Check throttle cable inner core to outer jacket tension. If you find that the throttle cable is a bit loose than the engine rpm can typically slowly steadilly fall. They make a special Morse clamp to tighten down the tension just right. However when it happened to me I just used a pair of visegrips on the outer jacket. Worked perfect. Also saw one boat use a rubber door wedge against the compass and throttle lever to keep it in position.

You guys are so inspirational I've been watching a lot lately because I'm getting ready to start work on my boat I got last year and had it put on the hard so I can figure out what's what and how it works but I ha e a couple leaky windows and some carpet to replace I hit hard times so I sold the motor and outdrive but I figured I could just replace them with newer and better equipment my dad gave me his old furno open radar and his dingy hopping he has me fix that patch in his driveway replaced this yr because he has a extra outboard motor for the dingy and some teak he took outta his boat so I can make myself a new table but when I finally get to the water I can meet you all in the big blue

We had the Yanmar in our last boat, a Jeanneau SunDance 36 it's a great little engine. We now have a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey with a Yanmar engine 88hp also. We also have the engine backing off issue on our new (to us) boat on our shake down sail from Lefkada, Greece to Montenegro and then Croatia and back to Greece. We found it to be the throttle lever in the cockpit. We jammed a piece or rubber in it for now and it holds revs fine. When we are back in Greece we will take it apart and there is a screw at the back of the handle you can tension to make the handle a little stiffer. We don't want to take it apart in Croatia as some screws look corroded and we do not know where to get a new lever from here if it breaks. Happy sailing on your new boat. WHUATI crew. Family of 3 living onboard.

No one deserves to be sailing a nice boat more than you two. I can see how much you enjoy it. Congratulations on the boat. It's a nice one. And the Yanmar 3GM30 is a great motor! I would suggest 12 ounces of marvel mystery oil in the fuel and a bit in the oil won't hurt either. Before that, Drain old fuel all the way out and wipe your fuel tank down and clean your Raycor water seperator. Replace fuel filter.

Thank you David! We are liking the freedom a lot so far, lots to look forward to making her our own. We'll check out that mystery oil stuff, I'm unfamiliar, only ever really put additives in the outboard and still then did not have much success.

Wicked Salty Wes It is a penetrant that will help free up the rings in older diesel motors. When the engine heats up the rings start binding in the piston, usually due to a build-up of either combustion products or a breakdown of the lubricating oil its a common cause of failure. When it gets hot it will lose power, smoke or slow down...it worked for my 2qm20 that wouldn't even turn over. I filled the engine with MMO and let it soak for 30 days and used the hand crank every day to try to turn it over. One day it broke free. When I finally started it the cast iron mixing elbow exploded but the motor ran like a champ and ran for three years afterward without ever having a problem..

We have the same motor, and we also been fixing up our new old boat for the last few months. I've been checking my belts often and the raw water pump belt has needed adjustment a few times. I think it's because the engine sat so long that a small film of rust on the pulley is wearing them quickly for the first little bit. I could be wrong, but that's what it seems like. As for the engine RPM someone installed a little clamp mid throttle cable on ours and it holds pressure and resistance so that the cable wont slip back. Ours was too hard to move so I loosened the clamp too much and the throttle would fall off like you are saying. Hope that helps. Really liking your new VLOG style guys. Also glad to see someone else struggling with new boat issues like we are. Sailing can be exhausting some times eh.
@woodside63
@woodside63 7 жыл бұрын
The water pump belt doesn't need to be as tight as the alternator belt. Try turning the water pump pulley by hand without the belt on it to get a sense of the needed force to operate it. I have been told that the belt should not be too tight, as that can cause early failure of the seals in the pump, especially if the engine sits that way for long periods.

I was watching SV Nanji's site and they had your problem with RPM. It was a common problem so they heard. It is fuel delivery envolving air imprtant in the pressure balance centered there in the tank hardware. Orifaces were clogged. Blow out all of the connections to make sure fuel is able to leave the tank in sufficient quantities.

