I’ve been playing for 35 years, and this is the first theory lesson I’ve understood since Mel Bay Book 1. Playing the G D Em C with a variety of Root, first inversion, and second inversion is a quite satisfying. And the idea of practicing within this as a limitation makes it an exercise in mindfulness. I also discovered about 3 fragments of Phish songs hiding in there. I can see immediately that they’re all there somewhere. Thank you.

So happy to hear that. Thanks so much for sharing! Theory is all about intervals & chords or scales on one string approach! Please enjoy playing through chords! Those are basic training on ear training & theory knowledge. I V vi- IV so you can change keys!

Tomo, I'm a lifelong piano player, but only started guitar when I retired. Your lessons about learning guitar apply to just about every other thing. Limit the area you're learning and focus, have fun while learning, stop, drink a beer and be happy. And you're a comedy genius like Mr. Bean. Thank you, GT Sipe

I was persistent about why I can not play like others. I gave up playing then again I started playing guitar just because of your lessons on youtube. It made me try one more last time for learning music and it opened my door. Gradually my progress became visible in my eyes how I want to play. Again today this lesson was so good that it made me smile above everything I was worried about. For me, these lessons are valuable to learn more. Thank you for existing.

Well then hit me upside the head!!!!! 877 is B and 775 is D ❗️❗️❗️ All right there nice and close. Thanks for leading me to this result. I learned about so many mistakes I was making, such as being a noisey player, not internalizing what I've been learning so I wasn't able to improvise with the information I thought I knew! and I couldn't even began to even understand triads but this video has gave me so much in just 30 minutes! Now, at 67, I finally understand it and it's significant because arthritis in my left hand fingers now prevent me from playing certain chords. I look forward to learning to play alternative fingerings for those chords. Thankful to Tomo for the lesson 👍😃

Good job! C E G on 123 set stings. X X X 5 5 3 = X X X R M3 5 ... learn them slowly without memorizing! That's root position. Then E G C on 123 set strings X X X 9 8 8 = X X X M3 5 R .. That's 1st inversion! G C E on 123 set strings X X X 12 13 12 That's 2nd inversion. That's all you need to know first! Take your time!

Tomo, your lessons (here and in Guitar Wisdom) is the one of best things that has happened to me in my musical journey. I've been playing the instrument for 15 years, and I was always frustrated about simply picking up tabs and not knowing what's going on musically (for eg, oh they switch from the fourth chord to a fifth). Trusting the process and just consistently practicing (even if its just 15 minutes everyday) has helped tremendously! I can SEE MORE now! You've lessons have literally changed my life. Onwards and upwards!

Dear Mr Fujita, this lesson really opened my eyes, I have also watched your other triad lessons but I could only take away one or two positions into my playing. With those new tools you gave me I understand the fretboard way better and I finally got what it´s all about with triads. I really like your way of explaining without confusing terminology. Thanks alot and keep on going with your awesome music :)

I learned guitar by ear when I was younger, and it unfortunately hurt me as a musician. I never had a teacher to show me what I didn't know, so I was satisfied to play any song I heard and create by feel. I eventually realized that I was very limited, because I had no real understanding of how things fit together. Tomo has helped me map out how to rebuild my playing and thus be better at creating music. So grateful to him for being an inspired teacher, and for sharing it on the KZbin. Triads... who knew? (everyone but me, evidently - HA!)

Nice lesson! I have been playing in bands for over 20 years in front of some pretty large crowds. But, not knowing all these triads means I have been trying to communicate with only a limited number of "words" to express myself. Like when learning mathematics, sometimes it is good to go back to basics and fill in the missing concepts.

This is exactly what I am wanting to learn on the guitar. I can play pretty much any chord on the piano, and I understand inversions very well. I know how to make a chord minor vs major. But the guitar, is like the freaking human genome! So, I am focusing on learning the fret board, and then I predict that I will FLY! Triads will be next. Can't wait. I completely agree that chord shapes are not as good as actually knowing the notes! Focusing on chord shapes is what brought me to my knees in the past. I would hit a road block because I couldn't play a certain shape and I didn't know where else on the fretboard that chord might live. Or how to add a 7th, or make it minor. SO EXCITED! I feel like i might finally learn to actually play the guitar!

We are lucky to be living in a time where there are so many resources to learn guitar, but the amount of information can also be overwhelming. This is the perfect example of a bite sized piece that is so important and fundamental, taught by a master player and teacher. I appreciate the patience and pace with which this is taught. I have learned something here. I need to practice it and build upon it, but I now have a foundation. I’ve been playing for a few years and I have a decent intermediate level of understanding regarding theory, but this really made sense and I now completely understand this very small part of playing guitar. Thank you for this Tomo. Your expertise is very much appreciated.

I love watching your videos and always learn a lot While watching this and playing the triads (I already knew how to play them but never understood the notes), I wrote down every position like this: D triad notes: A-D-F# Root position Root - M3rd - 5th D - F# - A do - mi - so 1st inversion M3rd - 5th - Root F# - A - D mi - so - do and did the same for the 2nd inversion and noticed how just moves forward! So easy and simple. I usually don't write down stuff, but this definitely made things click and put 2 and 2 together for me. @@TomoFujitaMusic I am looking forward to such a lesson! I feel exactly the same like Wesley Du. Understanding theory is rather easy for me, not confusing at all. It's maths/logic, But when I learn this lesson, I can play triads in root position, 1st and 2nd inversion. When I play, is this really how to approach it? "Ok now I will play A triad second inversion. Next D triad root position etc." (key of A). What does sound valuable to me (pun intended) is to sing the notes you play. Being able to sing what you hear in your mind (assuming there is something you here) is the ultimate goal to me. But then it does not matter if the fifth is on top or 3rd, I play a *melody* (that happens to have theory behind, but it's not theory -> melody). Does that make sense? That's what is really confusing to me, not how you call theory elements. In any case I am really enjoying your lessons & I have the two Accelerate... DVDs at home. It is amazing how much you give to the community. Thanks!

A few take home points for me were: 1. Root position is root, major 3rd, 5th 2. First inversion is major 3rd, 5th, root 3. Second inversion is 5th, root, major 3rd. I also understood for example, the root position for the Cmaj chord is essentially part of the third fret C barre chord. Or the 1st inversion is part of the F-shaped C chord I play on the 8th fret. Also, I have recently been learning to play Dosed by RHCP and after this lesson I have a whole new appreciation of the Em and Dmaj triads John Frusciante is playing on the record. Thanks so much, Tomo!

Your advice is some of the most helpful I have received for learning guitar or anything else! The way you view systems as a way to simplify but not understand is so true! When learning is just memorizing pictures, facts, or patterns rather than experimenting what sounds good and enjoying it, it doesn't get a person very far. When you really learn the instrument in your hands as far as distance on the fretboard to reach what sounds good, you know how to play so it sounds like music, not just noise. Your wisdom is ever so helpful, and I'm subscribing to your guitar wisdom soon!!
