@@hcxpl1 Yeah, I dunno why, but after I wrote this, my brain began trying to come up with a scenario for it. So, here's what I picture: The Avengers are split up trying to keep the McGuffin from Kang or whoever the big bad is, in LA. When the team splits off, Happy taps Luis and Katy on the shoulder and asks them to follow him. They sneak through sidestreets until coming to this old, rundown, boarded up warehouse area full of what looks like old breweries. Katy cracks wise, asking if the plan is to huff asbestos. Happy opens two massive, old wooden doors. He turns to a junction box on the wall beside them, he opens it and turns the lever. The lights roar back into operation to reveal that all the buildings on this block are one massive one and it's filled with dusty Mclarens, Lamborghinis, Teslas, Astin Martins, every sports vehicle they could want, not to mention cargo helicopters and fighter jets. Luis and Katy are amazed. Happy, having seen it all way too many times says "Oh yeah, companies used to send Tony new models of their vehicles to see how quickly he could jailbreak them and they'd pay us consultation fees to suggest upgrades. Take your pick, and do it quickly." The camera cuts to outside the building where the bad guys team has tracked them down. The leader does a hand signal telling two of his men to try the door while the others wait, guns ready; Then the door blows open as a McClaren driven by Happy, Suped up H3 Hummer driven by Luis, and fully loaded Lamborghini driven by Katy blow through the doors and drift out of the warehouse.

Being a valet parker means Katy gets to apply her driving skills... in the same way an olympic track runner can apply his running skills by working as a waiter at a taco shack, since that requires you to walk around. She is incredibly talented, and could achieve so many things with those talents, but she chooses to stay in a low-paying job that allows her to see cars that she likes and occasionally sneak them out for a joy-ride. Her job is low effort, low reward. I heard that Marvel Movies have a different team for the final battle scenes. Where the CGI splurge at, things go BOOM BOOM BOOm. Meaning the endings are set in stone. So..the scripts are written and then shot to serve those endings. At the cost of flexibilty of the script. Even if the writers come up with a better story thread midway the shoot...they scratch it because it conflicts with the multi million dollar CGI fight scene at the end of the movie. 😅

The Katy character was necessary role because the usual Marvel film follows the path of the lead character. Katy serves as the role of the viewer. We follow Tony Stark become Iron Man. We see how Thor becomes more responsible. We see Steve Rogers become Captain America. We do see an arc with Shang-Chi but there is a crucial difference. The story of Shang -Chi has a secret. We have to stay "outside" of Shang Chi until we learn the truth. Could the film be done with Shang Chi obscuring and hiding the reality of his past? But the script would have been more complicated and probably harder to write. Glad that some of the best jokes were not given away in the trailer - the way the film ended by linking back up with the dinner with the friends and then later the karaoke was perfect.

I’m saying this as a non-American, so maybe Asians over there might have a different POV, but it’s quite common for Asians to still live with their parents/guardians well into adulthood. Reason may vary. Katy’s mom or grandma might’ve been the one demanding her to stay, maybe she did stay to cut cost, or maybe she’s the only person with a steady job and is the one paying rent for her family. She seems to be fatherless, so I’m banking on the latter being the case for her living situation.

As an Asian-American, I think the whole "Katey is a valet driver because she's not living up to her potential" concept is an unfortunate part of many of our cultures. The idea is that our relatives traveled across the Pacific (often fleeing political or economic hardship) and ended up working long hours in labor-intensive jobs, just so their children could have a better life, i.e. one without the same hardships they endured. So imagine being a parent going through literal decades of life-threatening struggle, only for your kid to end up no better than you are, and maybe even worse. It's a pretty messed up part of our upbringings as 2nd gen Asian-Americans that gets its context lost in translation when non Asian audiences are given a glimpse at our experiences.

Helping the algorithm by jumping in and saying that Tom Holland Spider-Man is my favorite. I love them all for their own strengths but I love Tom’s actual teenager vibe. Fits the character so well to have school and girl problems while not looking like a 30 year old.

