What made the truly great heroines of sci-fi so great was that they weren't Mary Sues. Ellen Ripley was a traumatized survivor living with PTSD who wanted to face the demon that haunted her nightmares. Sarah Connor was a typical 80s girl living it up until a death machine from the future crashed into her life and forced her to change the entire course of her life. Commander Susan Ivanova was a woman who was so married to her military career because she was terrible at anything resembling a personal life. Modern TV and film creators have forgotten that in order to make a good character, you need to focus on the GOOD part, not the black/female/asian/whatever part. Susan Ivanova wasn't a good character because she was a 'strong woman'; she was a good character because she was a *good soldier* who had her captain's back, loved Earth, and believed in the principles that the Earth Alliance stood for.

@@Maria_Erias those characters had development, and still had their flaws. Which is what made them so good, they overcame old flaws and moved onto new ones that they conquer like a *actual human being* now directors think a woman character in a movie is indistinguishable from the terminator.

It’s a funny thing. When Hollywood didn’t have an agenda to make strong female characters they made strong female characters time after time, brilliantly. Now they just make poorly written, unrealistic characters.

@Ivan Skladchikov And unlike the 1940s and 1950s, when strong intelligent women qua women were common in Hollywood films, today they're incapable of writing strong women as other than strong, toxic men who've had a sex change.

They want to appear virtuous, whilst being the opposite. That’s the problem. They want the public to think of them as good guys who are doing so much for women. But really they’re just following the today’a trends, whatever they may be.

I was fully expecting the sister to follow the dutiful daughter trope, taking on the role that Shang Chi would have if he hadn't run away and abandoned his family. She could have been trained by her father in his place and that would have explained her skill and out-classing him. The fact that she also ran away and taught herself to fight by watching is laughable.

Also, anything with Jet Li and Jackie Chan are great! Although it's not an American film, I thoroughly enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle starring Stephen Chow. The tailor in Kung Fu Hustle was the first I've seen use bracelets in a fight. So, when I saw Marvel's Mandarin use the bracelets in that way, I immediately thought of Kung Fu Hustle and how much I liked that film so much more: it was violent, gory, funny, and action packed as well as emotionally compelling. Basically, everything you would want in an action-kung fu film.

"Marvel's signature storytelling" it's not that basic writing? Marvel mastered the art of three act struture, like other superheroes movies before.....Batman begins, Hellboy, Superman, even the first frigging Power Rangers from the '90s, handled the same thing. X Men from Bryan Singer (talk what you want about him) it's more interesting than some Marvel movies.

Yeah. Marvel's "signature storytelling" is to have _every single_ character origins movie feature the hero fighting a dark version of themselves, and to end with a massive, incomprehensible CGI blowout. It's boring and hollow, and it became tiresome five movies ago.

True to Phase 4 form, the lead male superhero is crowded out of his own movie by the hero's sister, his comedy lady friend, his mystery mom and stoic aunt, his lame-excuse-for-the-Mandarin father, two dragon things, and faux Mandarin comedy relief guy. Good pick up on the "I don't need no man" theme. How did the mom, aunt, sister get trained, how does lady friend become a pro marksman after one day? Summary: Soy over-frenetic opening, over-long boring middle, over-confusing climax. Bootleg time.

Infinity War or Guardians of the Galaxy are by any measure the best MCU has to offer, and the only Marvel produced movies which at least approach the level of art (not some formulaic action mess, done by the numbers). But, all in all the comic book movies, their utter mediocrity married with huge popularity, are the worst thing which has ever happened to western cinema, and are in a huge part to blame for it's current condition. Where are the movies like Blade Runner, Alien, Terminator, Indiana Jones, classic Star Wars, classic Superman, Jurassic Park, or even RoboCop, or at least something like frigging utterly silly Independent Day or Mummy? I just mention blockbuster movies because when it comes to art cinema, it's even worse.

Katy was included a little too much in the family stuff. It was unbelievable that when a father talks to his 2 children after several years about their mother and plans to invade her home town and showing the water map etc , he would have a strange girl stand there in the middle of his family interaction. Would be more realistic if Katy was used minimally and only for comedic relief, rather than a side kick that diminishes the main character at every turn.

This is renowned Hong Kong film actor Tony Chiu-Wai Leung's first role in an American film and his first English-speaking role, even though he has always spoken it fluently. The symbols in the Ten Rings logo are Chinese characters: "quan" (authority), "li" (power), "zhuang" (strong), "wei" (extraordinary), "jie" (outstanding), "shi" (influential), "hong" (grand), "xiong" (mighty), qiang" (strength) and "wei" (dominant). Wenwu is named after the Chinese dual concept of wen (civil administration) and wu (martial administration) This is Simu Liu's first lead role in a film, having previously had supporting roles in his career. The filmmakers cite Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Kung Fu Hustle (2004), Tai Chi Master (1993), the The Matrix (1999) series, Donnie Yen's "Ip Man" films and Jackie Chan films as an influence on the martial arts action. Michelle Yeoh starred in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) Shang-Chi is the first superhero film with an Asian leading protagonist for Marvel Studios This movie was going to be made by Paramount Pictures before Disney bought Marvel. In Xialing's room there is an AC/DC poster implying she is a fan of the band. AC/DC songs are well-known to be part of the Iron Man (2008)'s soundtrack as well the sequels. First film by Destin Daniel Cretton to have a predominantly Asian cast. Highest-grossing film of Destin Daniel Cretton's career. Films mentioned during the commentary recording include The 36th chamber of Shaolin (1978), Clueless (1995), Rush Hour (1998), The Matrix (1999), Kung Fu Hustle (2004), Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010), Oldboy (2013) The Five Obstructions (2003). This is Mark Ruffalo's eighth appearance in the MCU, three of them only in post-credit scenes: Iron Man 3 (2013), Captain Marvel (2019) and this movie. Shang-Chi (and his mother) uses soft martial arts, such as taiji quan, to counter hard martial arts, such as Kung fu against his father. This is a classic dispute in old-school Hong Kong Kung fu movies. The movie marks the return of Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, after his appearance in Iron Man 3 (2013) and the short Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King (2014). In addition, it reveals his fate after the short, which ended in a cliffhanger.

If I’m considering buying a book about philosophy, I’m going to check into what other philosophers the writer has read. If their response is not having even heard of other philosophers before, I end up with very little faith in their ability to have ideas that others haven’t trampled to death by now. Most likely they only think these new ideas are great because they’ve never heard of the others. The idea that you want to improve your craft by seeing what came before is rather ubiquitous, but if someone’s never heard of others practicing the craft, how can they possibly improve upon the works of the past? It’s no less true for a martial arts actor who claims not to know about Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, etc.

I also, felt tricked because I almost forgot I was watching a superhero movie in the 1st 2 acts and was prepared to watch a romantic comedy with kung fu and they did not deliver.
