To be honest, all large cities have that vibe because cities are compact, it's where also the soulless headquarters of corporations are, where inequality is most extreme. Depending where you are in Toronto, there are leafy, green, affluent areas, hard to call those hell holes. Yet, I don't want to live in Japan, or Singapore,or any "cleaner city". I don't like that conservative, oppressive culture there. It's too stifling for my taste. Vancouver is beautiful in many ways, but the inequality is absurd and unjust. Canadians deserve better. And, no as multicultural as Toronto is, it works well enough for that city. Much less segregated than European cities. So no, Toronto is not a prime example of multiculturalism failing. The only groups I see "sticking to their own" tend to be people there on Visa's or students, I have been ignored many a time trying to speak to foreign students(can only think it's some cultural thing), but are greeted with much friendliness by non white Canadian born youths, We get along.

it always disgusts me when people argue whether immigration should be allowed solely on whether or not they cost money or give money in. i can even pull a conservative-like thing and recall how hitler did similar in regards to the disabled, the nazis would put forward propaganda saying that a disabled person costs the same as an entire family of healthy people for the state, thus the disabled person must be gotten rid of. people are defined by a lot more than just how much money they make or how much money it costs for them to live. it is just a tactic of dehumanization.

Youre right, a drastic increase in workers doesn't do anything to depress wages. It also isn't a great way to have chinese style wage slavery without having to spend the money shipping the product of said slavery back to your doorstep. After all, its not like a diverse lower and working class makes unification along class lines to demand better treatment nearly impossible especially when corporate interests are pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into inflaming those tensions. Furthermore, it doesn't disrupt working class communities at all. Its not like a rapidly changing population and rapidly changing cultural landscape hurts those who can least afford it. As someone who is also "a college man", the fact that you strawman any opposition to mass immigration as "muh dont like brown people" betrays the quality of your education. Saying that there is no such thing as bad immigration is just as stupid as saying theres no such thing as good immigration. You seem the sort to pat yourself on the back for saying scientific truisms like "evolution is real" while ignoring every ugly implication of that being true. For instance, if something is instinct, that means its more helpful than harmful to the populations exhibiting it. Not that the existence of instinct justifies every impulse (they can be harmful in different environments), but it does justify taking the time to understand what is happening rather than this embarrassing take.

My first thought when Black Pidgeon Speaks started listing off numbers in the currency of "dollars" when talking about Canada was...which dollar?? The American dollar? The Canadian dollar? Because you're able to make things look way different depending on which one you're using. At this very moment, one Canadian dollar is worth just 76 cents in America. It's why when you see prices printed on the backs of books, the Canadian price is much higher. These differences change too depending on the time, so there's not much transparency already, and that's before even looking at his "statistics."

Let me put it bluntly, if you have to go on anecdotal evidence don't bother, I think most people will ignore you. That's just how things are. Now I will just address one thing since it's a bit of an issue I have with since it's so full of misinformation coming from everywhere, and of course that is the glorious earnings gap, it's really just my little pet peeve. You make a very funny argument, you are trying to imply that things like pregnancy don't affect hourly pay, this is taken into account during the negotiation stage of a contract. I would like it if you could also link your source in the census for that next time because it's a pain to find anything even if you know what to look for. Anyway into the main point, the earnings gap, in the united states at least, exists, but it is caused by unknown factors as of yet, after we take into account the variables, such as educational background for example. We can see this in The Gender Wage Gap: Extent, Trends, and Explanations (2016) on Figure 2 we are presented with a very nice comparison of unadjusted and adjusted statistics, though the paper leaves out children and marital status so these are still not perfect. If that 9% is all sexism, which I personally doubt, it seems pretty insignificant. So the wage gap is very likely to be mostly a mixture of differences in contract negotiation and sexism, you can mix those two if you feel like it. Now this isn't just addressed at you, it's addressed at anyone that didn't know this on either side of the issue, specifically those denying it exists and those blaming it on institutions. By the way glad you didn't try to deny male suicides, really sick of people doing that. Also " There's a very large intersection between MRAs and MGTOWs, fascists, red-pillers, alt-righters, and so many other groups that claim to be enlightened and speak the truth when they're just peddling outrage and lies. " Guilt by association huh? Just because some of these people happen to also be in another group that does not justify such a broad generalization my man. I'm sure you would complain if I put Shaun in the same category as outrage peddlers, anti-intellectuals and general tumblrites that are in the same group he is in.

