What made the truly great heroines of sci-fi so great was that they weren't Mary Sues. Ellen Ripley was a traumatized survivor living with PTSD who wanted to face the demon that haunted her nightmares. Sarah Connor was a typical 80s girl living it up until a death machine from the future crashed into her life and forced her to change the entire course of her life. Commander Susan Ivanova was a woman who was so married to her military career because she was terrible at anything resembling a personal life. Modern TV and film creators have forgotten that in order to make a good character, you need to focus on the GOOD part, not the black/female/asian/whatever part. Susan Ivanova wasn't a good character because she was a 'strong woman'; she was a good character because she was a *good soldier* who had her captain's back, loved Earth, and believed in the principles that the Earth Alliance stood for.

This is renowned Hong Kong film actor Tony Chiu-Wai Leung's first role in an American film and his first English-speaking role, even though he has always spoken it fluently. The symbols in the Ten Rings logo are Chinese characters: "quan" (authority), "li" (power), "zhuang" (strong), "wei" (extraordinary), "jie" (outstanding), "shi" (influential), "hong" (grand), "xiong" (mighty), qiang" (strength) and "wei" (dominant). Wenwu is named after the Chinese dual concept of wen (civil administration) and wu (martial administration) This is Simu Liu's first lead role in a film, having previously had supporting roles in his career. The filmmakers cite Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Kung Fu Hustle (2004), Tai Chi Master (1993), the The Matrix (1999) series, Donnie Yen's "Ip Man" films and Jackie Chan films as an influence on the martial arts action. Michelle Yeoh starred in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) Shang-Chi is the first superhero film with an Asian leading protagonist for Marvel Studios This movie was going to be made by Paramount Pictures before Disney bought Marvel. In Xialing's room there is an AC/DC poster implying she is a fan of the band. AC/DC songs are well-known to be part of the Iron Man (2008)'s soundtrack as well the sequels. First film by Destin Daniel Cretton to have a predominantly Asian cast. Highest-grossing film of Destin Daniel Cretton's career. Films mentioned during the commentary recording include The 36th chamber of Shaolin (1978), Clueless (1995), Rush Hour (1998), The Matrix (1999), Kung Fu Hustle (2004), Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010), Oldboy (2013) The Five Obstructions (2003). This is Mark Ruffalo's eighth appearance in the MCU, three of them only in post-credit scenes: Iron Man 3 (2013), Captain Marvel (2019) and this movie. Shang-Chi (and his mother) uses soft martial arts, such as taiji quan, to counter hard martial arts, such as Kung fu against his father. This is a classic dispute in old-school Hong Kong Kung fu movies. The movie marks the return of Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, after his appearance in Iron Man 3 (2013) and the short Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King (2014). In addition, it reveals his fate after the short, which ended in a cliffhanger.

Well technically speaking if she started a fight club at that age (while having been around the others who were being trained), and continued to fight while Shang-Chi stopped and lived a typical life, it would stand to reason that she would be better than him at this point.
@Wayne-jh4mi3 жыл бұрын
Really good reasoning except she didn't receive any training in the first place, both of them are in their mid twenties in This movie shang chi was trained since she was a child and she started at 16. Shang chi being very rusty I can get that but there's almost no reason for her to be better unless she's like a super genius in martial arts but she never came across as that at any point during the movie

@@Wayne-jh4mi Well the movie is flawed for sure, but they did imply that she was watching them and training on her own based on what she observed. Plus if you think about it she has a 10 year advantage over him since Shang-Chi stopped at the beginning of the '10 years' they got to live their lives.

Yes. Yes. And YES!! This, EXACTLY this. It annoys me a lot to hear people praise the film, Shang Chi, because it's not good. It's not 'bad' but it's certainly not good. This review was done so well, dissected the film it without seeming bias or hateful. The only thing that this review didn't reflect my thoughts on was how Marvel simply made a film introducing an Asian guy that can do kung fu that uses magic rings INSTEAD of a guy, who is best known in the comics, with unparalleled martial arts skill that can defeat super powered beings, THOR being one of them, and even monsters BARE HANDED. Thank you for this review, and this has immediately earned my interest in your channel, enough to subscribe. Looking forward to your content.

If I’m considering buying a book about philosophy, I’m going to check into what other philosophers the writer has read. If their response is not having even heard of other philosophers before, I end up with very little faith in their ability to have ideas that others haven’t trampled to death by now. Most likely they only think these new ideas are great because they’ve never heard of the others. The idea that you want to improve your craft by seeing what came before is rather ubiquitous, but if someone’s never heard of others practicing the craft, how can they possibly improve upon the works of the past? It’s no less true for a martial arts actor who claims not to know about Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, etc.

The comic was much more gritty, dirty, and grounded. Iron Man should have had the real Mandarin and not have the bracelets of power be part of this. Now, instead of a good, normal character that can be part of the grounded hero group, he is now a super powered hero that doesn't even need his martial arts anymore. IF yo have the bracelets, why would you need to engage in hand to hand combat??

Frankly, I thought I was the only one who got bored in the third act. My favorite character was the father because he just wanted to get the family back together. I thought it would of been better if their mom wasn't dead and the father was able to save her and then Shang chi was able to show he was good enough for the rings and then his father gave them to him. I also, felt tricked because I almost forgot I was watching a superhero movie in the 1st 2 acts and was prepared to watch a romantic comedy with kung fu and they did not deliver. Also, I would have rather seen Katie's family at the end again to round off before the credits scene instead of that couple they talked to in the restaurant.

Oh come on. Shang Chi's sister didn't beat him in that fight. He CLEARLY says in the scene "I will not fight you". I get that you are whoring for rage clicks, but at least be genuine.

Fine, but that part of the movie was put in to explain to us how she taught herself fighting through only watching. Then explain to us that she was savvy enough to start a underground fighting ring at only 16. She may not be as good as him, but she is damn close without any formal training . So what makes Shang Chi special again??? If you hurt your movie to add a message, in my opinion that’s a failure.
