Dean Martin was such a smooth crooner with a nice relaxing voice. He was nicknamed "The King of Cool". This is before auto tuning. Artists had to be really able to sing. And the lyrics were clean, romantic & really meant something. He has a huge library of great songs such as "Ain't That A Kick In The Head?", "Memories Are Made Of This", "That's Amore", "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You", "Sway", "Volare" etc. Dean Martin was also part of the famous Rat Pack in the 60's along with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. & others.

You are correct, Dean was part of the Rat Pack with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis. They made a few movies and records together. Dean was voted coolest entertainer in history. It was Elvis who called Dean the king of cool. He had a hit TV variety show from 1965 tht lasted years. Sinatra once said that Dean is the most naturally funny man God put on this green earth. Martin, a heavy smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in September 1993, and was told that he would require surgery to prolong his life, but he rejected it. He retired from public life in early 1995 and died of acute respiratory failure resulting from emphysema at his Beverly Hills home on Christmas Day, 1995, at age 78, twenty-nine years to the day, and almost to the minute, after his mother died. The lights of the Las Vegas Strip were dimmed in his honor. Martin was interred at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. The crypt features the epitaph "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime", the title of his signature song.

Don't let all the goofin' around fool you. Dean Martin was one helluva singer. He could play the drunken fool, but every performance I ever heard him sing, he was pitch perfect on every note. That's the sign of a true artist who knows his instrument quite well. And that little lilt in his voice was uniquely Dino. Just a magnificent talent. And by the way, some of the heckling you heard was coming from Frank Sinatra, off to the right. This song was Dean Martin's biggest hit, and probably the one he's best known for. But Dagmar S. listed a few others below that would be worth hearing. I would also offer a couple others: "Houston," "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On," and his Christmas classic, "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!"

The story behind this song was that Dean saw one of his sons listening to the Beatles and he told him that he could knock the Beatles from number 1. His son didn't believe him, so Dean proceeded to do so and did. This song became his signature tune...this version is slightly altered from the original version, so you should find a copy of the song as it was recorded. Also the bit about calling the microphone stand was a reference to his former partner, Jerry Lewis.

that was Frank Sinatra talking to him from off stage. This is a piece from a special video of a real charity event for a Catholic organization, but it was obvious that no children were in audience, so they cut loose. Martin, Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, and Johnny Carson was the emcee. It's about 2 hours long and called "Sinatra Spectacular". Two orchestras, lead by Count Basie and Quncy Jones. The whole two hour film of the charity event is like this... And Sammy Davis is amazing, as was Sinatra and Johnny Carson. Martin was a partner with Jerry Lewis. And the two had one worst act break-ups ever in show business. Again, the whole show was called Sinatra Spectacular.

Dean Martin will put a smile on your face every time you hear him. And lucky for us, there's a huge catalogue of great performances. But so much more than his beautiful voice, Dean was an all-around entertainer -- one of only a very few who, going back to the mid-40s, was a huge success in nightclubs, on radio, on television, on records, & in movies. All that, and he had a marvelous, well-honed public persona, highlighting his quick & very funny wit, that made him so much fun to watch. Without a doubt, one of the GOATs in a category all his own. & almost any other category one might measure. Dean Martin is one rabbit hole you just have to explore. Everybody Loves Somebody is a beautiful ballad that became Dean's signature song. That's Amore & Ain't That A Kick In The Head are two of my favorites. So is All I Do Is Dream Of You. Sway is also great, as is An Evening In Roma. So very, very many more!!!. His star began it's great ascent in 1946 when he was part of the incomparable duo of Martin & Lewis with comedian, Jerry Lewis. After they split in 1956, both went on to very successful solo careers. And yes, Dean was a member of the famed Rat Pack with Frank Sinatra & Sammy Davis, Jr. Peter Lawford & Joey Bishop were also part of the pack, but Frank, Dean, & Sammy were the most prominent members.
@doncarlton48582 жыл бұрын
Martin and Lewis were the Robin Williams and Bill Murray of their day. Comedy smash movies that featured Dean's songs. When Dean split from Lewis, he concentrated on his recording career and more serious dramatic roles in movies. He was known as "The King of Cool", but his drunk act was purely for comedy and that glass that was always in his hand was usually apple juice or ginger ale. He was a devoted family man who adored his children. Dean starred in his own TV variety show and every big star in Hollywood wanted to appear with him. He continued hosting TV specials into the early eighties. His oldest son Dino became an Air Force fighter pilot. Tragically Dino was killed when his plane flew into a mountain during a snowstorm. Dean Martin never recovered from the loss and his health deteriorated in the years that followed.

Martin and Lewis. He and Jerry Lewis worked together in the 1950s, Martin being the straight one of the comedy team. Jerry Lewis was famous for the Muscular Dystrophy Labor Day telethons. They broke up and didn't talk for year. Finally, Frank Sinatra pulled Dean on stage with Jerry during one of the telethons.

For years, people thought Dean copied Bing Crosby's style. But Dean said in a published interview that the Mills Brothers were his inspiration for his singing style.

You both have great taste! So glad to see you like Dean Martin. He's been my favorite singer ever since I discovered him in 1965 . . .
