It's crazy to think that when I first saw Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 my friends and I were literally FREAKING out at how amazing the graphics were. Here we are in 2018 experiencing what we currently think are outstanding graphics that seem like they can't get much better... Ralph Bassim Graphics isn't just about resolution. I'd argue the biggest difference today from 10 years ago is in lighting and shaders.

Graphics are reaching a peak. It's more to do with textures, lighting and art design now. Every since PS3 games have been more or less the same. The generational jumps are going to get smaller and smaller now. So happy I got to live through those earlier years when a new console was a truly groundbreaking shift in graphics and capabilities.

Ralph Bassim , Kevtb87 I can agree that graphics are currently jaw dropping at certain moments. I do however stand my ground with what I said. They will still greatly surpass modern technology, when I say this I mean full in-game engine. Look at high budget CG cutscenes like the Witcher and anything by Blizzard. I'm sure actual gameplay will reach that point eventually. Look at early PS3 games vs late PS3 games (Uncharted 1 vs Uncharted 3 is a good example). The same applies to PS4 games from 2013-2018. In 10 years I'm fairly positive that the PS5 or PS6 will be pushing some unimaginable content. :)

Radhe B Krisnanda Performance mode will prioritise frame rate (eg boost from 30fps to 60fps) but the game will look ‘worse’ - whereas cinematic will boost graphics but keep performance more down.

In theory, it would be personal preference. Some people would be cool with sacrificing better anti-aliasing, advanced lighting FX, and texture filtering for 60 fps. Others would prefer a fuller visual experience at 30 fps--especially in less twitchy games. In practice, the "performance" modes in games aren't hitting 60 fps and instead often give the player an uncapped frame rate that will vary between 40 and 55 fps leading to noticeable judder. Meanwhile resolution modes have a lower frame rate (sometimes just above/below 30), but are often more stable. (I have a PS4 Pro and an Xbox One X. So, I have an unhealthy obsession with these things.)

Honestly when I saw the first trailer of the PS4 version I didn't think much of it. My mind was playing tricks on me, because when I first saw the PS2 version, my eyes saw it as we see the PS4 version now: incredibly beautiful. I see what you mean, it's called *lightbloom* and it's a hardware effect that was handled by the PS2 and that has every modern emulator on its knees. I think this effect alone just took away 10 fps on the ps2

The game's graphics definitely look amazing. But the PS2 version has a certain charm to it in terms of lighting and aesthetic. I will buy this game. But from what I've seen, I think I'm always gonna prefer the original. And I'm not saying the original looks better in terms of visual fidelity or anything like that. I just think PS2 version looks better IN IT'S OWN WAY. And I don't think its nostalgia because I played through the PS2 version a year before they announced the PS4 version. However, I won't make any for-sure statements until I play the remastered version.

Yeah, I think I may end up agreeing. Though the PS2 version felt like it was too ambitious for the hardware, that limitation lent it a distinctly barren identity that the gorgeous looking remake may inevitably negate. The fact that the PS3 version was essentially an up rezzed rerelease makes it better than the blurry original in my book, without fundamentally altering the vibe. Still, I probably have to get this and see for myself.

You will be able to play it with a similar look if you want. Considering the track record of PS games with HDR support you will more than likely have full exposure control over the HDR component and the tone mapping for non-HDR screens. Play this game in a non-hdr monitor with the exposure opened and you will be able to play with an overexposed skies. After all the glow in the original was trying to simulate camera exposure effects at the time.

Just to clarify, the PS2 game has progressive scan and 16:9 options, which they ignored in this comparison (and they make a pretty big difference, and it's pretty sick for a PS2 game). Not including these options in this comparison is purposefully making the game look worse.

Wander's face looks too weird for me in the new version. I mean, the rest looks amazing (scenery, physics, bumpmap, lighting), but I can't get over how much he looks like a doll in the remake. While the remake looks incredible I played the HD collection last year & it still looks good to me considering it's 13yrs old now, what they could do on a ps2 was amazing, the open world art design & no loading times. The ps2's aesthetics was not because it was meant to be styled that way but because of the limitations of the console. If it were made today, it would 100% look the way the remake looks(except for the characters faces which is more on Bluepont's skills in character modeling). The remake still has that exaggerated bloom but it will only be more apparent in areas that actually has strong lighting in it. The original did not have any dynamic lighting or any kind of shadowing that would cover light rays from affecting areas and that pretty much caused the bloom to go everywhere.

This game is just something else. I played it on the PS2 but never finished it as I found the controls a little difficult. I managed to finish this though on my PS4 Pro and what an intense experience. Probably my favourite game ever. I have a question though to anyone else using an HDR compatible TV. Do you find in HDR mode, the picture looks worse? I also found this with The Last Guardian. It just looks a bit more washed out. All my other games in HDR mode look better for it but not these 2 games. I'm wondering if its just me.

I mean, to be fair, the fact that the PS2 version is able to run as well as it did, while still looking as good as it does on that hardware is a small miracle. It is a more technically impressive version, because of the technical limitations of the time. I feel the same way about the Crash Trilogy remake that came out last year.

Rico Uk the "water color" is actually just the haze the ps2 would make when it was rendering far away objects. It's an open world, SotC was so far ahead of it's time on a technical level it's crazy.

Well, at the time they were doing with Shadow on PS2 things the PS2 hardware was not built to do, so it was impressive. None of what the PS4 version is doing is new, from a technical point of view, or pushes the hardware to its limits. And that is not a dig to what Bluepoint has done here, which is simply terrific. It is just a reality of how much game consoles and game engines have advanced in the same span of time since the first game came out.

I think the only little detail missing is the amount of fog that gave the ps2 version that sense of a dream type of land, like something mysterious, deep and cold making everything look a little bigger for our eyes. But the rest is sooo damn good, can't wait to play this masterpiece!

Cinematic Mode doesn't improve the image quality enough to overcome the jarring frame rate decrease, in my opinion. I would rather stick with Performance Mode.

Really great choice of examples to show clear and obvious scene differences. This really highlights how while the PS4 version looks great, it completely changes the aesthetics and cinematography for the worse. Turns out having ultra hi-res textures, a high frame rate, and everything in perfect focus doesn't help when you don't capture the artistry.

The visual difference is outstanding. I just hope they also did a good remaster of the audio. For what I heard in the gameplay video, the music sounds compressed as hell. I hope is just KZbin ruining it. I don't want it to be like with Skyrim Special Edition, were they upgraded the graphics but ended up downgrading the audio.

Eh, for a game like this where input delay isn't really all that important I'd probably go with cinematic. This is honestly more of an experience than it is a video game, if that makes any sense. But for fighters and shooters yeah performance all the way.

It's because you probably played it on a CRT TV. PS2 games were designed with CRT in mind, it looks terrible on anything other than crt. (Unless you run this game on a PS2 emulator on PC and upsacle the resolution)

The only difference between the ps2 and ps3 versions of Shadow is rendering resolution, which if I remember correctly ran at 720p or a higher than 720p mode that you could force by unchecking the 720p box on ps3, but that mode would have impacted performance. Regardless, it's all the same assets. Also, it's more interesting to see the very first original version compared to the new remake. You're seeing 2 generations of graphical fidelity and rendering resolution, which really serves as a marker of how far game technology has come in only the 13 years since the game's original release

Maybe because the PS2 version is the one that originated this, the original source, which the PS3 version did not. Why would you want to compare it against a version that a), was not the original, b), was just a remaster and not a remake, and c), is not the one you will be playing on a PS4?

I imagine cinematic has higher resolution but worse framerate, while performance has a lower resolution but a more stable framerate. That's how it was with Nioh, anyways.
