Startle/ Flinch is very important. I agree 100%.

What’s wrong with what he said ... of course we need Mma but that flinch response .. initial move is extra important in a street fight . So what “funny” ?

The ANNOYING thing is though, everytime I see a training video it's nearly always with someone of similar size, height. Try showing someone who is 5'4" (which I am!) what to do, and get him to do what Tony demonstrates against a very solid 6'4" monster. Would be much more interesting and more realistic and convincing if you can show if it can work against someone with that kind of size advantage.

@Glenn Robinson - I know what you mean, but you Just have to remember and to constantly remind yourself that the concepts that Blauer is teaching is the same regardless of height , weight, size or strength. That is most of what makes this system work. This is the same story for wrestling and boxing (and later on in fight science history Judo) and what makes them work. Its not a fancy punch or take down its the footwork and positioning of the body, understanding distance and leverage when engaged. This response Mr. Blauer is showing right here, is something very similar to what we drilled over and over in wrestling. Its not a complicated move or trick or a martial arts lesson, its a concept - dropping your level of gravity, creating and using Leverage. In wrestling we would be attacking similar but the man on the attack would be lowering his head and popping his opponents arm up so he can duck under that arm and bear hug, or wrap him up and step to side for take down, OR take his back. If that happens then Blauer would continue to turn that direction and try to create the space he's showing here. Action and reaction.

being small and light will always be an disadvantage, no matter what self defense or martial art you train. not saying you cant train or beat bigger and heavier guys, ofc you can, but it will be always be a disadvantage.

@@TheKyuss69Not always true. The MAJOR ADVANTAGE a smaller guy has is bigger guys get over confident and bravado against smaller. I KNOW this 100% because my brother is 5'1", was picked on at school from day 1, by the ring leader in his class, and plus that kid was a head taller than him & would always have kids with him for back up, but my bro would not stand for it. He always came out best. Later on in teens he became totally obsessed with m.arts and became extremely good at it, getting in 100s of fights in the streets of Newcastle NSW Australia and always winning. I know it sounds incredible but it's true. He said everytime it was someone bigger than him. "It's not the size of the dog, but the size of the fight within the dog".

@@glennrobinson7193 like i said, ofc you can become a badass fighter when small or light, but coming from someone who is 182cm, 70 kg and my training partner is 205cm, 140 kg i can tell size does matter no matter how you put it.

@@TheKyuss69 The bigger they are the harder they fall. One time when my bro had non hodgin's disease, had no strength, & was on chemo had an altercation with a guy a head taller than him, a very cocky guy, & was in his face standing over him mouthing off threatening him. It was over in one second. All my bro did was an upper cut palm strike to under the chin. He said his dentures went flying out and he took off with his tail between his legs. Point being a taller bigger overconfident guy can be at a DISadvantage because he can underestimate what a little guy can do.

What does outside 90 mean?

It means maintaining your arm outside 90 degrees (a straight line) making it curved versus straight. You have more tension

90 degree angle as your arm is bent at the elbow. Less than 90 degrees is weak. Locked straight is weak. But in between, as in extended and slightly bent, you've got strength and leverage.

People who criticise CrossFit - well the founder of CrossFit is also one of the biggest pioneers of stand up fighting and ground based fighting. I love the spear method and have used it to tap Bjj Blackbelts and manage distance with elite level strikers

Jordan Average I mean no disrespect towards the instructor. I just think think "Self Defence" as a whole is stupid. People learn some stuff in an afternoon or a weekend. Without regular consistent training it is basically useless.

The idea is true, Geoff Thompson calls it the fence and keysi fighting method and/ or self defence Lab both use the same idea.

The non telegraphic punch he said wouldn't work, the opposite is true and that's what makes kuta stand out of the rest of the combat arts.
