EGYPT ATTACKS UPDATE: A specialist committee has released an eight-page document on the recent events in Egypt. It has been suggested based on the coroner’s report, that the bite marks inflicted on the two ladies were most similar to the bite marks seen from Tiger sharks. It is unknown whether this was one Tiger shark or multiple. Tiger sharks (although uncommon) can be found in the red sea. The report suggests that mating season is responsible for the shark coming into the shallows. Although I believe some news outlets are misinterpreting the committee report, with some headlines deciding to run with “sex crazed shark killed tourists in Egypt”... I think the committee is in fact suggesting it is mating and nesting season for turtles (not sharks). The reason I say this is because the report mentions mating AND egg-laying. Tiger sharks are ovoviviparous, which means their offspring hatch inside the mother, and they then give birth to live young - they don’t lay eggs. Turtles of course do lay eggs. The turtle nesting season runs from May - August with a peak in July, for both Hawksbill and Green Turtles. Turtles form a large part of the diet of Tiger sharks and their nesting season could easily have led to a Tiger shark roaming into the shallows looking for prey. Tiger sharks are scavengers and will eat what they can when they are hungry, and this has likely been the cause of Tiger shark attacks on humans in the past. The report suggests these two attacks were opportunistic feeding events. Let me know your thoughts below:

Thanks for the update Kris, had a gut feeling the Mako was being made into a scapegoat. If, as suggested, a Tiger, or Tigers, have slipped into the Red, does it really matter too much, their mating status ? Going to get hungry, whatever "jiggy jiggy" it's getting ! Who's the mayor of Hurghada ?

I'm a diver and have travelled on liveaboards in this region and sadly, I'm surprised these incidents don't occur more regularly. Before I begin, it's VERY IMPORTANT to start with the point that SHARKS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. The problem is how resorts manage tourist access to the ecosystems they're based in. The Red Sea has an abundance of oceanic white tips and other open water predators; they're biologically programmed to be more curious out of necessity given scarcity of food in their environment. They're so abundant that I practically straddled one stepping in to commence a dive - it was as shocked as I was. The feeding zone is usually 0-5 metres below the surface. As a diver, you have to descend as quickly as possible. So you can understand why I was shocked to sail past resorts' 'snorkelling zones' marked by buoys that floated over a steep drop-off into the open ocean. This, combined with the irresponsible waste of animal carcasses from passing ships, means you have the risk of unsuspecting swimmers coming into contact with curious predators. This is a very sad incident and it's about time resorts and tour companies took more responsibility.

Well said, Chris. I’m not a particularly experienced diver (80+ dives) but I’ve done 3x week-long liveaboards, all sailing out of Hurghada, mainly around the north of the Red Sea. Funnily enough, from the 60+ dives I’ve done in the Red Sea, I’ve never seen a single shark, although others have seen brief glimpses of Oceanic White Tips on those trips. I can’t say too much about the resorts. The one I’ve been to had a reef that you could swim around but the water was barely 2m and there was quite a distance before it dropped off. There would be nobody around to help if you got into trouble.

Thanks Rich. Nice to meet a fellow diver. I'm surprised to hear that you've yet to see a shark there. We had our expectations tempered (as all tour companies do), but the moment we anchored there'd be one circling the boat. On one dive, I looked back and was startled when a silky had come out of nowhere to take a look at my fins. And generally we had to wait for our dive guide to let us know when we could head to the surface because they were patrolling overhead. This was in the south though.

Hello fellow divers… after +100 dives, I believe the North of the Red Sea (near Egypt) less fish but more impressive wrecks like the Thistlegorm… equally cool. The south, more fish, more beautiful coral, higher chance of meeting dolphins, turtles and sharks. In the far south, at Fury shaol… we actually met 3 reef sharks in total of which one was 2 meters… but the coral caves were even more impressive.

Hello, ecologist from Egypt here, what you said is true, the hotel is located near a reef with a pretty steep drop off, so you most probably will encounter something. I think that’s why habitat surveys are super important, hotels shouldn’t be built or located near areas with drop offs. I just want to say the Red Sea is a beautiful place worth visiting, it has some of the best coral reef ecosystems. However, people should be made aware of information regarding their safety.