I recently binged Implicitly Pretentious' series of video essays on spider-man. He has some fascinating takes. He gives solid arguments for Andrew being the most faithful adaptation, followed by Tom and last by Tobey. This, when comparing them to Stan Lee's original run, holds up really well

Thank you very much for this. I really appreciated how you delved into this topic. It shows a necessary aspect that was left on the cutting-room floor. You are awesome.

Brilliant! Katie and Shang driving that bmw in the beginning is the best valet joy-riding scene since Ferris Bueller. She may have even drifted that car. Hopefully moving forward she can get behind the wheel in Monaco like Tony did.

Ok so granted the dweller was staying mostly still at the time, and it’s such a large target that realistically anyone with basic skill should be able to hit it, but the way her shooting it is depicted in this film (and honestly throughout the MCU) is really just a slap in the face to Hawkeye and how hard he must have practiced to do what he does only marginally better than a girl that just picked up a bow.
@onijester563 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Her shot is relatively straight, and could be quite a bit off of a bullseye. Hawkeye, meanwhile, performs trick-shots that often invoke rebounds and the prediction of human-sized moving targets from an equivalent distance.

In a traditional Chinese family like Katy’s a female living alone would be viewed worse than living with her family. Her family would be upset if she moved out unless it was to get married.

I wanted a scene where Razorfist sees his car stolen, Wen-Wu tells him to take his car, he gets excited because the boss is letting him drive his car, but we cut to where it’s a stick shift and Wen-Wu sees him on a security camera and gives an awkward 😬

I think you're totally missing the ethnic joke. As an Asian American you cannot just be a valet. If her parents are anything like mine it's ok to enjoy driving but you better aspire to be F1 driver. No joke from a young age we are taught that we carry generations of expectations on our shoulders. Im pretty sure we all need therapy. But I agree with you, Katy is no slouch and she knows what makes her happy. More power to you Katy

Tom Holland. Maybe its because hes my age, but it was the first time I really identified with a Spiderman in a meaningful way. They portrayed mid-late 2010s high school in a very accurate way, and I love his general attitude.

Katy is clearly taking out expensive sports cars for joyrides on the regular so she's probably not "good at her job" which should consist mostly of parking. But still, it is skill-building and credit for not getting caught.

I think the point of the "I can't do anything" is more of Katy herself not taking seriously what she _can_ do. Driving is something she can do well, so it's not really anything that counts. Plus she's hearing constantly about her degree at Berkeley, and how she's not doing an important job with it.

You know, I just put in a comment somewhere in here that Katy could totally just use her connection to Wong to become a magic chauffeur, just driving insanely fast through ring portals, but then I realized something...Spider-Man doesn't actually have a license right now, and for all we know Tony could have already made the comic's accurate Spider vehicles, so she could probably drive Peter's Spider-Car for those long trips into the suburbs, or up the side of some buildings.

I’m like halfway through the video and I feel like you’ve already completely undermined your own argument. If a super talented NASCAR driver announced that they were retiring from racing to pursue a job in valet parking, I don’t think that would be considered a lateral move. It would be considered a complete waste of their potential. And yea, Katy does seem to enjoy her job, but only because she keeps breaking the rules to go on joy rides. And then when she gets the chance to really use her skills later on, she comes alive, which suggests that her job is actually super stifling for her and the only thing holding her back from something more is fear, not ability. Finally, concerning the lucky arrow shot at the end. I’ve seen this come up as a complaint from a lot of people, but to me, the point of that shot is that it’s lucky. It was a very low chance that she would be able to make it… not 0%, but close to. And yet, despite the low odds of success, which would normally have stopped her from trying, she gives it a shot. That’s the point. Even when the odds are next to nil, you’ve still gotta try, because sometimes, just like Katy did in that moment, you might get lucky.
