What you’re reaping now, is a reward for all the hard work you left behind building your old homestead. I was sad to see you have to leave your last place, but anyone can plainly see this homestead will be so much better and more productive. You’re garden is spectacular. It seems everything you touch turns to gold, also known as determination and perseverance.

Tomatoes do stop flowering when nighttime temps are warm and daytimes are hot. If I recall, it is 70 degrees F for night temp. If you keep the indeterminate plants alive and healthy, you’ll get a second flush of fruiting when the temps start dropping again. Cherry tomatoes and plum tomatoes do the best because they ripen so much faster than the big fruits. Don’t forget that it is the time to start your seeds for your fall and winter crops. I love watching the harvesting! You’ve done so much in such a short time, especially with how busy you are with construction!! Just an idea…you will very likely need supplemental heat in the winter: When you have your fires going elsewhere, heat up rocks, and put them in front of the air intake for the soil heating system. You could also boil water to slowly raise the tank temperature when there are cloudy days that inhibit solar heating.

With what is happening in the world, one almost has to go back in time to live a life like this where you didn't have to worry about the other shoe dropping. The vegies are so beautiful. Shawn, Anything we get from our allotments is a bonus. This year we have had the wrong weather at crucial times. That and my neglect hasn't helped. Nevertheless, there are plenty of potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cabbage and beets, beans, garlic and Chard. There's also a reasonable amount of fruit, apples, pears and plums. I never got the last five fruit trees planted. They are in their delivery soil in a bucket of water in the back garden. They are looking really healthy in the shade. Two I did plant got scorched out yet four more next to them thrived. Admiring your energy through summer, which pretty much finishes me off. August is always rainy here like right now! But my time is coming September to April! Will be continuing to remodel the allotment to make it more manageable. Have returned to work after the pandemic in a limited way. The foundation for the cabin is looking really well. Regards Stephen.

Hello Shawn, long time viewer, first time commentator. I am a geotechnical professional. Regarding settlement of the soils, you have a few things working for you on the site. 1) You are founding on sand - which as you probably are already aware, means that almost all settlement will occur instantaneously with the load applied (ie the house). This means you could stage your construction if you wished so that you hung the door and framed the windows toward the end of the project. The biggest load will be the roof so once that is on you will have for all purposes reached total settlement. 2) the additional weight associated with the cellar and all associated walls etc. will be largely offset by the weight removed from digging the hole in the first place. This will help to minimise possible differential settlements between the cellar joists and the wider ground floor footprint. All the best. Enjoying watching the building coming along, really inspiring. I hope to go off grid like this one day myself. Edit - the settlement above does not account for the shrinkage of the green-ish wood you have noted previously.

Hopefully you will deviate (briefly) from your impressive resource consciousness & splurge on a large triple pane floor to ceiling plate glass window on the wall with what you believe is the best view. Also, a horizontal line of windows bordering along your sink & counter top - so relaxing to have great views in the kitchen as one works & both of these give the impression of more space & great natural light, The “female trio” in your family won’t be able to stay away! The progress on all you are getting done is exciting & educational to watch. Stay safe.

That’s what I had said months ago Marty. 😃. I had suggested making/ constructing a bow shape similar to a bay window based on part of the “bowing” of the greenhouse. I even sketched it out from one of the greenhouse diagrams to see if it would look right…only I was thinking the entire front of the cabin. It would look great to me, used in the middle of the cabin, then have 2 wings on either side, bedrooms for girls on one side, Master suite with a storage room behind that, it could be converted to a bedroom for grandchildren 😁. Put large windows of Shawn or rather Mrs. Shawn’s…(when will we have a real name for the lady?) choice in the middle section. Kitchen and dining area can be behind Living Room, with pantry/lauder, another storage room to one side of kitchen, then there should be room across the back for a screened in porch. I could see a kitchen herb garden (especially hardier perennials) or some seasonal plants (tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, carrots, etc. or perennial flowers- Shasta Daisies, Coneflowers, Roses, Irises, Day Lilies, etc.), maybe a few dwarf (nana) or mini evergreens to brighten the area in the off season. Gardens that are good for making that late night BLT, or putting a pretty bouquet on the table for someone’s birthday. It would be up to you and Mrs. Shawn to research the perennials that would survive there, since you won’t messenger me to look them up 😜. But, as you said Marty, a row of paned windows with a ledge, in the kitchen to sit herbs, or starts, or African Violets (provided someone puts a thermometer 🌡 in the window and see if the windows have a high enough R Factor so plants don’t freeze.) would look pretty with kitchen lace curtains and the sunshining in would add a cheerfulness to dark interiors. 🤙🏼😬🤩🧡😆🤧😷