Hey guyz. Let me share some info here. The Romanian woman that died was 40 years old and she was a friend with a known person of mine. She loved swimming in exotic waters as she was recently in Mexico also. Both the Romanian and Austrian women died 600 meters away but the group focused on the older Austrian woman and by the time they counted the heads on the snorkling boat they realised another one is missing. The authorities only found her head and some limbs of the Romanian two days later. There were two problems in my opinion that caused the tragedies. First is that there was a livestock vessel in Sudan than sunk with 15K sheep in the sea hence the reason why the carcasses were floating near the Egyptian shore. The second problem from what I was told is that the lifeguards were warned about shark presence but they laughed saying there are only dolphins here so they ignored the warnings. The tourist phones were confiscated and the rest of the videos deleted. The beaches are now closed there for 3 days for security reasons. May they rest in peace!

The similarities to the Sharm El Sheikh attacks are interesting. Which in my opinion may be the reason for the powers at be to quickly blame the Oceanic White Tip and Mako. I remember in 2010 after the first attacks on Lyndmila Stolyarva and Olga Martsinko they caught an 8 foot White Tip in the area which they implemented in the attacks. The day after the beaches were re-opened Renata Seifert was attacked by what was confirmed to be a Mako. (So unprovoked Mako attacks have happened in that area) It’s interesting because both of those species are pelagic, but the White Tip is one of the more dangerous. They probably have the most victims if you count the attacks on sea disaster victims. I kinda always thought that the illegal hand feeding of the sharks in that area was to blame. The Sharm El Sheikh victims had injuries to their hands and buttocks which of course is where they would be fed from and the fish stored. Also, similar to these recent attacks there were animal carcasses dumped in the area just before the 2010 attacks. So that seems to be a continuous problem there. I think the Tiger is the most likely suspect in these recent attacks after all the evidence has came to light. Seems they were quick to blame the previous species without really investigating properly. Also wanna say that I really enjoy your channel. I really like your approach to everything. It’s open-minded and scientific. I’ve loved sharks since I was very small. Really glad I discovered your channel

@oscarcat1231 tbh I didn't know it was dangerous. As in, I was never told of attacks etc. And the beauty was unreal. But I wasn't aware of chumming going on to attract sharks. I did hear about holiday makers feeding the small fish off the jettys, which they believe has led bigger sharks in. I thought the type of sharks that were found around the coral were not a threat to humans. Only in deep oceans, which we were only on the cusp of. And even then the chances are ridiculously low of getting bitten/eaten. Now I would think twice, especially since more recent attacks. But I take full responsibility for myself, if I go into an ocean, then I have to accept that I could die. More likely by drowning or hypothermia or boat accident than shark. But its still a decision we all have to make.

I think tourists kind of know but still assume the risk. I would do It too, the beauty has to be overwealming. Think of how many thousands of people swim there in a year and how few attacks there are, chances are really low. Not zero but pretty low. We humans assume small risks all the time: driving, taking planes, walking alone at night, even smoking or having an unhealthy diet. These are all things that could have fatal outcomes but usually don't, so we take the risks. I have snorkeled in the Maldives and have seen dozens (hundreds really) of reeve sharks, the beauty of the submarine landscape and fauna was astounding. I'll treasure those memories forever

@davelister29612 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why people persist with this 'it'd have to be huge' nonsense. I get the whole teeth argument, I really do. But it doesnt hold up to scrutiny. Bite forces generated by even small sharks are very large, and a sharp knife can cut through joints just as easily as a serrated one if used with sufficient force. The serrations on the teeth of the great white (a close relative of the mako - it is descended from the extinct Broad-toothed Mako) are for slicing through the blubber of ocean going mammals, not bone, and Makos (not necessarily 'big' ones) have been seen to bite seals in half with no serrated teeth issues. Dentition may have evolved for one main purpose, but they are utilitarian and adaptable. The difference in size between a longfin and shortfin Mako is not really that great, and (if it was a mako) it was more likely to have been a shortfin Mako. The average oceanic whitetip is about 6ft compared to the 8ft of the average Mako, and the Makos reach far larger maximum sizes than do the Whitetips. Attacks on swimmers in UK waters, albeit rare ones, are attributed to Blues and Makos - but from memory I believe Makos are the majority culprits (based on descriptions of the shark).

The quick drop off to the "pelagic" areas of the ocean at these Egyptian reosrts could easily explain the the possibility of the whitetip and lesser so of the mako sharks as being the culprit or culprits. But as you had outlined the tiger may be responsible from the reports given. The Austrian woman loosing quickly 2 of limbs could easily point into the direction of the tiger shark as its bite is cleaner and more scissor like than the bull or great white for instance.

