Shark Tank Australia

4 жыл бұрын

Tanya’s business started with a passion for home décor and she first launched by selling her outdoor cushion designs at the local markets. She ended up making 792k in her first year of business and over a million in the second and she’s in the Tank asking for help, guidance and 40k for 20% of her company - giving her business a valuation of $200k. But her timid persona has riled the most outspoken Shark and accusations of being sexist arise...
Company Website: www.sunburstoutdoorliving.com/
An international sensation, Shark Tank AUS features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Tank from our Sharks, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Steve often does things to try to help the person, but on its face looks otherwise. His comment about women not being aggressive enough wasn’t just thrown out there. He knew he wasn’t going to invest, but I believe he wanted her to show how much fight she had in her and how badly she wanted it, because the others had gotten hesitant when she said she’d burnt out. He’s often an angel in disguise.

C P well yeah. Different products in a country that has a tiny population in comparison, business is well developed in the united states compared to Australia, it’s much easier to open products to bigger markets when based in the United States, the Australian shark tank is also newer and not as well known and they also allow smaller businesses on the show compared to the American version. Also let’s be real, the us version is fake sometimes. They’ve been caught out a couple times, us tv tends to be much more heavily dramatised.

As a side note, women need to stop using their children and being moms as some kind of leverage when it comes to explaining why things didn't work out for them. no one made her have a child and if she chose to have a child she needs to live with the consequences of having children. how many times do you here men use being a father as an excuse for not getting things done when they needed to get done?

That is incorrect. Whatever correlation you (think you) are seeing is a mixture of societal pressure and confirmation bias. If you had said women are on average less agressive, that argument would have a leg to stand on but saying that women are inherently less agressive is just plain wrong. Also, he claims that the timidity is related to the gender pay gap. Now, as far as I can understand, the gender pay gap doesn't exist when controlling for industry but if it does, blaming women being too timid for paying them less is some class a bullshit and victim blaming.

@Eidolon1andOnly
@Eidolon1andOnly 3 жыл бұрын
There is not really a pay gap, only a wage gap due to the types of industries women and men are attracted to. Men typically are drawn to job positions which deal with things, are high risk and pay more, they also work more overtime hours, and don't take as much time off. Women are more attracted to service and office positions dealing with people, they don't work as much overtime, and also take more time off. Women and men both ask for raises about the same, but men are more likely to get them and more likely to negotiate for a higher raise. Part of that is due to their inherent overconfidence, and are more prone to take higher risks, they have more leverage to work with given they can show more hours worked, and tend to over value themselves. They'll ask high, and settle for lower but still high. Women are more calculating and less likely to engage in risky behavior, they tend to under value themselves in what they believe is "fair", they're less likely to be confrontational so will already begin by pitching a low number and either settling for their low number or even less. This isn't victim blaming, this is stating simple truths backed by several independent studies. Pointing out sociological differences between the two is not victim blaming. There's no grand conspiracy or systemic prejudice at fault for why women get payed less in general. Sure there might be odd cases of prejudice here or there, but those are rare and barely have any impact on this wage gap.

Steve was right about her tho... Naomi hinted that she wanted to negotiate just because it was the Shark thing to do, I think she would have been able to lower the equity given or even convince her to do the 20% if she emphasized that her valuation was already fair and generous

40avo Yes you could say that but that’s also the point Steve was making. She’s too agreeable and easily walked over. She needs to try be more disagreeable and stand up for what she thinks. It is a fact that agreeable people don’t progress as far or have as many opportunity’s as disagreeable people. It’s also a fact that women tend to be more agreeable than disagreeable. Nothing sexist was said. Edit: This person I was having a conversation has removed their comments therefore I look like a babbling idiot.

Unsustainably high revenues in the first two years and a constant downtrend since, is a terrible sign. Either the sales were heavily reliant on PR, media and hype, or just sheer luck. I typically do not agree with a lot of the sharks' criticisms (for example the episode on Stan Kruss of Expocentric), but in this episode I do think the criticism was well justified. Pillows don't generate any significant repeat business, and the scope for differentiation is bleak. Good on her, for securing the investment, but not a good deal imo.

Steve had some solid points. Even if he phrased them extremely poorly. She let the job become work and overwhelm her and that's why she slowed down. Yeah, she had a child. But that's a life choice, and a personal decision. It has nothing to do with business. It's an excuse that can only carry a person so far before it becomes tired and meaningless. If she starts letting her work slip because of it, it shouldn't be her expectation that people pick up the slack for her. They have their own lives and their own problems. Her expectation should be that, once she starts slipping, she gets sacked. Because that's the cruel reality of enterprise. Your competition isn't going to take a day off just because you do. If anything, they should work harder to steal those extra sales from you. Because they have bills to pay and mouths to feed too. It's not personal, and it's not sexist. It's business.

Blaming women being "too timid" for paying them less is victim blaming. Saying " for a female" or " for a male" about anything non-biological is sexist.
