The song title is a play on an Italian Swiss Colony wine commercial in the ‘60s that featured “that little old wine maker, me.” For movie night, you should review “Rio Bravo” (1959). It’s a Western with action, humor, and a little romance. In one scene, Dean sings with Ricky Nelson!!

Imagine growing up with just 4 channels on your t.v , if you gave the antenna a little spin, you might get a 5th channel. My grandparents loved Mr Dean Martin. So naturally we had to listen. Dang , I have not heard this over 40 years. Thanks
@2259r3z3 ай бұрын
Whoa, you had four? Lucky. I grew up in a city of several hundred thousand in the '60s and we had only three VHF stations, each an affiliate of one of the big three networks. However, the local ABC affiliate's signal was weak and required so much fiddling with the rabbit ears and fine tuner to get a halfway decent picture that we hardly ever watched it. So, we had only two and a half watchable stations. We also had a PBS station in town on UHF but that required a separate antenna that we either didn't have or tuning it in was more trouble than it was worth, so for whatever reason we didn't get the PBS station. Many cities our size or even smaller had an independent local station, but we did not. However, in '72 our neighborhood was the first in our metro area to get cable TV. It had no "box" and used an adapter to screw onto the VHF antenna connector on the back of the TV, so it still gave us only as many channels as a TV's VHF channel knob had spaces (13?). That was years before cable-only channels, but cable gave us several independent stations from other cities that showed a lot of old movies, old TV shows, and local content, and the picture was excellent with no rabbit ears required. We thought there was no way life could ever get any better than that, and in retrospect, we may have been right. 😄

Back in the 80s I played drums with an Italian/wedding lounge band that had been around many years before I joined. I was 19 years old and not familiar with most of the music they played which was before my time. We played this song but I didn't know until just now that the actual title was Little Ole Wine Drinker because the name of the band I played in was The Wine Makers and when the singer sang this he would sing Wine Maker instead of Wine Drinker. You learn something new everyday. It only took me 38 years to figure that out! Thanks!

Dean Martin was a versatile singer, he could perform everything from Italian tarantellas to Sinatra-style big band jazzers. This video reminded me of something I had forgotten. As at least one other commenter mentioned, this song was a 1967 parody of the "Italian Swiss Colony" wine company radio and/or TV jingle from years before. The jingle catchphrase in the commercial said (several times) in a funny voice "The little old winemaker, me." It caught on and people began repeating it as a joke, for example when someone knocked on the door at a friend's house and someone inside said "Who is it?". I had forgotten about it until now, but my dad used to say it and laugh. Being very young at the time and not familiar with the commercial, I didn't "get" the joke or the reference, and I wondered what it meant and why it was supposedly funny. It's odd the things that can stick it your head for 60+ years. 😄 I managed to find the jingle on KZbin and I admit the yodeling and accordion music makes it a bit of an earworm. It doesn't say when the jingle was used, but based on my memory of when my dad used to say it, I'm sure that it was 1963 or before. Several years later ('67), Dean made this song but changed the phrase from wine MAKER to wine DRINKER as a bit of self deprecation based on the running joke about his supposed love of drinking.

Amber, that was more than just the pace -- this is just plain country. Crooners can cross boundaries too. 😄 I've heard synthpop from folk singers, and *funk* from Mel Tormé, the Velvet Fog himself. And that rattling thing is called a jawbone, believe it or not. The sound was originally made with animal jawbones, due to the rattling teeth. Today there are pro instruments used, but theyre still sometimes called jawbones (or vibraharp, or vibraslap).

Dean Martin has always been my favorite performer. Sammy Davis, Jr was the most talented human God ever made & Frank Sinatra was the best of the best when it came to singing a great song, but neither was as easily entertaining as Dean, in song, on stage, on TV & even radio in the early days, and in movies, too!! The more you see & hear of him, the more you'll love him!! Also, Dean recorded several songs with a country feel. He may have grown up in Ohio, but he certainly knew how to sing country music!! Send Me The Pillow You Dream On & King Of The Road of 2 of his most popular in the genre. Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme (Ee-dee Gor-may) were two of the best singers from the crooner era, and a long-married couple (over 50 years when Eydie died in 2013; Steve sadly passed just earlier this year). Each had a spectacular solo career -- Portrait Of My Love, More, & In The Still Of The Night are some of Steve's best. For Eydie, I'll Take Romance shows off her remarkable range, My Funny Valentine is just a stunning song, & If He Walked Into My Life displays her power. They were also incredibly successful recording together. 1960's We Got Us was their first Grammy winner, Through The Years is my -personal favorite, & they performed an incredibly marvelous 15-minute-long medley of songs written by George & Ira Gershwin, which is available on youtube & shouldn't be missed!! Together, Steve & Eydie also perfected a multi-award-winning stage show that was voted best in Vegas several years in a row, among many other honors. They were sooo good, in fact, that when Frank Sinatra died, he left his collection of arrangements for his songs to them, citing them as the best ones to carry on the great music. I listed a few of the wonderful songs Steve & Eydie left for us, but there is a huge, highly entertaining catalogue of songs by Steve, by Eydie, & by Steve & Eydie! Discover them. You'll be so glad you did!!!

I know a guy who said his father was doing time in the 70s and one time when he and his mum went to visit they said "not today...he's in isolation", his mum asked why and they said "singing". She replied back "him...singing...in jail, he's never sung a note in his life" and proceeded to dive into a 2 minute spleen emptying rant about time, trains, buses, taxis and money. Apparently the guard said "After meeting you for the first time madam I can understand why he likes to sing these days!" The story was that in the workshop this song came on the radio and when they got to the main bit everyone stood up and sang "a little Ole Wine Drinker me" and they all got isolation for a week. By all accounts when they finally got to visit again his mum was bending his ear over it all and his dad said he was sorry but it was Dean Martin's fault. the instant reply from her was "Well, when you see him next tell him he's going to get a piece of my mind"... Priceless.

'Gentle On My Mind was Dino's biggest hit in the UK, reaching No2 in the charts ....and is a perfect version of a great song.

That picture of Dean Martin pouring booze back into the bottle is from "Rio Bravo", a western he did with John Wayne and Ricky Nelson.

You guys did three great ones today. I’m so glad. Jordan said on the Sparks selection that he got it from an email. Seriously makes me wonder if it was one that I sent because all three of these was on it. I gave you a ton of suggestions. So if by chance it was from that then I really hope you do the other songs also because I would never suggest songs in emails or in comments that I truly don’t think you wouldn’t really like. There’s a real good version of this song by Lefty Frizzell. More crooners I’ve suggested and you really should get to are Al Martino and Roger Whitaker.
