Shania Twain Wants To Work With Ex-Husband Again

Graeme O'Neil reacts to Shania Twain admitting that she wants to collaborate with her ex-husband, Robert 'Mutt' Lange, again.

She wants to work with him because most of all, she has healed. When you heal, you can forgive, and vice versa. Besides that, she knows they work well together and he has a positive effect on her creativity and talent, he knows how to bring it out, he knows what suits her best. If she can do it, if she can deal with him in spite of the terrible betrayal, why not? She is the only one who can decide that.

I think that while that attitude is smart (she knows it would be a smart move), its also incredibly gracious. I couldn't work with someone who did that to me. And I mean, she may do *better* with him, but she's still going to do well with her talent...but where has he been?

Shes such an incredible woman for being open to this idea like she is. I think its hard to judge the post Mutt albums because i think shes probably had to over produce a little bit to compensate for her new voice these days. And the Now album was really an album for her, again production-wise she was probably trying to figure out how to best present her new voice which must have been challenging.

Mutt isn't responsible for all her hits. She sang four of the songs she wrote to Mutt upon their meeting over the phone. The producers at Mercury Nashville wouldn't let her put those songs on her first record. When a new president came along for the record company he was all for Shania putting those records on the second album which was the Woman in Me. People who don't know the history of Shania Twain she read articles and the book about her called the Biography by Robin Eggers. She's had great success since the break up. Mutt made an album with Nickelback that went nowhere. And a wrote a song for Carrie underwood that was a flop. Do we hear his name anymore. Does anyone ever mention that other singers are successful because someone wrote and produced their songs?

@@donnabrown9602 I doubt what Shania sung over the phone to Mutt was anything like what he produced. He changed those songs, and Shania acknowledged that. The lyrics on her albums were generally cheesy, but his production, her voice and charisma made it mega. I like Shania, but she hasn't written/produced anything approaching a hit without Mutt, which demonstrates that he was the hit maker. He's produced some of the biggest albums in Rock history, two are in the top 10. No other producer has achieved that.

@@donnabrown9602 The reason for Nickelback not doing well had everything to do with the fact that all of their songs were whiny in nature... something that turned off anyone but their most hardcore fans. Plus, Mutt's ROCK production style now sounds a bit dated. Those MASSIVE background vocals (96 tracks in total in many instances) were an earmark of the mid to late 80s and early 90s. However, for Shania's first album he completely shifted production styles... and for a new album with her could easily do it again. However, without the benefit of terrestrial radio, I doubt that her material would catch on as it did since it was so fresh when it first appeared on the scene.

If she was such a prolific writer, why hasn't she produced anything good for over a decade? Meanwhile, Mutt picked up another Grammy and has produced multiple hits and worked with big stars since then.

Mutt is the consummate songster who has an incredibly well-developed (AND well-honed) sense of song. The majority of those who have worked with him have sold a TON of records because he creates memorable songs. What really caught my ear was how he so easily, and rapidly, moved from his testosterone charged production style with Def Leppard and Bryan Adams, to a very stripped out and beautifully sparse production style on Shania's first album, and keeping with that for a while with other artists. However, in a similar fashion to Brian Wilson (who only hears music in his head in the style of the Four Freshmen), Mutt has an unmistakable production style with massive background vocals that he returned to when working with Nickelback, etc. I DO believe that IF he were to do a project with Shania that it would be a MONSTER success no matter what they did together.

Yeah the reason Mutt doesn’t want to work with her is because she put him on blast for years and years. Does she really think he would forget it all? There have been discrepancies in some of Shania's stories in the past, like her claim to be an orphan (her father died just a few years ago), and raising her siblings afterwards (her brother says she didn't raise him, and that he was sent off to military school). She also claimed to be a foreman on her stepfather's foresting business, and that she bossed around grown men. I find that story to lack credibility. That's why I find Mutt's version more believable. There's also the matter of birthdays. Shania loves having a big fuss made over her birthday. You know what she did for Mutt's birthday after she became famous? Bought him a box of chocolates. That's it. She won't allow her son to have birthday presents. He gets a cake. She says that's so he won't be spoiled. Whenever he got presents as a child, she made him give all of them away except for 3. Why does she get to keep lavish gifts? Why doesn't she give away all her clothes except for 3 items? How about her jewels, and homes? Do you see what I mean? I know that Mutt's ex's are all friendly with him, and that he gave Shania a very generous divorce settlement. He even lets her use his studio. She does seem to be cracking up lately, and I wonder if it is guilt that is driving her. My two cents.
