historians) feel that its completely valid and want to engage with its potential merits. Its almost like modern archers feel like this invalidates their interest, when in reality its a separate thing altogether. Just let both things exist side by side.
@TheKamiBunny4 жыл бұрын
I think in archery its whatever works. It doesn't matter about style or technique as long as it works and you can hit a target. That said though, the thumb support for the arrow is risky where the fetching can cut your thumb if it's going fast enough.
@RainMakeR_Workshop4 жыл бұрын
@@TheKamiBunny Well, yes and no. Technique still matters. Just more than one technique can work. But bad technique can still cause severe injury. Even in this vid Shad talks about shoulder rotation, which seems to be something you should never do, no matter what style of archery you're doing.
@alexanderflack5664 жыл бұрын
I shoot exclusively English and asiatic warbows, and my criticism of what he's doing isn't anything about invalidating interest, it's about improper elbow rotation on the string side. Partial rotation forward is preferred because of the way the load sits on the bones in the forearm and on the elbow and wrist joints; backwards rotation, as he does, risks injury. I also take issue with his claim that the fact that it hasn't injured him yet is at all meaningful, since there have been examples of people doing improper draw and feeling comfortable with it for nearly five years before the injuries manifested. I'm not saying he will absolutely injure himself, but he is taking a risk doing so, and encouraging others to do the same (as well as moving up in draw weight too quickly; the muscles build more quickly than the other soft tissues, so jumping up quickly can cause injury even on a bow you are capable of drawing without too much difficulty).
@alexanderflack5664 жыл бұрын
@@TheKamiBunny Not worried about fletchings biting the thumb (under normal conditions, they're going to be going over the knuckle instead after all). My concern is that elbow, and he puts so much emphasis on shoulder alignment (which still might be wrong in a way completely unrelated to his arrow inside vs outside debate, although it's impossible to see clearly when he has a gambeson on) but completely ignores proper elbow rotation.
@RainMakeR_Workshop4 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderflack566 And you have zero evidence that any of your claims have any validity in this style. As he has demonstrated over and over and over. Your speaking from experience in a completely different style. Its like Football (Soccer) player, telling a Rugby player how to kick a ball. They are similar in many ways but fundamentally different. Experience in one does not translate to the other. I would consider the expertise on a doctor or physiotherapist who specialises in sports related injury treatment and prevention. But they would have to be a neutral party who is there to look into its risks and merits.
