This song came out my senior year of high school. Definitely heard it a million times. Several years before I met her, my late wife, who was a Las Vegas showgirl, danced on tour with him for a few west coast shows. She told me all kinds of wild stories about him. Of course, he was notorious for his almost superhuman drug consumption, although it eventually caught up to him. Sadly, it caught up to my wife in 2010 as well.

Can’t touch this! 🤣😂🤣. The Asian lady with the super long hair was a Soul Train dancer. My man was like, ‘Damn it’s over?’ 🤣. Rick was the original advocate catalyst for black artist to be put on MTV. Originally it was just rock bands, & he had to step to them sayin, ‘Are ya’ll tryin to say people don’t wanna see my videos & Michael Jackson’s videos on your channel?’ He made the. Accountable, & thas what opened it up internationally. Still, VH1 & BET carried a lot of artists like black, jazz, & world music, that didn’t get played on MTV, then eventually they started rap shows like Yo MTV Raps. Rest is history.

At this time (early 80s), Rick James had probably the tightest band in the entire music business. They could seriously crank out the funk. I was working at a record store back then, so I got to hear most of the "hits" of the day over and over again until I was sick of them. But this one, I never got tired of hearing. That's when your band is cooking. Fun note: The Asian woman with super-long hair used to be a regular dancer on Soul Train and American Bandstand in the 70s and early 80s.

The reason he said "Temptations sing!" was that his uncle was a member of the Temptations. They called him "Blue" but his name was Melvin Franklin. I know he asked his uncle to talk to Barry Gordy about going to motown, but I don't think he liked his type of music. I guess someone from Motown saw him and brought him to Mr Gordy and that's how he got signed. He and Teena Marie at the same time. Interesting history, huh?

“Room 714, I’ll be waiting.” Rick James was referencing the drug methaqualone or brand name Quaalude. The drug was manufactured in the United States under the name Quaalude with the number 714 stamped on the tablet. Quaaludes became popular for recreational use in the late 1960s and 1970s in discos - where they were known as “disco biscuits” - and in juice bars. It is a central nervous system depressant that acts as a sedative and hypnotic. Hypnotics are drugs that induce sleep.
