You cannot be forced to take accountability, all that shit does is push an endless amount of judgement hoping that if you attack him enough the bad feelings you cause will get him to change. It doesnt work. Shame does not make people concious, it makes them hurt it makes it impossible to be present. We are a social species, hurting others is only possible when we are in pain. I shouldnt have to tell you that berrating shane in the hopes that he will submit to your crushing expectations of goodness and health will not encourage him to regard you. He cannot fit into your ideals, and he shouldn't focus on appealing to people who only want him to suffer, who dont want him to have a livelihood. That is disrespectful to himself but you do not want him to respect himself, you want him to feel how you feel about him, you want him to dissappear you would kill all that he is because you do not value his personhood, his experiences, everything he is. What you people strive for isnt growth, isnt accountability, its character death. "Just stop being racially insensitive things" when he is not sensitive to those things. "Stop sexualizing children" when he is a sexualized child. If you have any genuine desire for accountability you need to be present with where he is at and LET him be present in his flaws so he can grow.

The first time I heard him just joke casually about suicide in his comeback video I felt physically sick to my stomach. What kind of self respecting person would try and suicide bait their fans into feeling bad for him all so he doesn't need to really address all the valid shit he was called out for. Not that I doubt he may have had some sort of suicidal episode during his break but to wave that around and joke about it to his fans is just awful.
@wieebb4139

@EmbleerHomba I feel like the ONLY reason people are mad about the casual suicide jokes is because of the incredibly horrible timing and the fact that it’s Shane. A lot of people who struggle with suicidal thought and depression do that. Like the literal exact same way he does it, too. The only difference is he’s supposed to be acknowledging all his bs and instead he’s making jokes and showing off live laugh love signs.

@@wieebb4139 There's a huge difference between speaking casually or jokingly about suicide ideation in your personal life (which is still bad and causes real harm, for you and those around you), and someone doing it on a large platform viewed largely by children in their first video back after extremely serious controversy, esp when that person has a long, long history of using these serious topics to garner positive public opinion where it isn't deserved.

@pastelpanda7309
@pastelpanda7309 2 жыл бұрын
Its called feeling guilty. He is negatively affected by what he did too. I don't know what it is. Its like you don't want people to feel guilty, yet you want an apology/accountability for said guilt. All the people who watched shane's videos had the chance to not or turn off the video. But shane whether on or off videos has to live with who he is and what he has done. If he doesn't know how to do better, he'll make the same mistakes and he's afraid of that. Then he feels bad about himself, thinking he just a bad person and can't make anyone happy. Shane has EXTREMELY low self esteem. He is a people pleaser to an unhealthy degree, and so the fact that people hate him for doing something he thought people would enjoy, kills him inside. I have no doubt in my mind he has contemplated ending his life over it. He likes making videos, but is worried about possibly hurting more people. Something he loves to do, make videos, is hurting people. And that makes him feel bad, he feels really really bad. And regardless of how you've felt or been hurt, you have no right tell him he's not feeling something, his feelings don't matter, scoff at his guilt, etc. How he feels and what he did with that, is how people got hurt in the first place. No human being is able to take accountability for the harm, if they are not allowed to process what causes it, first. "You're bad. Stop doing it" is just not enough. Even though he feels bad for hurting people, just knowing he did doesn't tell him anything about what he was doing specifically, why he did it, or how he did. He did not intend to harm people, therefore specifically looking for a racist person who hates black/and or other race people, a sex offender, etc. is not going to lead him to what he was actually accountable for. To Human beings the worst thing you could be is harmful. They often feel worthless for being unable to take care of themselves or others. They feel inherently wrong. Unworthy, unlovable, and dangerous to everyone, even those they love. So, yeah it is important how bad his racism makes HIM feel. You don't get to use these people's problems, their bad feelings to victimize yourself, then just discard their humanity. They are human beings. People say "We're human, we all make mistakes" "Nobody is perfect" until its a person no one likes or cares about. You hold these people to even higher standards than being human, you know they don't measure up, then you punish them for not meeting your unreasonable expectations. You leave no room for love, campassion, learning, and growth, then you punish them for being stuck. That is cruel. And according to good people, you guys apparently know better. So then why are normal people so abusive to human beings? If you care about people why do you cast away their suffering whenever its convenient for you? Because they're bad? That's a traumatic fantasy. They're hurt, they haven't been cared for appropriately, they either don't know how to care, or are so sick and hurt they don't feel good enough to do so. Morality that doesn't entertain our humanity is less than useless, it is detrimental. It denies the fact that hurting others is indeed harmful to the individual doing the harming.