I will borrow your method of replying since your reply is quite lengthy. Second paragraph: I was just intending to save you time since you'll be met with "DO YOU HAVE ANY DATA TO BACK THAT UP?" and you'll just have wasted your time. That's from experience. Fourth and fifth paragraph: Just to clear up my point, when negotiating a contract employers take into account the fact women are more likely to take those sick days for pregnancy and other child related stuff, thus tend to offer lower pay since they try to account for it, I see that as simply being pragmatic not an attempt to screw over women. It's like someone who has to take regular sick days for some medical condition like chronic migraines for example, I expect their pay to be slightly lower than a person that is exactly the same as them in every other aspect besides that medical issue. I also expect that if a woman performs better than a man even though she has children she will be paid better than the man. i like to think most MRAs share this belief. Sixth paragraph: Many thanks, far easier to know where you are coming from with a source to check myself. Seventh paragraph: I thought it would be easy to find but that's search engines for you. This seems to be an open download for it: ideas.repec.org/p/ces/ceswps/_5722.html The figure I mentioned is in page 68 of the paper. Now let me rephrase that since I was quite careless, what I meant was that, considering how much the pay gap has shrunk the more we research it, it seems that if there is a sexism based pay gap it will be miniscule and simply down to individual choice, not something we can do much about besides saying that it's shameful. And yes I do understand what sexism is, and I do believe there is a pay gap, just that it's not as big of an issue as people make it out to be. And don't forget the study doesn't account for marital status or children, both of which are clearly really important and would easily take away another 1-2% in my opinion. They do mention their reasons for not including it in the paper if you are interested. Eight paragraph: The problem here is proving that it's sexism and not pragmatism, it's kinda difficult to measure something like that since you have to account for negotiation skills and it's just messy. I am sure it plays some role, but again I think it's very minor in the big picture, even ten thousand sexist employers mean very little in the end hell even 100 thousand are still a very small amount compared to the total number it's very unlikely to have more than a 1% effect at worst, though that's speculating I could be completely wrong. Tenth paragraph: Well glad you were able to get help, not everyone can or wants to. Eleventh paragraph: Well we could speculate about what we think these numbers might be based on our clearly different experiences, but it seems rather pointless. But I do understand what you meant by it, it seemed like you were trying to group them into a big "EVIL PEOPLE" bag which I dislike. Twelfth paragraph: My point was that it would be just as absurd to put him into a big "EVIL PEOPLE" bag as it would be with the previous group. But it's kinda moot now that my first assumption was wrong. Thirteenth paragraph: I could probably point towards other people I would classify under those things like Michael Rowlands for example, though I don't bother keeping up with that stuff since if someone does any of the things I mentioned it will show through what he says and does. You can always find these people in any movement you can think of because it's just part of human nature to be a bit of a shitbag. The comics you presented I don't see as representing the same thing. One is indeed the removal of systemic barriers. The other one is removing half the barrier because it doesn't take into account those that are not well off and are white, leaving yet another group shouldering the weight of those going up. I'd like if we just removed barriers and let things equate as they will without any barriers, trying to change things artificially is like the middle panel in the first comic, addressing the symptoms, not the cause which I believe to be a mistake. See I slightly differ from that statement you made, I think the problem will solve itself if we simply give it some more time and keep things the same way since so far it seems to be working pretty alright, I'm afraid we'll screw it up again by overcompensating in a reactionary manner. That's a good attitude to have!

It's almost poetic. From my own perspective, it's becoming evident who the smarty-pants skeptics are. Most of these big "skeptics" who swoop on any drama in an attempt to stay relevant, yet seem utterly conspicuous by their absence on this topic that is blowing up.

A good example in the US of things varying at different levels would be my rural town. I live relatively close to the mexican border and we have a large number of immigrants in our town. There's a farmer here who hires migrant workers in the fall, and their work gives the town food. But, during the time of year when there's no harvest, the housing on his property that he lets them live in is empty, and so he repurposes it as a homeless shelter. The reason it's there is as a safety net for his workers, but he of his own volition gives the dorms to the homeless. During summer, those homeless people have to find somewhere else to go, and then the individual people in town blame the immigrants for the homelessness, "because theyre taking up the shelter." But on a large scale, they do more good than harm to the town.
