Tonfa Martial Arts - Devastating Tonfa Techniques. I love the Tonfa and this is the weapon I keep next to my bed just in case! In Chinese it is called the Guai (3rd tone) 柺 and the tonfa is tremendously powerful. Watch me use the tonfa to destroy a thick bo staff made out of rattan! Double Tonfa is today's Weekend Weapon of Kung Fu! Enjoy

I remember stumbling across one of your videos years ago. So glad to see Tonfa tutorial. I was introduced to more than 12 Tonfa years ago, and only recently revisited them. The simplicity and augmentation to already applicable body strikes is mind blowing. Genuinely one of the most versatile martial weapons in existence . really enjoyed this vid.

My personal favorite things about the Tonfa 1. It is surprisingly amazing for joint locking. 2. Gwai means crutch, it's a double set based off of Bodhidharma's Crutch called the Ox Horn Crutch. 3. China and Japan both share this weapon and if it's the Chinese origin or a shortened cane or the Japanese origin of a mill crank handle, the origins are unexpected and fascinating. 4. Single or Double, they are extremely effective defensive weapons and can block practically any weapon. ( Included the over hyped Katana) 5. They are perfect for duel wielding with any other single handed weapon. My personal favorite combo is Gwai in the left hand, Dao in the right.

I've had very little weapons training, but always loved the tonfa. It's a very organic-feeling weapon to me, a natural extension of the few years of martial arts training (basic Jeet Kun Do/ american freestyle) that I did have the chance to take. Love this video.

I suppose you could use the 柺 character, but I've seen the 拐 character used way more often to describe this weapon. Also if you use 2 of them it's pronounced Shuāng Guǎi 雙拐. (1st and 3rd tone) The 套路/form looks awesome btw. Glad to see you're one who promotes this weapons Chinese roots, not just the Japanese ones. Also the symbols you wrote say Shaolin. Keep making more videos! ;)

You should really do more videos involving the tonfas. I take taekwondo and do the tonfas and I honestly think that the tonfas are often underestimated and under used by many people in martial arts. You don't see many things on the tonfas online or on KZbin. You could find probably a billion thing on the bo staff or the nun chuks, but never anything on the tonfas. I would just really appreciate seeing more people spread the amazing features of the tonfas and what you could do with them online.

Epic. A nice weapon of choice - it is legal, semi-lethal (depends on the user), comfortable to use in close quarters, doesn't backfire. The only disadvantage in my opinion is that it is kinda slower than light blade weapons because of the flipping movements (maybe It's just your execution of it, idk). My favourite blunt weapon paired with nunchuks now :D

Master Mace - from a combatives, and long-time instructor perspective - your katas are great for Tai Chi, but not for hurting people. The two, *have* to be separate things - intentional violence has to be fast, deliberate, and utterly devastating. Tai Chi is used to bring patience, and temperance to violence - the movements simulate violence, but the spirit of Tai Chi is non-violence. Incorporating some PR-24 techniques into your program, for the lessons that are specific to violence, might not be a bad idea. The Tonfa operates off of human body mechanical, kinetic energy and... intent. You can "whip" a Tonfa, with the whole body behind it - to devastating effect. Hit not just the body of your enemy, but your enemy's weak areas. Then, have a cup of tea with them... 😄 💖 and respect Master Mace. 🤘🤠🤘

My preferred weapon (if only scythes could be folded to the same size as these tonfa) are in fact, tonfa. The reasons I like current ones are here, but the possible custom versions make me think. I mean really - tonfa are like large wooden handguns. Its not too much of a stretch to think they could be combined. Tonfa / desert Eagles. Think about it for a bit. Night people.

Hi!! I just watched your video for the first time about the use of tonfa and it really is amazing!! I have a tonfa at home as well but I am not good at using it. I have a friend way back when I was in high school and he has lots of weapons for training.. He told e to choose from all the weapons he has on his house and I really have a hard time choosing one (probably because he told me to think carefully though "the weapon chooses his wielder not the other way around) so I tried to step back and look at all weapons he has.. then I suddenly notice on thing that actually is quite not standing out of all the weapons he has but caught my attention.. that's the tonfa. so I felt something to it and decided that I will use that as my weapon of choice no matter what happens :) ........ I kept on looking at the tonfa and among the other weapons and my other friends said that its not that deadly.... Well they have a point because it does not have a blade like swords or the naginatas or quite long like staff or rods to put enemies at the distance. But I think I can use it for defense :) ... I think what is important is defense... there are places that I cannot bring sharp objects or narrow places where long weapons are not advisable to use. but by using a tonfa I can say that it will be a perfect extension of my body and just move the way my body really works:) I would love to learn more about the tonfa and how to be better on using it :) I hope you can help me more .. thanks!

We were trained with the tonfa.. used in the south African police, I dropped a guy over 6 ft with one stroke after he was threatening, one sweep to the side of his head back hand, dropped and was out of it for 10 minutes , I was actually stressed thinking I had killed him but he woke up with a intensive head ache and a sore jaw and lump of note, I have huge respect for the tonfa I also sleep with my tonfa close by , I agree , used probably one of the best self defense weapons around, keeping your distance, its effectiveness is devastating used correctly..

In my humble opinion, tonfa is the second best weapon in the world. The first place remains with butterfly knives of Wing Chun. But those are more dangerous. Even with protective actions there is a huge chance of lethal injury for the opponent... So tonfa takes the first place among non-lethal equipment 😁. With a pair of wooden tonfas my friend managed to survive an attack of five weaponed burglers in the corridor of his house untill the police arrived. I always keep a tonfa by my front door in case unwanted visitors arrive 😁. It's one of the best inventions of the ancient fighters!👊

What's better; police-style tonfas which usually allow you to hold it from the short end, vertically, or tonfas with squared middles like your own, which you usually cannot hold from the short end, not very comfortably at least?
