Been watching guitar theory and you tube teachers for years, but not really committing to any program. When I first saw one of your videos, I thought: Who is this guy, so unformal, rambling at times and so easy going? Soon after I found myself signing up for guitar wisdom , I am so impressed with your style and you are always very entertaining. I was born in 56 and so glad to finally focus on my life long dream to become a guitarist. Thank you! You are a dream of a teacher and a wonderful performer. Just because you are not on tour all the time does not mean that you are not a superstar and you know it. Thank you for making yourself so available. I am thrilled and shocked to have found you.

You didn't share too much. I found this very inspirational. I'm in my mid-40s and trying to make up for lost time. I would love to be a full-time music student, but I don't have the time or money. Content like this is a godsend (or heavenly, like Tomo!). I'm new to your channel but hoping you have content that can help a small pudgy-handed fella like me clean up my guitar playing. (Sympathetic string noise is killing me right now!) If you've never made a video for small-handed guitar players, I highly recommend it ;) Thanks, Tomo!

I had the good fortune to listen to this video this morning which was made 11 months ago but the algorithm decided it to display today so I gave it a listen. I was very stressed out when I began watching, the day seemed like it would be a disaster. Somehow while watching I began to calm down and when you finished your very engaging presentation I was in a much better state of mind . I think I might be able to accomplish something today. I appreciate your presentations very much. Your more recent material and now this one. There is such a wealth of inspiration on your channel. My father came from a far away land to build his life in the UK back in late 60s. I have enormous respect for people who manage this kind of journey. It’s probably easier now due to the times we live, access to information and ability to meet people who had done this. Back in the day, your were literally on your own and dependant on meeting nice people to help out.

Thanks for answering my question! I agree that it is an honor to be able to teach, and hopefully your students are thankful that you took that path in life. Some people get the gig to go on big stages, other people get the gig to go into music education - there is a place for both! I have been a higher education mentor/tutor since 2003, so I really understand where your heart is. Some people know their craft and cannot teach it while others just have an innate ability to help people learn. Good thing you ended up as a teacher, as you said, so you’d be able to help many people improve their guitar skills. I also like the explanation about your name! When you said you wrote books for other instruments, does that mean you play instruments besides guitar? If so, I had no idea and would love to see that! It would also be neat to see you explain whether you’d change or add anything in the videos/books you published being that you wrote them so long ago. Thanks again! It’s really nice of you to share your personal experiences. You are helping many people by explaining the paths you’ve taken in life, giving your perspectives, etc.

By the way, I wish I could see the print on the pillow next to you. I think my mom may have painted the design when she worked at one of two textile studios in NYC during the 70’s. Do you (or your wife, lol) know where/when you got the pillow or who makes it if there’s a tag on it? My mom specialized in “tight-hand” designs like intricate paisleys, teeny florals, etc. She passed away in 2018, but we have some of her painted designs from a portfolio that she saved - and I’ve learned how to tell my mom’s little flecks in her work. I’d know for sure if I saw the pillow up close. We used to see her prints years ago. Then we started seeing a lot of her designs again on all sorts of items in the last 10-15 years like shirts, bedding, curtains, handbags, makeup bags, etc. Mom once spotted something she painted on a $2000 designer bag (as a studio artist, she didn’t own the rights to her own work and she was fine with that). We have found her work at JCpenny, TJMaxx/Homegoods/Marshall’s, Macy’s, Ralph Lauren, and more. She said that many of the colors have been changed from the originals to reflect more modern preferences, but all the designs we’ve seen have been totally unchanged otherwise. It’s heartwarming when I spot something she put hours of work into creating. She went to F.I.T. and loved textile design, but stopped to raise me and my siblings full time. :-)

Speaking of Kanji ... I was studying Japanese twice, for 3 months during university years, and for 1 year and a quarter 10 years after that. Kanji is the real obstacle to me, so much to remember! One thing I'd like to confess ... back then I was listening to quite a lot of J-Pop and J-Rock music. One of my favorites was Le Couple, which I know the singer name is Fujita Emi, but not the guitarist. I know that they are married and has the same last name, but I never know the first name of him.... When I heard about you, I thought "may be he is the husband". Luckily we do have something call "Wikipedia", otherwise I'd still be misunderstanding. I remember this because, during my Japanese classes, sometimes sensei play Le Couple's songs on a portable player. These classes are in different institutes, sensei are different person, yet the same song is played. I think they must be quite popular, at least in the past (I did know the band even before taking those classes, btw).

I really like hearing your stories about trying something and then if it doesn't work you try something else. I approach my guitar playing the same way. Sometimes I get stuck on a chord progression and can't leave it, for example GCD stuck for maybe 4 years thats all I played, luckily not in a band. To me the guitar is all about feel after the basics are taken care of all strings guitar working properly and tuned but I don't like theory or learning about shapes which makes it a little difficult to progress. In a way its the same technique you used in life for guitar. This sound means this and you play it this way is not in my Dna that is probably why when I play with my friends who play guitar they don't like my way of playing cause I break too many rules. It is just how I am programmed. I do listen to theory and listen to different techniques constantly but they just don't stick. To me its like my glass is so full that I can only take a little theory and that is it otherwise too much static and nothing comes out. Hard to explain maybe someday I will have a realization and figure something out until then just keep on plucking on the guitar.

Hi Tomo, another great video! Love seeing Max and Dexter, more please! I have a question ... when a superstar (for example John Mayer) comes to you for lessons ... what do they (personality) bring and what do you offer (lessons) that makes them go from beginner to become a superstar?? I think you discussing this topic would make a great video.

@@TomoFujitaMusic I am also a teacher and totally understand...it is inherently rewarding to share your expertise for the benefit of other instead of yourself... therein lies the spiritual part...displacing your ego is always healthy...and teaching is its own reward. Instructing others also sharpens your own understanding of the fundamentals...win win. I learn as much as I teach.

@@TomoFujitaMusic Listen up Max, your dropdead gorgeous furry purrbaby. The other day your 'dad' unboxed a new Ibanez guitar loudness machine and carelessly threw the box up up and away in the music room. Go have a look. It's a perfect box for a raggdoll snugglebug to sleep and/or relax in. With a little luck it didn't end up stuck in a ceiling fan. Well, have to go. I'm working through and enjoying "accelerate your guitar playing". Makes me and my 5 watt practice amp purr a little as well. All the best from the Netherlands for you and your 'dad'. p.s. hope you're alreay enjoying that box. :-D
