I would just add that the last part of Ruth's famous speech is that she says "Your people will be my people and your God my God." Ruth married Boaz, a relative of Naomi, whom Ruth met while she was gleaning in his fields after returning to Israel. They had a son named Obed, who had a son named Jesse, who had a son named David who became king of Israel, follows by his son Solomon. It's quite a remarkable and beautiful love story.

I recently found out that my mother’s lineage is Ashkenazi Jewish but they stopped practicing during the Finnish Civil War. I find this holiday particularly meaningful as a convert because of the emphasis on choosing the Torah, and the reading of Ruth who was a convert. And not a bad excuse to buy a cheesecake either 😋

Ruth 1:16 is my favorite verse because I read it to my husband at our wedding! He's very Jewish, I was raised Christian. But on our wedding I told him that I would follow him in every regard, meaning following his lead religiously as well. That's when he teared up ❤

We have always celebrated Shavuot, but not in a so formal way. We collect fruits and vegetables and set them on the dinning table, I make a big cheesecake and we say some prayers pertaining that particular day, specially after been counting the OMER (in which case we use an app cause it's a lot easier). We have read the story of Ruth on this day before, but we don't do it every year, although we should because it's just an excellent story. So this is how we celebrate Shavuot. There's a rabbi who talks about a "wave offering" on Shavuot (Shabbat) and it is the custom of their congregation for each household to bring two *home baked* loaves of bread (not store bought) to synagogue. If a person isn't a baker he said they can buy prepared dough and bake that at home. The bread loaves are donated to the local food bank.

@@MyJewishMommyLife We simply don't know yet. I don't think it's been decided if practicing online is going to count, so to speak. So far I've missed out on Purim at synagogue through Shavuout and nobody is sure if online participation is going to be acceptable for community practice. I've been working on continuing my classes but it's just a big question mark, like so many things. Time will tell and I'm sure that whatever is eventually decided will be for the best.

I'm still studying Torah and going to synagogue services online and working on my Hebrew but Judaism is about community and I'm somewhat cut off from that community right now. So my Rabbi hasn't officially said I'll have to wait longer. Like so many things, she has asked for patience as we work out what will be acceptable as we move forward.

It is also in Christianity called Pentecost and is commemoration of the receiving of the Word. It is the beginning of a 6-month harvest in this country. Odd, how we would feel so removed from the agricultural associations, because food nourishes us as the Torah feeds us and we are God's harvest. One would think that those connections would be so clearly drawn. Thanks.

@@MyJewishMommyLife They are profound because it is 50 days after Easter and is the giving of God's spirit to the world to be with us and guide us daily in our living the Word, the Torah. It is one of the 3 major holidays. There are 3 holidays and 4 festivals annually. The premier 3 holy days are the Epiphany (showing forth of God's word to the gentile world), Easter (Passover), and Pentecost (the Holy Spirit to guide us, teach us, comfort us through the living Word) for the sake of all humanity. It may have been Hugh Schonfield who said that Christianity is either Judaism's largest denomination or its biggest heresy. So much is an interpretation of texts.

@Philippa Pay - “Pentecost” in Christianity isn’t about “the receiving of the Word”. According to Christianity, Pentecost was the period when the disciples of Jesus received the Holy Spirit. I think you’re confusing Judaism and Christianity, friend. 😉

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. In my deeper studies about the moadim, it has become clear that the feasts are all a typology of the ancient Hebrew wedding. If you understand this then the feasts make a lot of sense. The counting of the omer is the preparation of the bride spiritually, like you would prepare your wedding dress. The giving of Torah is the ketubah. There is a good reason why the book of Ruth is read, not just for the harvest but again a typology of the wedding. Many layers to the feasts.

It's easier to go to shul on Shavuot nowadays because most have babysitting during services. Also, some have dedicated Women's Learning so the husbands can be home while the kids are sleeping and the women can teach/attend classes during the night. Also, synagogues in my city have staggered women's class times, so one can go to several classes, each in a different shul.

This is the first year I really got unto celebrating Shavuot. I think now it’s one of my favorite holidays. Being a vegetarian it’s refreshing not to deal with meat on the menu at synagogue. And it was great to take part in Tikkun Leil Shavuot this year. We had it in a workshops session format, where you can pick what presentation you want to attend, was held 7:45pm-12am. Nice to visit, schmooze, eat cheesecake in between sessions. Topics varied Hebrew language, cantorial styles, parshat study, all kinds of topics. . I think it’s not observed like Passover and Hanukkah because the Christian counterpart to Shavuot is not celebrated in the typical Christian church(Pentecost). I like the Kabbalist book I have on counting Omer by going through the sephirot and journaling their qualities for self improvement during the weeks leading up to Shavuot.

I had a thought while relistening to this video today about the milk that is consumed. When Moses came down from the mountain he found them worshiping the golden calf and being wicked in general and he BROKE the higher law that he was going to give them. He ended up getting the lesser law that we know of today. Milk could also symbolize the lesser law, since they were not ready for the higher law, or the meat. On Shavuot we will be staying up all night, the kids as late as they can. We will be praying, reading scripture for ourselves, pausing to hear from G_d, and talking about scripture but not our opinions, opinions from scripture proving scripture as best we can. Yes, coffee, honey, and cheeses but mostly worship to G_d and not the distracting idols of this world. This is to me the best of the best because I love our creator and I love spending time with him. I think we can make the mistake of putting even good things like friends, culture, man made teachings, man made traditions as an idol but G_d wants us to keep it simply and simply draw near to him and not religion or anything but him. Giving your first fruits is literally giving him your focus, your best, your all. It's worth it. The creator of the universe wants us to give him our time. May G_d show you new things this year as you read the story of Ruth and book of Exodus.

I wouldn't say we celebrate it, but we definitely talk about it and read stories and stuff. I have been to Temple, but its not a must do for us. I used to work at a Jewish preschool, so we would make crafts and do a special tot shabbat and stuff like that. I do as much of that with my own children as possible. It really depends on the year. Some years May is just pure insanity with all the end of school year stuff and recitals and tests. LOL. This year is something different though! LOL.

I loved the idea of "preparing to receive" the Torah. Is there any fasting involved in this preparation? The Islamic people are fasting now for Ramadan. It made me think -- if they can pray and fast for a false god, why can't I fast and pray for the only Almighty Elohim? another reason y we eat dairy on shavout is bcuz until we received the Torah the Jewish ppl didn't keep kosher. but now, after learning everything about keeping kosher they needed new pots and utensils cuz nothing was kosher. so they opted for dairy cuz that can b eaten raw until they were able to make new pots to cook meat in.

I think most Jews are less enthusiastic about Shavuot because it doesn’t line up with major Christian holidays in the fall and winter, most people are planning for graduations and summer vacations now, and most North American Jews live in urban areas, removed from our agricultural beginnings. One of the main reasons we read the book of Ruth is because Shavuot is the yahrtzeit or the day King David the grandson of Ruth passed away.

Please tell me why driving a car or turning on electricity is considered work and not allowed on the Sabbath. Driving is fun, and there is no work switching on a light. It is more work lighting a candle!

Lol I get how funny this seems, it stems from the idea that we don't light fires on shabbat so anything with electricity is an extension of that. I do drive on Shabbat though as I am not 'shomer Shabbat' as it's called.

Well as a Gentile person that follows Jewish feasts tradition I celebrate Shavuot.
