Sharing ideas and building a better future based on freedom | István Kiss | The Danube Institute

The Institute of Public Affairs’ Executive Director, Scott Hargreaves, and Director of the Foundations of Western Civilisation Program, Dr Bella d'Abrera, sat down with the Executive Director of the Danube Institute, István Kiss, during his recent tour of Australia.
István is a political scientist and an international relations expert. He has earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Pázmány Péter Catholic University and at the University of Edinburgh. Currently, he is working on his PhD at his alma mater. From 2013 to 2018 he worked at the Századvég Foundation first as a Research Fellow then as a Senior Research Fellow. Formerly, he worked as a Political Adviser in the Prime Minister’s Office of Hungary.
Ever since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the centre of gravity in Europe has been shifting to central and eastern Europe. As socialist ideals are making headway once again in the West, and the avowedly Marxist China have an ever-greater influence, the legacy of communism and the opportunities of Western Civilisation have come to the fore.
Meanwhile, the region and the West generally are coping with the repercussions of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, where a local and historical understanding is imperative.
The Danube Institute was established in 2013 in Budapest, with the aim of encouraging the transmission of ideas and people within the countries of Central Europe and between Central Europe, other parts of Europe, and the English-speaking world.
The Danube Institute is committed to four philosophical loyalties: a respectful conservatism in cultural, religious, and social life, the broad classical liberal tradition in economics, a realistic Atlanticism in national security policy, and exploring and extending the related concepts of democracy and patriotism.
