My late husband and I started watching My Self Reliance from its inception, it was the highlight of our week! He’s gone now but I’ve continued the tradition and it’s still what I look forward to on Fridays. I must remark on comfortable, natural and conversational you have become over these years! I admire and respect your honesty, openness, humbleness, knowledge and skill and generosity at letting us into your life! Thank you Shawn!

“Boring summer” What?? Dude! You built a greenhouse and a basement, started a garden that is producing wonderfully, set up water catchments, and showed us every step of the way! Snort! Boring… Since you are so remote, you might want to talk to your vet about putting together an emergency medical kit for Callie with instructions for dosing for her weight. I can’t say medicine treatments, but I can tell you to keep a can of pumpkin on hand. A couple of spoonfuls with his food helped our dog pass his waste when he got constipated from medicine after an emergency surgery for an infection in his prostrate. It was recommended by the vet. An old time treatment I remember is to let a cut apple turn brown. Scrape off the brown part and use it as an anti diarrheal. Stings and bites can hurt…sending a hug for the good girl!

I second that on the can of pumpkin, we do the same. We also do the emergency medical kit, depending on your situation, a good vet would likely help you put something like that together. We used to raise boer goats (breeding stock level) and in Georgia the worm resiliency to treatment and low selenium levels in the soil, pretty much keep you on your toes when raising them. You have to respond quickly based on subtle indicators in the animals. We were constantly giving shots and other vet treatments ourselves to stay on top of things fast enough. Granted you aren't doing livestock, but I would think due to your remoteness, a vet would be willing to help you build up a kit to treat most things that Callie might face in her roll at the new home front. Have a great day and be safe out there!

Shawn. I have been following both of your channels since you were building the first cabin. I just happened on it one day & have loved watching them. I could have seen myself living such a lifestyle when I was younger. Now I am too old, so I just enjoy watching you, Cali, & your family enjoying your lives away from urban sprawl & the rat race that goes with it. I moved from the Chicago area 41 years ago to the Missouri Ozarks. Taught myself to hunt & fish and have enjoyed every minute. Left a good paying job, but what a tremendous gain! Haven't had the finances... but I've certainly been able to enjoy living life close to nature at a much slower pace. I have never regretted my decision to relocate. I am 71 years old now, and my health is not what it once was... but I get by, and am so grateful for the many blessings God has granted me through the years. Anyhow, I just wanted to thank you for sharing your life with people like myself, who can't do all the things your'e doing, but really enjoy being a part of it through your videos. ABSOLUTELY Love "Cali" (who wouldn't?) And because I live by myself, with a Border Collie, I really enjoy listening to you share your thoughts & ideas on this channel. I hope you can get your new cabin up in time for the winter weather you have up in Canada. I will be watching along as you work to get it done. Thank you so very much for making this Grandma's life happy by sharing yours with me and so many others like me.

I watch both channels, it may sound strange but I love the sound of hammer on nail and the sound of the mill, it takes me back to the 1960's and 70's when my grandparents made decorative bellows on their old kitchen table. My grandfather would cut the wood in his garage. I love nature too and always look for wild animals on the drone footage. Its great that you are building a bigger cabin with a large cellar, hopefully with lots of shelves to store bottled food. Horseflies are vile - they bite and like all biting and stinging insects their venom has been more potent this year.

My father installed a metal grate in the floor just inside the back door of the old farm house. It was perfect for catching dirt, mud, and snow, which fell to the cellar below, on a metal pan. My mother appreciated that we didn't carry extra dirt into the house.

There's a few groundcover plants you could use around the cabin that I'm sure you're aware of as well as thyme ,such as wood sorrel ,bearberry or wild strawberry . If you're thinking of creating an edible forest it'd be nice be nice to have a few plants to graze on while enjoying the view.

You can always dig more french drains around the cabin with drain pipe to route excessive snow melt and heavy rainfall away from the cabin. If the water is moving laterally enough that your current mitigation steps and French drains around the cabin area that enough to deal with it, then you will likely know it pretty quickly. Anyways, the work looks good and I appreciate you bringing us along for the ride, Shawn. God bless and keep you, your wife and daughters.

Shawn, you have been a huge inspiration for my wife and I as we formalize our plans for self sufficiency. I DO watch both channels! Thank you for your hard work and openness in sharing your experience with us all!

First, thanks for sharing so much with us. One could say that you provide a primer on proper wilderness (off-grid) living. And it is the best in my opinion, having lived the life 45 years ago in Alaska. The main point I wanted to convey is that it is good planning to get all this work done now. 15 or 20 years from now, it will be more difficult (if not impossible) to do the amount of work you are doing today. I'm 68 now and everything takes just a little more time and effort. As you age, you will also find some things become more and more difficult to do. And parts of your body will eventually start failing (bad hips, aching joints, arthritis, etc.). It WILL eventually restrict your scope of work. At 50, you still take care of your work and chores quite handily. It will be different in a few years. The point is, plan on completing your home and other planned projects now, so you live into old age with minimal effort. That said, enjoy your wonderful life--you certainly have earned it! Cheers.

If you have Benadryl on hand you can call your Vet and get a dose recommendation for Cali. Only if that swelling gets really itchy. Worst if swelling involves the tongue! Ps I watch both channels. This one to hear your calm explanations. The other to just watch you work and see Cali running around. Often motivates me to go out and mow my lawn or something. 👍🏻👍🏻.

Every time I watch your videos I say I can't believe how hard you work. If there was an award for someone who works the hardest...you would be the winner. I don't know how you do it. All your hard work will be worth it in the end.

I just watch whatever YT sends me. Sometimes you talk, sometimes you don't. Either I'm learning something or I'm tripping on the beautiful scenery. Cali is an added bonus, You're a neat man.

I was a firefighter for 23 years. Regarding your concern of spontaneous combustion from wood chips, that is a real concern if the chips are piled up. If they are spread relatively thinly on the ground it shouldn’t be an issue.

I totally feel you with this humidity. My husband and i put a water reservoir into the ground and the sewer pipes for the spillover and now we're filling up all those holes on our property and it is soooooo hot and humid at the moment. Fingers crossed, weather is getting more pleasant at your homestead and that you will be able to make good progress until the winter comes ;)