@@pastelpanda7309 every single apology is glossing over stuff and addressing the LEAST incriminating aspects of his actions. every single time he does this sad boi demeanor and makes it about himself. It wasn’t until this last /weak/ semi-apology that he stopped using a dissociative tactic of “I don’t know who that person is anymore”. And finally admitted that no, that was him and a part of his past. So that’s growth. But it was just lumped in with another one of his series. Which, by the way, what growth? In the haunting series, Rylands sister let him know they were on top of a native burial grounds. Then said they didn’t wanna make it about the natives, and immediately after they heard native drum sounds. Then tried to make it about paying respects to the small minority of white settlers wrongfully killed by the natives. Cuz that’s not as bad as making it about the natives, which were the victims of the larger massacre and witch-hunt. And then they joked about it. Where in his videos has he apologized SPECIFICALLY to the girls who thought it was normal to have inappropriate boundaries with older men cuz of his content. Where has he verbally addressed having young girls twerk for him on tiny chat or omegle. Or addressed having his fans send out of pocket selfies. I hope he has apologized to HeyyoShawna for using her as a prop for x amount of years. No, he has not addressed the worst of it, because his newer audience isn’t as aware of these things. And if he glosses over the stuff, most people are just as dismissive and don’t do research. Do I believe people like to dogpile and make hate mobs on people in an unproductive way? Yes. You see it all the time HOWEVER, he came back with relative success, albeit not as many millions as before. He has very mixed reception. He does still retain a following. Now, as someone who used to consume his content, his “suffering” was never a result of something beyond the consequences of his own actions. So if he wants to get all in his feels about the stuff HE did, why tf would I feel bad. He should feel what he needs to, and THEN grow. We don’t want shallow apologies. You are very correct. However, he didn’t actually apologized for anything beyond broad strokes and vague remarks. Arguably, I legitimately don’t think he has beyond a superficial level. IMO he doesn’t feel bad because he hurt people with his racism. He feels bad because people think he’s an asshole. And if that wasn’t so, he wouldn’t be out there being a white man wanting to make a spoopy scary video on native burial grounds. Which, btw, was info he didn’t have to leave in the video. Mind you, he should be allowed to grow and progress. He has in the way of finally accepting that his past is his past and not a compartmentalized separate person. But as someone in their mid 20s, I’m so tired of the internet infantilizing this grown ass man in his 30s. I do not care how sad boi he is about dealing with the consequences of his own actions. Because he WAS harmful. I don’t give two damns about what his intention was. He harmed people and has put in just as much work actually addressing that harm as he has put into his haunted 3 part docu-series.

So sorry for this long reply and pardon my tardiness I've been contemplating on wether I should comment, but I do believe most of his fans are in there 20s currently. I also speculate that since those fans are now more grown that they probably grew up watching Shane's videos. They know what he's doing is wrong, but they don't want to believe it or perhaps they just idolize him for some reason. I can imagine that his videos helped people through some tough times which in turn maybe built an attachment no matter how horrible the jokes were/are. I wholeheartedly think that Shane keeps on doing these things because he knows he will have at least some people on his side no matter how stupid the excuse. I am in no way condoning nor trying to draw sympathy for Shane's fans, but Feel free to disagree with my statements as it is pure speculation.

