Heya Shar UK national here, the reason we get the stigma for poor food is due to post world war 2 rationing led to some weird combos/staples in British cuisine that most people don't eat anymore, other than the comfort foods like sausage and mash or beans on toast. The food that comes through however is gorgeous, a full roast dinner might just be the best versatile plate one can make, kind of like a Thanksgiving meal but better (totally not biased). We have a great food culture here but our propensity to not enjoy anything remotely positive and live our lives completely in satire means we dont like to push the idea that we have excellent and culturally diverse food here due to commonwealth ties, In Bristol, i feel like i can fall out of bed and find any food I want from around the world, insane vege/vegan scene as well! Hope you continue loving your journey and are lucky you got to be here for the Platty Joob. Edit: Just got further in and saw you show Fountains Abbey in Harrogate, ITS BEAUTIFUL, I also recommend Harewick house and Blennin Palace, both of which are breathtaking!

@@danielkrcmar5395 Yeah not too bad means quite bad here. Your essentially complaining whilst noting that things could be worse. So for example, you’ve just got out of surgery and feel like shit you would probably say ‘Yeah not too bad’ about how you feel. Since you’re in a hospital so there’s probably people doing a lot worse than you and you’re still alive so all things considered you’re doing okay.

Yeah it’s just because Americans like to complain about us but British people don’t boast so it’s not normally correct. We’re generally a pessimistic county. There’s some dodgy food because of the rationing but that’s mostly faded out. Some of the traditional comfort food from that time is still quite popular since sausage and mash and beans and toast were easy to get. So it’s probably somewhat to do with that.

I think the food was quite bad thirty or forty years back… lots of poverty after the war, and folks got into the habit of eating quite simple stuff. ‘Celebrity Chef’ TV programs became popular from the 80s/90s though, and that’s really educated people to know what good food is. Last 15/20 years people have demanded better and better food in restaurants - so I think these days quality is really high, especially in London. Also London is a massive global city, so we have so many cuisines and choices.

Hey Sharla Brit here, the food thing comes from the WWII. The American forces got the idea that the food was terrible because it kind of was at the time. Food was rationed and in fact rationing in some lasted until 1954. So a generation of people went back to America with that impression. Given that international travel wasn't common until quite recently there wasn't a lot of first hand experience to dispel that myth in later years. Really glad you enjoyed your trip to the UK. You should visit some of the castle ruins if you visit again. Some of the artefacts date back thousands of years BC. And as for British food being bad, just like a lot of our country's traditions that is part of its history but it simply isn't true anymore. Cooking and baking over here is actually very popular and the demand for different cuisines and access to quality food and ingredients really shot up over the last couple of decades. As a result we have a lot of really lovely places to eat that opened to meet the demand. Even American fast food companies have jumped in on the demand for food here recently.

That was lovely - and the weather was so kind to you LOL The British reputation for bad food really developed in the post-War era when the country was undergoing rationing and the food was pretty bad. Dull, beige and tasteless. Obviously, there were traditional 'working class' foods like jellied eels, black pudding, toad-in-the-hole and spotted dick whose names alone sent visitors scurrying for the sick bag, but from the mid 19th century to the late 1920s, Britain's culinary reputation was up there with the French (not least because the English upper and middle classes plundered every alleyway of France for their best chefs and recipes. It'll be interesting to see what you make of an Indian (catch-all term for all south Asia) curry.

Hi Sharla, I'm not English, I'm Welsh, but wanted to say thank you for doing a nice video about the UK. We recently had a couple of British youtube travel vloggers return to the UK and they did some horirble videos about it which I thought was rude and unnecessary and really gives people a bad view of the UK. The UK has a lot of beautiful places and nice people, it's good that you enjoyed your visit here. I wish I could get my boyfriend to travel in the UK more.

If you enjoyed Canterbury, I'd recommend visiting York as that has some beautiful buildings and practically a cafe for everyday of the year ^^

10:45 As a native of Devon, I 100% agree! It is always the clotted cream before the jam!! That is the Devon way and the only correct way lol

Glad you're enjoying it here. Regarding the food, a lot of the reputation goes back to the period of WWII when rationing was in place. There were also many US servicemen who left bearing serious grudges and a determination to talk us down as they had come over expecting the UK to bend to their demands for racial segregation. Brits were generally supportive of the black troops and would often ban the racists from pubs instead to maintain order. In almost any decent sized city you should be able to find a vast variety of cuisine, as we've embraced all sorts. The UK's favourite dish is chicken tikka masala!

I'm from England and I have never had afternoon tea, though I would love to try it one day. Glad you had a good time over here.

I'm British and I've never had an "afternoon tea" 🤣 it's so funny to me.

i am up in Yorkshire and am only about 30 minutes drive from Harrogate in North Yorkshire where Yorkshire tea is made. If you like countryside then Yorkshire is a pleasant place to come.

Funny seeing you go to places I've been - Sketch really is a great experience both for food and for crazy aesthetics (the egg toilets for example) great video, happy to see you enjoying England!

I love all the extra patriotic decor that's up for the Queen's jubilee. Did the celebration affect your travel at all? Loved the video! Looks like a great trip. ☺

When I visited Britain 10 years ago (Damn!) I was also surprised by how good the food was- whether it was steak salad, Costa coffee desserts, Piri-Piri chicken, fish and chips, English breakfast, Cheddar cheese, everything was really delicious. Highly mesmerizing city too, grand and posh. Truly sad to see them split from EU, I was kind of a Brit-nut ever since I was a child.

I've watched you for years making videos a million miles away in Japan so its so weird (in a good way) to see you suddenly in SE Kent where I've lived my whole life. So glad you seemed to enjoy your visit!

I'm so happy that you've really been enjoying your time here!! I can echo the other people who live in the UK by saying it's weird watching you here, but in a good way! I'm not a native (I moved here 15 years ago) and it's fun to see someone enjoying it so much.

I lived in London for several years n whenever my family came to visit from mainland Europe they also said - "I dont understand why the UK has such a bad rep for food! Everything here is delicious!" N my answer to that would always be "as long as you have the money, you will eat n drink like a royal." The UK has amazing places to eat, but things are usually quite expensive (though it instantly gets cheaper when you're not in london anymore xD ) Hope you'll enjoy the rest of your stay!

I hope that when you’re next in London that you can stay at the Renaissance Hotel at St Pancras. It’s a wonderful and historic building. Amazing to think that St Pancras station was once threatened with demolition and now it serves daily trains to and from the European mainland. I’m glad you were able to appreciate the gothic splendour of the hotel lobby. It certainly rivals other London landmarks in both size and scale. Perhaps you’d also consider travelling on the Eurostar from London to Paris? It’s a journey and an experience that I think you’d definitely enjoy. Perhaps you could even persuade Mr Affable aka Chris to join you on your travels?! Keep up the great content and thank you for showing us your experience of staying in England. You were certainly spoilt for choice with the food and tea!

I really enjoy your blogs. Always so upbeat and interesting. Regarding England's food reputation. Many years ago my husband was going to Scotland for a month for work. He was dreading the food so literally packed a suitcase full of cheese crackers so he wouldn't starve. After the month he came home five pounds heavier with a suitcase full of cheese crackers. Loved the people. Loved the food.