That foundation securing makes sense. Hope it works. I know you’re busy enough, but before I moved 1000 miles to stay near my kids and grandkids, I thought it would be cool to build a tower about 40 ft high, attached to the cabin so it wouldn’t topple over, with a platform at the top about ten ft square, with a railing, so I could climb up it and look around, watch the stars, free from bears, etc.. maybe you can think about that, when your cabin is finished. Those longer days up there really speed up your garden! I’d plant a load of root crops in your greenhouse, like beets, carrots etc., and see if you can just leave them in the soil, till u need them. There’s some that don’t get woody. Godspeed with your flooring and walls!

Winter's coming, so much to do! Cabin, kitchen, outhouse, food storage, winter wood. I know you're independent and a perfectionist, but you need some help from friends and family. And yes, use a steel tape for measurements. String and soft tapes give different readings every time due to temperature and warmth. Wonderful, I'm enjoying all the positive comments here, and I agree with all of them, learning as much from your explanations, Shawn, as from some of the commenters. Your dry remark at the start, about checking that the basement of the wooden structure is square and that when it wasn't the cabin would end up in the form of a parallelogram, that made me laugh. Imagine, what novelty it is to actually create a parallelogram home, where you need a whole different set of measurement tools, with non-90 degree angles, etc. That would be a whole new challenge for a builder who is so well seasoned with "square" buildings, that he's welcoming such a challenge. All jokingly said, of course, my imagination is vivid. It's such a joy to see all the steps of building your homestead, with your explanations of the why, what, where, and what for, at times. And the satisfaction of harvesting, filling that basket, how well it's all growing, so lush and scrumptious. It makes me long for the day I'll start with a small vegetable garden near my home, in Britain, hopefully with a lovely and robust little shed, and a similar glasshouse. On the Isle of Wight, preferably, where living conditions aren't so touched by modern lifestyles, with many homes of proper old fashioned build, many thatched roofs, and walls made of the stone found in this island's solid grounds. It's truly the first time for me, to witness such a creation of a homestead, and see it done in this way. I appreciate this very much, and it's also a comfort to witness something being built, in contrast with what's demolished due to a global pandemic. Thank you, Shawn, for being alive right now, creating a safe haven for you and your family, Cali included, wagging tail and all.

Hi there Marian B. I am Miller El Ruiz.. I have to be honest I really am looking for someone to have a long term relationship with but not real interested in marriage if you are picking up what I am putting down. If you are interested in having fun satisfying each other then message me back I saw your profile on here and i think we definitely are on the same page on many levels. Trust, communication, loving, honoring, God-fearing, understanding, patience and respecting your partner. So crucial to provide balance. This is what creates such great chemistry between two people that are committed to one another. Well, I am not antisocial due to the nature of my job. Either I don’t mostly get & have the chance to travel sometimes. Well I’ve had to overcome many things in my life and would not be where I’m at today if I did not speak my mind. So the answer is NO, I have no problem speaking my mind. To be an advocate for myself and my kids. There is a right and wrong way to approach every situation so I am very careful when I do need to stand up for myself keeping others in mind. Best wishes 💚🍀💫 Yours Faithfully Mate xx From Springhill, FL.

To keep flies out of your green house and your cabin, fill and hang large gallon clear baggies or any clear plastic bags sturdy enough to hold water above the doors and in the greenhouse it will keep the flies away! You can purchase automatic, temperature regulated, pneumatic arms that open/close windows for around $30. They work well, that's what I use. Also, I plan on building a walipini or deep winter greenhouse for passive solar winter growing in our northern climate. It can be tough to properly utilize a greenhouse in summer in extreme north zones

@@TheBoydTV Great insights and that sounds like an exciting project! Our US partner Growing Spaces uses that sort of system with pneumatic pressurize-sensitive vents. Overall we found fans to be more reliable and efficient (and sometimes necessary in windy areas), however, if something can be done passively it's something we'll continue to explore and refine.

