I'd be honored if some mid/late 90s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of "Arms of an Angel" by SARAH MCLACHLAN, "Name" by the GOO GOO DOLLS, and "Long December" by the COUNTING CROWS on my YT channel in tribute to 3 great 90s standards. Believe it or not, I completely, truly, utterly understand. 💪😎✌️ Unfortunately, as we all know, one can never go back. Especially back to when the Internet was new, cell phones were barely much of anything wild, and meeting people in *person* was a requirement if you wanted to be anything other than invisible.

I feel that same 90s aesthetic too! It feels like the 80s videos but with more money and HQ photography, lots of color and also the look of must singer was more ''modern'', casual, cleaner.

Before cell phones really... and the ones we had were little Nokias that we played snake on. People still connected in person. Plus, when you're a teen you assign more meaning to things... but the 90s were def a simpler time... my mum was still alive and I was beautiful back then, too. I miss it too... this song is sorta bittersweet

I was born in 98, yet know what you mean. It's soothing, ethereal, almost "liminal". I love it.. I was too young to know anything but the vestiges of this age, but some things that remind me of this feeling include the anime Serial Experiments Lain (esp the intro song, look it up).

This song is about a woman who "makes a few repairs" to the oven, then uses the gases to burn her house down by lighting a match. She does this in an attempt to escape her past. Colvin was inspired by a painting, which she used on the cover of the album. The artist was a friend of Colvin's, Julie Speed.

As someone with emotionally abusive parents, I can relate to this song. I’ve fantasized escaping and destroying all reminders of their abuse with me watching and letting my past slip away, with this song playing in the background. I’m so glad I found this song.

@blue I can readily relate to what you wrote because I survived years of tormentous child abuse and near murder at the hands of my abusive, alcoholic, and neurotic mother. About a year before she died I told her how lucky she was that she could get away with all that crap. If I had children today and abused them half as badly as she abused me I'd spend the next 20 years in jail. She didn't take those words too well but in her heart she knew it was the truth.

Over 25 years later, and it's still hard to find any song quite like this one -- with its magnetic blend of soft-rock, folk, and alterna-pop. And really, how often does a song about arson strike a chord with the mainstream? Looking back, it still feels like a good choice for the Grammy trophy. (But also, I'm tipping my hat to "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?") That would be awesome to have a comeback of strong female singer-songwriter music like this!

I saw Dido in person at a tiny club in SJ/SF just before she became huge. I was lucky(?) enough to literally run into her just before the performance as I entered the ante-room to the bathrooms, and she was exiting. I was SUCH a derp, LOL. 😂 Instantly stunned by her beauty, and all I could mumble was "OMG! Whoa, I'm so sorry, the door was just... ... ... you're Dido." She said "Yes! Yes I am. And you?" To which I became confused (because I was a bloody derp) and said, "Me? No... no, I'm--uh--not. Not Dido." 😂 Clearly, I was a genius, but after that, it was pretty nice. She asked if I'd come to see her, I said yes, but not to run her over at the bathroom, etc. 🙂 She was everything you might have imagined. Kind, genuine, pleasant, chill but excited to be playing for everyone, and her beauty was ABSOLUTELY unequaled.

There were so many good mainstream female artists and singers popular in the 90s it's not even funny - Shawn, Sarah McLachlan, Tracy Chapman, Melissa Etheridge, Annie Lennox, Lisa Loeb, Jewel, Sophie B. Hawkins, Suzanne Vega, Meredith Brooks, Sheryl Crow, K.D. Lang, Abra Moore, Alanis, Amanda Marshall, Dolores O'Riordan, Tori Amos, Joan Osborne, Tasmin Archer, Natalie Merchant, I'm sure I'm leaving out a ton but it was such an inspiring time to be a female teenager growing up. They sang about a variety of issues and they were confident, strong women, I feel very lucky that I grew up in that time.
@wbiro
@wbiro 8 жыл бұрын
+boudicca storm Loreena McKennitt had a good run in the '90's. Funny how you said "lucky you grew up in that time" (rather than saying something like "It was a good time to be alive")(which is what I'm limited to saying!) - the point is I have a theory - that whatever we heard when we were 14-17 becomes 'ours' for the rest of our lives (my '14-17' was 1969-1973 - and come to think of it the largest proportion of my cover songs are from those years, but I'm trying to do every decade since the beginning of time). I've notice that one generation tends to ignore subsequent generations (my peers hardly know anything past the '70's existed musically) but I rolled-up my sleeves and dug and found some songs from some of the artists on your list worth covering (I haven't heard of all you've listed yet - I've just skimmed the major radio hits so far - but if it's anything like 1969, the best music never reached the mainstream)... I guess the second point is that a good song is a good song, no matter what decade it is from (meaning the song is 'timeless') - one just has to look past the period's studio productions to see it (Example, I played some Nat King Cole on the piano for my daughter (who grew up in the '90's) and she loved it - meaning she heard it without the period drawbacks (passing fads in orchestration and production)...

+Numi How Interesting to see someone write about this notion so thoroughly. You got me thinking about music that I enjoyed from ages 14-17. The years were 2003-2007, and my god, how right you are. Keane's "Hopes and Fears" came out in 2004 and is probably still my favorite album. Bands like Death Cab for Cutie and The Shins, artist Neko Case...their songs are very special to me. I listen to music from across many decades and enjoy many new artists, but you're right. Songs and artists from that particular age are SO SPECIAL to me. Just something to be aware of, I guess.

My aunt lived with us when I was really little. I never knew why. I just knew that she had left her husband, whom I don’t even remember meeting. This was one of those songs she’s always turn up when it came on the radio. Later I’d find out why she left him to move halfway across the country. I’d learn why my parents both woke me up in the middle of the night with no warning, dropped me off at a neighbor’s house, and came back a few days later with my aunt in tow, and I know why she lived this song so much. I think I knew before I ever got the full story.

The chorus of this song is, imo, so incredibly well written, arranged, and performed. The drums perfectly in the pocket. The moving, grooving bass line. That awesome electric guitar arpeggiating in the background. And of course that melody line over it all, with the subtle harmony tucked in there as the understated icing on the cake of it all.

As an old and gray now man of many colors, what I find interesting is that so many would put this beautiful music in a box. As a song from a "time when". This is ageless music sung by an ageles performer. Forty or Eighty years from now this song and especially this singer will have not lost anything in how the intent and the feeling were intended. Shawn is a gift as are those that have surrounded her to bring her to us. Music is why we humans are afforded life. Honor and Remember those that make you realize that. Thank you Shawn.

This song takes me back to sophomore college year. Ditching class weekend ski trips, and camping trips.

Sunny came home to her favorite room Sunny sat down in the kitchen She opened a book and a box of tools Sunny came home with a mission She says days go by I'm hypnotized I'm walking on a wire I close my eyes and fly out of my mind Into the fire Sunny came home with a list of names she didn't believe in transcendence It's time for a few small repairs she said sunny came home with a vengeance She says days go by I don't know why I'm walking on a wire I close my eyes and fly out of my mind Into the fire Get the kids and bring a sweater Dry is good and wind is better Count the years, you always knew it strike a match, go on and do it Oh days go by I'm hypnotized I'm walking on a wire I close my eyes and fly out of my mind Into the fire Oh light the sky and hold on tight The world is burning down She's out there on her own and she's alright Sunny came home Sunny came home

Lyrics are appreciated when posted here because 1. I'm a forgetful idiot and 2. I'm technically unable to toggle between the video and the lyrics pages. Thanks.
