My father bought the Hasbro version of this boomerang for me and my brother back in the late 60's. They were made of hard plastic with sharp edges. Took me about ten minutes of unsupervised throwing to take one in the face that sliced into both my eyebrows so they flopped down into my eyes. Still have the scars 55 years later.

I had a commercial one that I got on a camp trip when I was a kid. We went to some sort of boomerang making place in country Victoria somewhere. They told us to hold it vertically and flick it with the wrist. Had many times where we were on the ground with our hands over our heads when we lost sight of it and you could hear it coming in. Ended up running over it with the mower one day. Apparently Boomerangs and Honda mowers are natural enemies in the wild. Great job and very nice paint scheme. Thanks for the video.

Love playing with these…back in 1985, while at a Club Med in Sicily, I took my boomerang along with me….hehe the looks I got from both locals and holiday makers as I threw my boomerang out over the Mediterranean…..priceless, maybe I was and am the only person to have thrown a boomerang on that island…..still got my two boomerangs, one is a very fast smaller one, the other a large slow but very returnable one….love playing around with them, just need plenty of space……get the angle right, a regular hold or a dingle grip, and then catch using a two handed clapping technique…and you can have all the fun you ever want…cheers…now to find an empty space on my small island home of Jersey.

Boomerangs being banned reminds me a lot of Yo Yo's getting banned when I was a kid in the 90's. Kids kept getting better and better yoyo's made out of aluminium and titanium, eventually slinging them on the ultra thin strings and launching them across the playground. Few kids got hit in the head pretty hard and bam, banned. But that's what happen when you have a bunch of kids that do shoot the moon and around the world as many times and as fast as they could all recess long.

He's probably opening a thick wooly scarf with matching bobble-hat, thinking... 'WTF!' 🤔 lol. I'm liking "The cut of your jib", and so have hit that subscribe button and joint your merry crew! When I was a kid back in the 1950s and 1960s we made conventionally shaped boomerangs using 5/8" plywood coated with epoxy paint which helped their longevity. They were heavy but flew great. We tried using the boomerangs to hunt pheasants in the local fields but never got any. The big surprise was when the boomerang came streaking toward the flying pheasants they would crash dive into the brush as though the boomerang was a hawk or eagle attacking them.
@diyforknuckleheads Жыл бұрын
Gotta say they do make a threatening noise when in full flight 👍👍
@BooBaddyBig Жыл бұрын
I think the Aboriginal hunting rangs were basically just heavy sticks and didn't return. Non returning boomerangs work better for hunting because they don't curve. For hunting you want the boomerang to go as straight as possible towards the target, otherwise they'll see the movement across their retina and have a chance to react.

I was inspired by this and figured I’d give it a try on the old laser cutter. Best boomerang I’ve ever had. Comes back with very little effort at all

They should never let a father take his newborn babes home until he can prove he knows what a boomerang that won't come back is. Dad Jokes rule! Also, my daughter loves boomerangs. When she comes home on leave from the Army I think I'll surprise her with a Dad-built version. Thanks for showing us how.

The non joke answer is a throwing stick. Similar shape to a boomerang but designed to fly on an extended straight flight path. Used for hunting.
@spamdump4459 Жыл бұрын
@@dansv1 that may be true, but it won't cause your kids to roll their eyes and groan. We are talking Dad jokes here.

Great video, just a question? While the holes on each arm end are aesthetic, wouldn't it be better to keep that mass on the end to help maintain the spin? Perhaps mone the holes more inward? I don't know, just wondering?
@diyforknuckleheads Жыл бұрын
Thanks Robert! As you can see from the vid, the boomerang comes back quite easily even been thrown from an old bloke with a dodgy shoulder 😂 The holes would affect the aerodynamics a little but not enough to stop it from returning 👍🇦🇺

Ok so now for us city kids, how do you hold it and throw it? That paint job you did was really great!! I’m gonna do that. Thanks!
@diyforknuckleheads Жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it mate. There is a few things you need to consider. First, face the wind and then turn about 45 degrees to it. To throw, hold the boomerang between your thumb and forefinger and release it at around the 2 o'clock point. As you release, flick your wrist to generate extra spin and speed. Like anything, it just takes a little trial and error but you very quickly get the hang of it. Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺

Should be compulsory in schools. So many skills learned so quickly. Big fan of the chuck stick here.