Hi Wes and Kate ! Congrats on your success ! It's going to be great to see you back on the water ! I little tip on the yanmar as its the same as on our syndicate boat, and you being new to diesels might not know: It should have 3 decompression levers on top the engine, 1 for each cylinder. And if you find yourself with a flat battery (or have to hand crank it) you can hold them open, get some rotational speed up then close/release 1, while still holding open 2 of them and start it on just one cylinder, then release another lever, it will close itself or you might need to help it and then the 2nd cylinder will start, then you can release/close the 3rd. This way there is less resistance for the starter motor, and the flat battery can start it. But you need to close the salt water cooling intake cock first and then open it as soon as the engine is running, this is to guard against salt water coming back up the exhaust and entering the engine/cylinder potentially causing a hydraulic lock and or corrosion. I start the aft cylinder first and then work forward.
@hthring
@hthring 7 жыл бұрын
Another issue we have is corroded pulley's , the v surface that turns the belt, it wears down the belt, making it narrower, and then fit further into the v and thus fit looser, and then start to slip which wears them down faster and so on and so on. not an issue specific to any engine, but just something to look at if your belts always go loose, or start to wear.

I am SO GLAD you guys are back! I know it must be a good feeling. It's actually good that there is so much to do to the boat but once you got going she's comfortable. Now you'll be doing FIY videos, ha ha. A hank on foresail! I wouldn't know how to reef that. The interior looks GREAT. Love the v birth wood. I had the same problem with the lazy jacks... we had to learn to loosen them and tighten them appropriately. Again, GREAT to see you guys. 😎

Thank you! Feels so good! Everything was a bit of a learning curve like always, the key to raising the main is just some good timing on getting the battens by the lazy jacks, not bad now but still pretty heavy to pull up! Can't reef the jib but its very small, probably would run a double reef main with the full jib then if it got worse just the jib alone perhaps.

My 3gm30f had a similar problem in the Bahamas. The RPM's gradually got so low that the engine would not even idle. It was due to a clogged and corroded exhaust mixing elbow. Easy replacement, even if this did not end up being your problem I would have a spare exhaust mixing elbow on hand. They are supposed to last about 5 years.

Hi guys, congrats on the new boat. A few suggestions if you don’t mind, the tool box, got to go, its square with sharp corners, good for damaging boat stuff, also metal, will cause you’re tools to rust because of condensation. You’re engine, did you replace all fuel filters, change the oils, change the impeller on the water pump? That should be the first thing to do before you go anywhere. Next did you physically check, service and test every through hull to make sure you do not have a potential problem? Every fluid connection on the engine including the exhaust system should checked, not by anybody, but yourself because you need to have the peace of mind to know that you’re vessel is safe and ready. I’ve owned three sail boats over the years and I have done the very same thing on all of them. You don’t need to be a technical to do this, it’s all just common sense, if it looks strange or iffy, question it. Cheers and best of luck Marc.

hey, boat looks great. We were at Cutty when you went by!!! Suggestion on the lazy jacks- we pull them forward to the reef hooks, and only let them free when dropping the main- after Main is buttoned up, bring them forward to reef hooks, they stay out of the way and easier to raise main. Looking forward to watching the adventure continue! Cheers

unfortunately the lazy jacks are the only thing holding the boom up off the dodger from scratching it when the main is not raised :/ a little annoying but I'm sure we will figure something out, maybe we need to make a topping lift or prop it on the dodger with something?

Just bought a Catalina 30 last year. (1985) I also added a good charger genius 2-bank, don't trust the onboard charger mine will boil the batteries. A lot of the gunk inside the engine compartment comes from the belts . Yes replace motor mounts. I/you me both need to service the winches.

I have a special clamp on my yanmar throttle cable.. it has a Single bolt with a nut to lock it in place. put a little pressure on the cable will stop slipping. This a known issue with a very simple solution.
