By nature, we don’t get the benefit of the doubt. Like when Skip said “Put your glasses back on”! I don’t care what type of Brutha you are, your first instinct would be to say, “make me. Let me see you make me put them back on”! However, there are ways to professionally get your point across. Using the same example, if Skip told me to put my glasses back on, I just would have e simply slid my glasses closer to him, and looked square in his eyes. It’s defiant. It sends the message, and not one word has to be said. We as black men can’t afford to just catch a fade in a professional environment. Trust me, I’m a lawyer for 29 years. Mid 90’s, white dudes were trying slick ish every where, especially being I was the ONLY black person, man or woman. Even the cleaning crew was white. They used me for their quota, which I knew, and I used them for their prestige, then bounced to another firm after four years. They looked good on my resume, especially since it was my first job in that career. We as black men have to play the long game. Shannon did that. He has things in the works, and Skip didn’t know it. When everything was right, Shannon made his move. Didn’t give Skip time to prepare. That’s how you do it. It’s exactly what I did. Networked behind the scenes while still doing my job, had a couple of offers from firms willing to “buy me out@ so to speak, talked more behind the scenes, secured what it would take me to leave, they agreed, and I bounced.

I think his biggest move was hiring Shannon a loud, but charismatic man, who stood by his own moral code and witty responses, but was someone unafraid of another mans stature, but in the same sentence it also was Skips riskiest hire for those same reasons. The people love Shannon, so the moment you went full Skip on him we all were willing to turn on him.
