Installing the key was indeed the way to go. That will work just fine.

Yes, I should have gone for that from the beginning.

Hi Clive. Such an excellent result. Adding the key was ……….. the key to success. Well done. I await with anticipation to see how the lathe faired after its long journey and how you have planned for everything to fit into your workshop. 👍😀

Thanks, Andrew! 😂 I am currently making a hole in the garage wall to aid access from the rear since space is very limited.

Hi Clive, perplexed as to why no lock on the dividing head. I think it is mandatory for gear and spline cutting for accuracy. Never seen or used one without, maybe a future project to install. Tightening the backlash without locking will introduce unwanted vibration to the gearset..

Thanks for your comments, Willem. I am sure you have more experience with dividing heads than me. When I get time I will take a close look at it and see if a lock can be added - or whether there is something I am overlooking.

Nice build! I also use my shaper for that and have made some tooling, but yours is much nicer. Good luck on the Colchester I have a 13x36 Master from the 60s its a great machine!

I’ve got the same dividing head. Always puzzled me there’s no lock but it doesn’t seem to matter.

Glad I'm not the only one. It doesn't seem like an omission but a design choice. Not sure whether it is worth adding a lock.