I have been watching you get your buildings built, but can't quite figure out what the house is going to look like. I think it's going to be bigger, not counting the cellar. I think that's a good idea for a few reasons. After the pandemic and having your whole family living with you, I imagine that small cabin you had was a little too tight of a space. Also, you seem to be saying this is your forever home. You are not moving from here, so I can see that building a bigger cabin so everyone will be comfortable is a good thing. I love that you have added the water tank in the cellar. We are in August now and I really hope you can get the roof on the place before the rain and winter hits. Maybe you can let some of your friends and family come out and have a "house raising". They could help with the heavy logs and roof beams. I really want to see you and Callie inside a properly heated house for winter this year. Last winter you were living in the tool shed, which you are still doing and I don't know how you two did that in all that snow and cold. Love watching the buildings get built. Love that you put a green house in. Thank you for sharing all of this with us.

yeah it is about this time of year things will start ripening. if his luck holds with the weather he will probably be able to harvest thru September. but October can be a funny month the further north you go and nights in September could get a frost in late in the month or early October. i remember at least one year when he had gotten snow in October. now i live in southern New York state and the earliest i remember seeing a first snowfall was mid to late November.

First off, nicely done Shawn James! Living my dream.. Watched all you videos, must be complimented, your endurance and perseverance is admirable. I am a artisan, and noticed your hand skills, and the speed at which you do the small tasks. And from your strength (forearms) I can see that you have been doing this for a while. While you building the new cabin ( which is going to be perfect in every way, judging from your past experience and builds) with all the bells and whistles. where do sleep? Don't know if I missed that part. You are growing trees under which your next generation will sit. Blessings from South Africa.

I know I have suggested it before, but now that you are starting to work on the walls and the roofing I want to recommend making wall-ladders. They are much safer than plain ladders, very mobile and sturdy. The "top"-platform is perfect to have as a shelf when lifting heavy items. I have made both tall and short wall ladders when I renovated an timbered outhouse and also re-shingled the roof. The short ones I use when cleaning windows (outside) and working on the ceiling indoors.

Once you've completed the basics foundation, hopefully all will be smooth sailing then on. Whilst at that, you have very nice impressive 360°views for the building. Hope you'd design your cabin with loads of wide/large windows on all four walls. To incorporate the oblong top windows for the top walls too. It should be very impressive... When looking up you'd see trees and trunks.. or sky or clouds or at the large windows the view down hills. Or the wild animals etc. That would be very nice to spend time drinking tea and enjoying the surroundings on all weather. It's like having your outside inside..in all four seasons. Like a massive giant picturesque frames changing on all four seasons... Beautiful.(been to center Parcs cabin..beautiful...) Then on the outside nice to have a wood shutter.....etc.. Also on the floor above have a nice size windows and a balcony or verandah ...nice to view the stars.. and see the surroundings from a height.👍 That is priceless... Anyway nice harvest you have there... Well done.. take care of your health too 🙏🙏🙏

Hand pollination in the greenhouse will probably be the way to go, and planting anything outside that will attract birds and flowers to attract bees to come visit without having a colony. There may eventually be a native colony on your lands, and that is more likely to happen if it has a stable variety of flowers to visit. You can improve the soil with anything like clovers and other legumes, nitrogen fixers. That was a nice broccoli! Nice garden in general. Love hearing all those bird songs.

I can't believe how quickly the veggies grew for you! It seems nearly like yesterday I was watching the episodes where you were constructing the green house! Have you thought about constructing a solar drying structure for your wood? It can drastically cut drying time, especially on cut wood.

Yeah, I am agreeing in that is something he would benefit from. my "consern" is timber shrink and twisting after building when using Greenwood. I don't know much about Greenwood, here in Norway all of the timber you buy are dry enough for Construction use that they don't shrink. I believe its 10-13% moisture in construction timber. Edit: I really love your channels Shawn:D

Hey Shawn, as a professional builder I'd strongly recommend you use a steel tape when checking over long distances for square. I've made the mistake of using other measuring aids that can stretch and give you false readings. (Laser digital readers are the more modern method) Love you work.
