This song is a pearl of the French songbook is a Canadian-French cyberpunk-rock opera called Starmania, written in 1976 by Michel Berger (France) and with lyrics by Luc Plamondon (Canada) and immortalized in the voices of Daniel Balavoine, Diane Dufresne and Grégory Lemarchal. The song's theme is depression: In this 2021 version, Dimash faithfully and brilliantly presents a sentimental and melancholy interpretation! As the singing decisions follow the original structure of the song, which serves to show the psychological instability of the distressed character: From chest voice to head voice and then falsetto, the author aimed to show a broad need to win a long of desperation and the need to reach a very high perspective! I'm sure others will explain that this song was written for a Canadian rock opera several decades ago. Dimash discovered it as the result of a French talent show contestant, Gregory Lemarchal, performing it while fighting cystic fibrosis. During his run to the championship of that show Gregory had to act, dance and sing while dealing with only 25 percent of his lung capacity, and then died awaiting a lung transport at the age of 23. Gregory's performance of "SOS," is extremely emotional and Dimash brings out that emotion every time he sings it.

@Hugh Campbell The original singer was Daniel Balavoine, 1978. He very tragically died in a helicopter accident, only 33 years old, in January 1986. The song was written for him, and his falsetto. (He wasn't near the range and technically skills Dimash has, but his emotions cuts in your soul.) The rockopera 'Starmania' was a Canadian -French collaboration, and has been brushed off and played several times. You can find the whole opera on YT, but not with Daniel Balavoine, unfortunately. Thank you, love your reaction! I think in the beginning you think of Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte - The Magic Flute" and the most famous aria "Königin der Nacht - Queen of the night". That's interesting because Dimash is singing songs with parts which are much more similar to "Queen of the night", because he sings much higher than here, but always with such purity and simplicity, he is unmatched! His high register is more beautiful than those of most high Sopranos. And he already sang this aria, just by the way, standing somewhere in a dark staircase and making fun with a friend who pretends to sing, but Dimash is standing behind the camera.... And Dimash sounds amazing of course! ;-) Maybe you know that Dimash was offered to sing at the opera (I think in the capital of Kazakhstan) as an opera singer, but he refused that. But what on earth should he sing there - all parts on his own? Baritone, Tenor, Alto, Soprano - he would be the only singer needed on stage! And less would definitely underchallenge him. ;-) .... Enough for today - hope for more Dimash! Thank you, Dear!

This song is a composition from 2 greats French composers, Luc Plamondon and Michel Berger, composed for the opera Rock Starmania in 1978. It is one of the most difficult French songs to sing. It has been covered by several singers but Dimash is, in my opinion, the only one who really manages to convey all the emotions behind this song with his vocal range and the dynamics he puts into it. You’ve seen nothing yet, prepare and buckle up for a wild ride of the world of Dimash. A prodigy, have at least 6 octaves,extremely smart, speaks multiple languages, sings in at least 13 languages, plays at least 6 instruments , black belt taekwondo, plays tennis, soccer and swimming. Holds a master’s degree and continue to study. Look up Starmania…it is a French-Canadian cyberpunk rock opera written in 1976 with the music score by Michel Berger and the lyrics by Luc Plamondon. In the opera the lead character is Johnny Rocket and he is singing S.O.S. when he has lost the love of his life while fighting extraterrestrials who are trying to take over the earth. It is a song of self-doubt about his life and whether or not he wants to go on living. At this point he wants to be taken up into the heavens. Starmania has been translated into many languages and has been performed in English by Tom Jones and many other famous singers. The song S.O.S. has been popular ever since it was written because I think it speaks to everyone’s self-doubt which we all feel at some time in our lives. Dimash performs this in its original language of French since he speaks nine languages so French is not difficult for him. He makes you feel every single emotion the character is going through in the opera in his performance. Why do I live…why do I die. Even his dropping to his knees in the end was what Johnny Rocket does in the opera while weeping over his lost love. No one on the planet has ever sang this so perfectly as Dimash.

the composer is a french guy, Michel Berger in the early 70ies - first sung by Mathieu Delavoine and then, another tragic story, by Gregory Lemarechal, who died very young. but honestly, I just heard all the three versions again, Dimash is simply the best, his effortlessness the others didnt reach. You were saying about the calm blue...? 🤣😂 This song is definitely a rollercoaster of sound and emotion - navigated precisely by a Master. Not a Dimash original, but he has made his version so thoroughly his own that it has become something of a signature piece. The wings represent the Great Eagle of Kazakhstan, which represents many things culturally, including national pride and independence. Flying into the future under it's own terms. Dimash is certainly carving out his own unique artistic path. His operatic training gives him that reach and power, but as you picked up, he also has training in musical theatre. At heart Dimash is a Storyteller. He describes his voice as just one instrument he brings in service of whichever story the song is conveying.

Dimash is singing SOS by Luc Plamondons a Canadian lyricist which he wrote in collaboration with the French composer Michel Berger. The rock opera is called Starmania, and includes SOS about an “earthling" in distress. Regarding the wings reference: The national animal of Kazakhstan is the golden eagle, a symbol of independence, freedom and flight to the future . He often uses this motif.