If animal carcasses were being dumped into nearby waters, it may have been a territorial event defending the shark's newfound food source. Although they are fish specialists, they do, on occasion, take mammalian (mostly pinniped) prey. Attacks on people can and do happen. In general, the larger the shark the more likely an attack on a person is a predation attempt. With crashing fish populations it seems likely that fish eating sharks will switch food item preference and become more opportunistic generalist feeders. Also, more ocean dwelling species tend to be more persistent and opportunistic in their predation methods. If you're living in a desert, you take food when you can.

I wonder how many times these women heard this before going in the water for the last time: "You're more apt to get hit by lightning than bit by a shark." I think "bit" more accurately needs to be replaced with: "savaged, eaten alive, sliced the arm or leg right off, ripped to shreds, killed, disembowelled, split in half, decapitated, swallowed whole," and many other descriptions that describe what REALLY happens -- instead of the unknowing, unemotional, fraction of a second it takes to get "hit by lightning."

Correct me if I'm wrong but mako sharks have sharp pointed teeth designed for grabbing fish and swallowing. they do not have teeth that saw through flesh and bone so it was not a mako. That area has oceanic white tips and bulls sharks both have attacked swimmers in the Red Sea. I am very surprised to hear a mako mentioned at all.

I think that the sample size, 2, is way too small to attribute anything in that it was 2 women that were attacked. Deep water very close to shore could well account for a pelagic Mako Shark or Oceanic White Tip (Carcharhinus longimanus) being involved. With Oceanic White Tip's in that Red Sea area have been involved in previous attacks & their demeanour, I would lean towards that species as being the culprit.

Although chances are very small, I still don’t understand why people go swimming or snorkelling further than 5 meters from the hotel reef drop in the RedSea … you are entering the hunting zone of experienced and mostly hungry predators. These sharks see you behaving like a seal on the water surface so for them it’s feeding time! It’s similar like exiting your rental car when driving in a big five safari park in South Africa …. You are the bait in these environments, not the other way around as we are used to at home. My condoleances to the families.
@mich55282 жыл бұрын
I got an update from someone local as to why these bigger sharks were in the Hurghada bay : the day before this tragic accident, there were 14 fisher boats in the bay. These fishermen were cleaning their caught fish on their boat (normal) and throwing the remains in the sea to attract bigger fish. However that is not allowed so close to the coast and said local reported this practice to the marina police, who did nothing apparently… they should at least have alarmed the local hotels and beach guards to not allow tourists swimming… He didn’t know anything about which type of shark, but does that matter?
@royalmorelia2 жыл бұрын
Coroner's report should be able to determine the shark, given the different teeth shape/structure of Oceanic White Tip v Mako. The Mako responsible for at least one of the 2010 attacks (if they caught the correct one!) was shown to be emaciated and was probably ill, so may have attacked out of desperation for food. Based on the damage supposedly inflicted on the victims, I'd say OWT. If someone claims to have seen a mako swimming near the pier, this could be mistaken for an OWT, but unlikely a Tiger. Very sad for the victims and their families, but also for the negativity against sharks.

Hey mate can you address something I noticed with the hurghada shark attack. At the end of the footage on the CCTV camera when the boat is circling overhead where he was last dragged down, you see what looks like a human head pop up about 30m away from the attack site. It could just be the fin I’m not sure but something absolutely resurfaces and was wondering if you had any detail on if it was potentionally the Russia fella or if you think a tiger shark would actually have the strength to drag a person that far that quickly. The shark seemed to struggle to move him throughout the attack and I’ve pushed a shark away myself in person (3-3.5m bull shark so a lot smaller) and I can’t see them having the strength to drag a 80-90kg struggling human 30m in 15-20 seconds. Anyway, just a weird part of the footage that’s triggering my autism. Ps. If you ever come to Australia I will personally take you diving with any type of shark you want, they are everywhere if you know where to look 😜

I am not sure, but I think Tiger Shark mating season is correlated with Turtle nesting behavior. I believe I read that in Hawaii, many Tiger Shark attacks occur near Turtle nesting grounds. It could be that mating season for both Tiger Sharks and sea turtles overlap, with Tiger Sharks ambushing mature turtles coming off the beaches, exhausted from laying their eggs (or at a minimum, the Turtle nesting beaches will habituate some Tigers to use that area as a hunting ground around mating season). If a similar dynamic exists in this part of Egypt, the local government should proactively install shark deterrents around some beach areas. Having a shark mating ground near Turtle nesting beaches could lead to more frequent shark attacks as the popularity of this part of Egypt as a tourist attraction continues to grow. The area would end up becoming similar to Hawaii, which experiences multiple attacks every year.
