Are there any bigger cams for the 212 that don’t require this

Possibly. The clearance between crankshaft and camshaft should always be checked when going aftermarket. Some cams will require clearancing, some won't. It just depends on each application.

I’m new to engine building, will this throw the crank out of balance?

It will just a little bit. Not enougj to notice at idle or when revving. It won't cause any damage unless you're revving above 9k. Just try to shave both side evenly

These engines are out of balance from the factory they need less weight on the rod end anyway, doing this and adding a larger hole through the rod journal also taking weight off the piston and rod my engine is smooths out at 4000 and stays smooth until 12k

If you have a large grind cam, it will interfere with the stock crankshaft. So you have to shave the crankshaft to make room for a bigger cam
