Residents in Yahidne, near Chernihiv, have told the BBC Russian troops held 130 people in a basement for four weeks.
Sixty-year-old Mykola Klymchuk was one of them. He said he couldn't move for fear of stepping on people. About 40 or 50 children were among those held captive. The youngest was just two months old.
He tied himself to a railing using his scarf to sleep standing up for 25 nights.
When people died, the bodies couldn't immediately be removed.
This meant that people, including children, lived amidst corpses for hours, and sometimes days, until they could be taken outside.

Soldiers are needed, but so are many more roles. Don't assume that just because someone died in civilian clothing that they weren't doing something very important to help their community. There are endless un-uniformed Ukrainians fighting to help defend their country and many of the people who stayed behind in the towns did so to help shore up defenses, keep supplies rolling in, protect the women & children more directly, repair infrastructure and help treat the sick & elderly. Dying with honour doesn't mean that you won't die like an animal, its not how you die that counts but what you did in life that matters.

It won't haunt Russia. They take no responsibility for their barbaric actions. First they say the Ukrainian army were using civillians as humans shields and so they only attack military targets. Then they assert the footage is faked. Then they say Ukraine committed these atrocities, not them. Unless they accept their responsibly, there will be no repentance. Sometimes I wonder if Putin is notching up the outrageousness of his attacks, as a way to goad NATO into joining the war. First he hit residences, then kindergartens full of young children, then Chernobyl, then a maternity wing of a hospital, then a chemicals factory manufacturing ammonia, then a drama theatre where 1,000 civilians were sheltering, then train station full of elderly, women and children evacuating to safety from the bombing.