I used to watch Shane during his "documentary" (if that is what we are calling it) phase, and I remember him discussing how he gets cancelled every few years and its just a part of his life, I honestly think he doesn't ever learn because he just knows to stay offline for a while and let it blow over. But the way he talks about it now, is exactly how he would back then. Saying things about how he finally doesn't care what other ppl think, how he has grown so much, while showing no growth and trying to gain sympathy and clearly showing he really cares if people like him or watch him more than simply creating content he likes to make and letting that speak for itself. His content does kinda rely on ppl liking him because otherwise you notice how lazy and poorly edited it is, so he kind of has to care what his audience thinks of him, he IS the content

I genuinely don’t understand his stubborn fanbase, like ppl say “they’re just young” but like how young can they be? I watched shane as a kid and was a fan a few years ago before learning everything, and I’m already 21. So like, how is anyone younger still standing by him?? Weird as hell

The "they're just young" card is BS in my eyes. Are they young? Probably. Are young people inherently so mentally incapable that they can't process the basic issues in Shane's content? I genuinely don't think so. It annoys me because while a part of maturation comes with age, most kids have more complex inner worlds than adults give credit, especially the adults too old to remember being a kid.

as someone who has been suicidal for like 9 years and has attempted suicide at some point,, if there's one thing i learned it's that suicide jokes are truly never funny it might seem like haha it's just dark humour, but truly it just makes people uncomfortable, brings down the mood, is annoying to people who are suicidal being reminded about it and just generally making suicide jokes 24/7 only makes your thoughts worse, only makes you feel more like shit like trust me i've been thru it, once i stopped making suicide jokes and tried hard to surround myself with more positive stuff i've gotten a bit better
@char1211
@char1211 2 жыл бұрын
I get that it isn't a great thing to joke about constantly and it's inappropriate in most situations to begin with but as someone who's attempted etc I think suicide jokes are really cathartic. I wouldn't joke about it myself, I generally avoid even mentioning my own thoughts or attempts, so I don't know when or if it would be funny in a personal setting but in comedy and stand up I definitely think it's a topic that's ok and funny to joke about. Because it's something you can't talk about casually I think comedy is a good space to make yourself more comfortable with the memories (obviously work through your issues with a professional first) and kind of destigmatize it for yourself. Also, laughing at the silliness of some aspects is a nice way of finding community and feeling less alone while avoiding ideation or wallowing in dark thoughts. You obviously don't have to find that kind of comedy funny, I just felt like sharing my perspective since we have such different opinions even though our experiences seem similar. Shane's way of joking about it in the video was still inappropriate imo but I think the skeleton joke could have been ok in another context (and with less self pity).

I HATE the copout of "I'm not that person anymore" no. You ARE that person. I believe in change. I believe that "that person" could change. But disconnecting yourself from "that person", turning them into someone else entirely, is just a shitty way of dissolving yourself of criticism. It's easy to avoid self reflection when you don't believe you did anything wrong, rather "that person" was the one who made the mistakes.

I used to be a fan of Shane about three or so years ago. I started watching his videos around 2016 to 2017, I watched mostly his ghost hunting videos and videos with his friends in them. I can confirm he always used jokes about hating himself and wanting to die. He was a bad friend to those in his videos, and because I used to watch him and his past friends and how they interacted it rubbed off on me for a long time, and I still haven't finished unlearned some of those traits. He would belittle his friends' interests, he would insult their appearances, he would be horrible to them. And they would laugh, and made it look like it was okay to act that way. And as someone who isn't good at making friends and feel like I'm on the autism spectrum, I saw that and then I emulated that to try and have a close friend group to laugh and have fun with. I also picked up his humor, joking about suicide and hating myself. I struggled with that for a long time, and it was hard to re-learn that those types of jokes aren't okay and they don't help you. Shane absolutely shouldn't be putting these kinds of jokes out on the internet and making them seem normal, it can lead teens into dark places. Making those jokes impacted my mental image of myself, and it worsened my depression. It added on the normalization of suicidal ideation, which led me to scary places. Shane doesn't deserve a platform, and he clearly hasn't changed.
