I think some of this stuff is definitely sequenced .. the vocal of Roger Manning's bit definitely sounds lifted directly from the studio recording .. But this is Jools Holland, so whatever. I think this performance is definitely a mixed bag of sequenced over dubs, some lip synching and real time playing. I don't think I would say this is a definitive live performance although it sounds fantastic. It's a real shame they didn't stick around longer because I'm sure we would've gotten some brilliant live stuff locked down to video/film .. Both albums are absolute classics and some of my favorite music in the world.

For nearly thirty years (okay 28) I have tried to find out who the feck I saw peforming live on Jools Holland one night after I got back from the pub. I remember trying to describe the band to a colleague a few weeks later (no internet or any way of finding out who it was I'd seen back then). I said they sang like Beach Boys, played like 10CC, The Beatles, XTC, Pilot, Wire, Robert Wyatt... All that could be heard in the UK at the time in 1993 was Britpop, Techno, House and a kinda Shoegaze/Grunge thing. Tonight on a different YT video the band "Jellyfish" was named. The name hardwired me back to 1993. In about two clicks I found this clip and the very performance I saw half a lifetime ago. I am blown away again. This is really marvellous. What talent. Now excuse me... I have some CDs to buy and an entire back-catalogue of listening to catch up on... Thank you very much for posting this.

I'm kind of embarrassed that I feel the need to comment on EVERY single Jellyfish (sometimes twice) video in existence on KZbin but it can't be helped. I will always be impressed. Despite trying not to, I will continue to sing their songs at top volume when I'm driving. I will always introduce them to people who are unaware when given the chance - my latest was the guy who works at the car wash. I will always think that their talent is 'Hall of Fame' worthy. I will always wonder about Andy and if he has a huge stash of songs he's written but isn't sharing. I'll probably keep commenting on videos as well, Oh well - till next time. Jellyfish was incredible. I think one of their only crimes was emulating their influences too hard (Beach Boys, Beatles, Queen), but that's also was made them so awesome to listen to. I do agree music like this should be what "sells". If this were mainstream top 40 music, it would be an indicator that the world is a better place than perhaps it actually is.

Hi Pianomagicdude, The mic is inside the bass drum. It is an AKG D-112. We used the May Micing system for the bass drum alone. We put finely shredded newspaper inside to act as a sort of acoustic gate....When the beater hit, it was wide open and then the paper would drop and softly mute the heads....And of coarse on the 'Pet Sounds' style close there was a (Lexicon PCM 70) big hall program that was added during the live mix. Cheers to You, Shalom

Tremendous. Jellyfish's "Spilt Milk" is one of those multidimensional, layered records ("Sgt Peppers", "Pet Sounds", etc) that could be difficult to pull off live, but they're pulling it off here. Every member is doing the absolute most that they can do--sing, multitask, etc. Manning is toggling between the guitar, piano and vocals. It's a shame that they didn't continue on, but according to Jason Falkner, Sturmer was pretty difficult to deal with and had a real jaded attitude already even when they were recording their first album. The most talented bands usually have the most ego to set aside. Considering that Falkner had set aside his own creativity for the first record--and that he's since crafted his own excellent solo albums almost entirely by himself--it's insane to think about the amount of pure talent, skill and character in this. IMHO, it's the character and creativity that probably broke them up.....no member probably had enough of their vision fulfilled.

The fadeout on this song is SO Pet Sounds. Direct reference. It's also incredibly brave because in rock and roll you usually build up energy to big finish but here they do the opposite which is to gradually "peter out". A decrescendo; which is very rare in rock and roll (Genesis did it for ABACAB). Clear evidence of how cognizant Jellyfish were in the process of making rock music.

Oh man, I like them, too, but that's a hard assertion to make given they're not exactly innovators or original. They do a fabulous job of picking influential sources and amalgamating their signature sounds into a nice, tight song package. Master craftsmen from that point of view. Manning has a beautiful bridge section in this song, but I think a lot of people first reaction would be, "Oh, is that the Beach Boys?" I do think Sturmer has a rather unique voice and style, though. He could have been huge or huger, if he wanted to. Sucks.

What a performance! How great to see a song this meticulously crafted, and with immaculate harmonies, performed so perfectly live. Better than the studio version.

And this, kids, is what a great live performance sounds like. Before autotune and before mass produced, cookie cutter, pre-programmed back-up tracks, there was Jellyfish doing spot on harmonies layered upon intricate music that owes a huge debt to musical giants like Brian Wilson, The Beatles and Queen just to name a few.

It’s often said that it’s the friction between band members that creates the musical masterpieces in this world. Never more true than with these cats. Their individual music has greatness, but when combined in Jellyfish, ahhhhhh... PERFECTION. Wish they could have held it together.

Extremely talented and inspired instrumentalists and songwriters hook up with the king of fat analog tone, Jack Joseph Puig. The result? A timeless masterpiece: 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒍𝒕 𝑴𝒊𝒍𝒌 That album is as fresh today as the day it was released. A stunning achievement.

Jellyfish are on the same artistic level as The Beach Boys...even if they stole a few of the same riffs and effects. Love these guys! Their lack of commercial success is a testament to the fickle tastes of the public ear and jaded record industry.
