I'm 73 and in generally degraded health but years ago I refurbed a Pearson Ariel from bow to stern and I sailed her alot but it was always inland sailing and I didn't make it to the ocean. But I envy those who do and if it's OK with you and the other young folks who choose this lifestyle and live it like ýa do, I'm gonna live vicariously through all of you and pray for you to exercise wisdom and wonderful experiences. God bless you kids.

Here's a cool snorkel trick; As you're rising, blow just a bit of air into the snorkel. Face up, as you hit the surface, quickly move your head down. The snorkel should be without water and ready to use. The air expands as you go up, there by keeping the snorkel water free. It helps keep you from being too tired.

Book... what was it called... Dang it, I can't remember. I think it was "Hard weather sailing" written by a guy that have competed in the Fastnet race several times among other things. Sadly I lent my copy to someone who forgot the address of the book. Very good practical tips on how to handle a boat focused on keeping control. And I can't find it via search engines either. Someone with better luck or that has it? One thing I can think of that might have helped you controlling the boat would have been a very small "sail" up front and low. say a square meter at most and mounted low. That would have taken some force off the rudder without increasing the lean of the boat much. While I doubt it would be possible with the amount of sail you got trapped with if you aren't familiar with it get used to "heave to" in your boat. (Though I suspect you already knows how to do this normally, can't remember if you mentioned it.)

What was your sail plan @ 12:20 during the high winds needing the tiller all the way over and still wanting to round up? Would a reefed main and a partially reefed headsail provide a better balance and less rounding up? Just a novice here, learning the ropes, but this is my understanding for those conditions.
@WindHippieSailing2 жыл бұрын
I was rounding up because I was overpowered, but I couldn't leave the helm to reef the main without going head to wind and potentially ripping the sail. I banked on the fact that the squall would be shortish, and just hung on until it was over
@yojimbos12 жыл бұрын
@@WindHippieSailing So far I find those "hang on moments" too unnerving to enjoy and probably tend to overcompensate by reefing in lighter winds than necessary- often to the displeasure of some of my more intrepid crewmates. But I find in any winds above 12 mph, we still maintain a good rate of speed with the reefed sail plan and the helm easir to control. Did your experience in this squall change your strategies for sail trim looking forward?
